It's a cold, rainy morning here outside of Sacramento and as I went out to put the trash bins on the street, I briefly noticed a man out for a walk. No biggie, people walk all the time, even in the rain. While removing my bin, I made sure that Jake, my 7-lb furball of terror didn't get out, because he'd surely go running after the guy who was approaching.
Seconds later, I was startled by the distinct sounds of dog attack, but when I came around the corner expecting to see dog-on-dog, I saw a person lying on the ground being attacked while the man I'd seen moments earlier was attempting to pull his dog (which I had not noticed before) off the victim. Another dog - presumably the victim's - was snapping at the aggressor and a *third* large dog was observing all the action.
My first reaction, of course, was to protect my family by ensuring that the front door was fully closed and then I made sure Jake was inside the gate. I then quickly unlocked my truck to ensure that I had an escape, if necessary, and then I yelled "Hey!" and semi-offered myself as a decoy for the two non-attacking dogs in hopes that they would come in my direction, leaving the two people to deal with just the one dog.
The owner of the attacking dog was finally able to pull his dog away from the downed man, but not before the victim had suffered a few bites on his forearm, which protected his head. From that distance on a pretty dark street, it didn't look that bad, but he was visibly and understandably shaken.
It turns out that both of the other dogs belonged to the victim and only one of them had been interested in fighting the attacking dog in the first place.

The lesson here is two-fold:
1) Vicious dog breeds don't belong in family neighborhoods - take the white trash bullshit back to the trailer park where it belongs
2) Now I've got to yell at my baby mama for carelessly throwing all her shit in the garage while 'cleaning' and covering up my baseball bat - not having ready access to my bat could've cost a man his life today.
...
Oh, and being a GetBigger, I snapped a picture with my cell phone camera while unlocking the truck. Unfortunately, it was just a dark, muddled mess. Boo on that, but at least I was thinking of you guys! ;D

Next time, pull your glock from concealed-carry and fire a single round safely into the dirt nearby. The noise will stop all violence immediately and allow the dogs to take inventory of their damage.

and then get charged for discharging a weapon in public. If you are going to fire, then shoot the dog.

Yeah, for some unknown reason, our community has been annexed by the city, so I would be charged and have to pay some bullshit fine.
But, at least there would be one less vicious dog on the streets.

Mmm...the older gentleman with the attacking dog didn't appear to be an asshole, but maybe he was. Yet, his dog just snapped and attacked a fellow homeowner who was merely putting something in his trash can.
All 3 dogs were on leashes, and yet, the owners weren't able to control them. Yeah, those dogs weren't aggressive at all.

Never play with a gun.
Don't carry a weapon without having the commitment to its use. Guns are weapons, not penis extensions, FFS!

If you fire your weapon as a means of protecting human life - halting a forcible felony - you're gonna be alright. perfectly legal, and the reason concealed permits were enacted in the first place - to halt violent crimes against people, which this certianly is.
If you call 911 and say "I saw this person being mauled and what I believe to be close to death, and I fired my weapon safely into the dirt to stop this attack", you'll be fine. Maybe a fine - but more likely a pat on the back for keeping this poor bloke alive.
Firing your weapon into a dog on a person is FAR more dangerous, when a loud Crack will most likely send the dog packing. Trying to kill an animal and risking ricochets or the bullet passing thru animal into person, then dealing with liability of idiot crying "you killed my dog" is messy. a small hole in a front yard is not.
it's not a manly thing by any means - it's a means of saving the life of a human.

If you're not skilled enough to make the shot..... leave your gun at home. You and everyone around will be safer.
I have a concealed carry permit and know what they are for.
-
In before someone says dogs are terminators that can't be harmed with a puny baseball bat.
You acted well. You had a clear thought process.
-
Now I've got to yell at my baby mama for carelessly throwing all her shit in the garage while 'cleaning' and covering up my baseball bat - not having ready access to my bat could've cost a man his life today.
Tre, keep the bat in the truck, or keep some smaller weapon like a stun gun there.
-
"If you're not skilled enough to make the shot..... leave your gun at home. You and everyone around will be safer.

