Maybe Sarah Palin should be pleased with Newsweek’s cover shot. After all, it could give her ammo for a sequel, perhaps entitled “Going Rogue II: Sarah Palin Unloaded.”
The former Alaska governor isn’t happy with Newsweek for featuring her on the cover of its magazine. Whether she’s upset with the article or not isn’t known. But the photo they chose? That’s another story.
Run to the hills
Newsweek decided to use a photograph originally used for a Runners World article published last August. No, it’s not like she’s all sweaty, haggard, and ready to collapse at the end of a marathon or anything — in fact, it’s just the opposite.
It’s more like a glamour shot. Sure, she’s in running gear but it’s apparent that she hasn’t begun the workout yet. She’s posing in her old office clutching two Blackberries and leaning on an American flag. This was an OK photo for Runners World, she says, but not for a serious news story. It’s sexist and out of context.
“The choice of photo for the cover of this week’s Newsweek is unfortunate,” Palin wrote on her Facebook page. “When it comes to Sarah Palin, this ‘news’ magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant. The Runner’s World magazine one-page profile for which this photo was taken was all about health and fitness — a subject to which I am devoted and which is critically important to this nation.”
“The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now. If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention - even if out of context,” she adds.

I don't know about sexist but it was absolutely inappropriate to take the picture that was shot for runner's world and put it on newsweek. The shot was totally appropriate for runner's world but seems to belittle or marginalize Palin in a non-professional way.

Well I think when 240, Beach, Hugo, kazan, mal, Billy and myself were having that conversation we must have used big words (over 5 characters) and you didn't understand it.
So why do I need to repeat myself and post again and again every single time someone like the Dean of Harvard Medical School says something that I already stated and is in agreement with my opinion?
As far as whether Newsweek was authorized for that photo use, I don't know. I haven't read much of any news related to it and haven't seen if Runners or the photographer has complained about property rights. As a photographer on the side myself, I can tell you the world of photographic property isn't as cut and dried as it appears.

Timewise overall, I tend to do more "filthy lib" type events like charity fundraisers for HIV, cancer, and MS. I will shoot the White Party fundraiser this weekend. And "filthy lib" type performers like the Dixie Chics at the Bank Atlantic Center. These are usually just 1 night functions.
I also contract out with a travel agency here when the owner hosts his own travel packages and does cruises, land trips, etc.. These are usually 1-2 weeks at a time. I used to do at these all the time - 8 or 9 trips a year, but now have to pick and choose because I only get 6 weeks vacation per year from the hospital.
When I first came to South FL, the real estate market was booming and I took some photos of a property for a friend who was an agent. All the other agents in the company loved them wanted me to do theirs as well. Then another agent at a different wanted them, and another, etc.. I was charging $45 per property (8-10 pics) and would get the locations and access keys on Saturdays and Sundays and hit about 15-25 properties each day. I was making a killing back then before the market bubble burst. While real estate isn't a "filthy lib" thing, I made it a "filthy lib" thing by taking cash payments and not paying a damn dime in taxes. I should have went an extra step and hid all the money in my freezer too.