You would fire your weapon into a dog on top of a human being?
you're a braver man than I. Dogs are small and that bullet is probably gonna come out the other end, even a hollow point. It might land in the person you're trying to protect.
That's just me. I would fire into the dirt and call 911. if you want to risk a shot into a flailing dog on a bleeding person, go for it.

I'm a good shot and would never, ever... ever draw a weapon unless it was to kill someone.
Personally, I wouldn't have shot the dog unless my kids were in danger.
-
"I'm a good show and would never, ever... ever draw a weapon unless it was to kill someone. Personally, I wouldn't have shot the dog unless my kids were in danger."
IMO, the gun can be a useful tool, without shooting something. There is more risk involved with trying to dispatch the dog, since the person youre trying to save is attached to him.

No shit, that's why we were shocked when they went after people, two different times, several years apart.
The lab "snapped" and chased a friend of my dads into the kitchen and he jumped on the stove before we could stop the dog, the golden tried to take off some guys face outside, both males, the golden intact the lab fixed.

what kind of dog was it a kurdish kangal?
-
If the victim would have been walking his pitbull, this would have been an entirely different story. The strange dog would have tried to attack, the victim's pitbull would have torn it a new asshole, and then the media would have had a field day reporting about the vicious pitbull that attacked a man's wonderful, peaceful pet as he was walking along minding his own business.
-
Why are all black people terrified of animals? It must be some genetic thing, to help them survive in the African bush. Hell if I had a nickel for every guy I saw freak out and shit their pants over seeing a cute little puppy!

Yes! and did you notice how he "witnessed" and not "help"
It's not their nature to do either.

one day robert ziruolo will end in jail due to his mental shortcomings.

I cant stand dogs for the most part.
If a person lives in a rural environment I think dogs are cool.
Otherwise they are loud IMO. Who wants to hear a dog bark every time a person walks by on the street, or when the dog sees a cat or another dog, or the mail man shows up, or a car pulls in the drive way

That's always a concern. Everyone knows pitbulls often get "whooped" in a dogfight.

No wonder. I'd be pissed, too, if someone came across me. ;D

Twice another dog has tried to attack mine at the beach and both times I moved forward and shouted a loud HEY! with the intention of attacking the other dog. Twice before I've been charged by an aggressive dog and had good luck with a bold attitude. Every time the dog has stopped immediately. Maybe I've just been lucky but imo never run or back away from a dog that is going for you. Loud and aggressive has always worked for me... so far.
I would have tried a kick and a shout but maybe I would have just been the next chew toy. How big was this dog tho? I mean, who can't drag their dog on a leash 3 feet? Was this a little old lady with a great dane or something?

240, do you conceal carry? If so, what gun and caliber?
I live in the nazi regime of Illinois with the strictest gun laws of any state. When I'm done with all my schooling I want to get the F out of here ... I would love to carry.
I was in Fort Myers early June this year and loved it. My pussy ass buddy isn't too fond of guns though.

Wisconsin and Illinois, the only 2 states left that don't allow concealed carry. You gotta love it.

If you get caught without a carrying permit, it's a mandatory 1 year sentence.
Even with a permit, they still have some weird rules about carrying it in your vehicle, right?

yep. i'm a glock 40 man :)
And I'm very responsible with the gun. You only use it when you need to save a life or prevent a violent crime. Been carrying over 12 years now.
In this case though, if a dog wass biting a person and blood spurting and vocal commands were not stopping the atack, I would fire into the dirt away form everyone to try to scare the animal.

This actually happened to me back when I was in high school. A neighbor was being attacked by two dogs. I ran out side with shotgun thinking i'd shoot the dogs. That would have turned into a homocide, so I fired in the air. The dogs stopped immediately and looked at me. This was a single shot gun and I had no other shells, so I had an "ah shit" moment. I started yelling and the dogs ran off. Don't know if this will always happen but it did that time.

no permit no problem i carry a chainsaw wherever i go.

As much as I hate to admit it, I learned today that both dogs involved in the fracas were labs.
And of course, the black one started it.

You can buy handguns, you just can't get a permit to carry one concealed. There isn't another kind of permit. If you want to take it somewhere to shoot it, it has to be unloaded and in a case and away from the shells. For instance, you can have the gun in the trunk and the rounds in the car.
