Or has the fad worn out?
It seems to be at its most popular in the UK and Ireland. I have used them before and they are shit. Good for cardio but nothing else.
Thoughts?
-
My thought, you're right - they're useless
-
A handheld gym.
-
They can build some shoulder size and do a little for your legs.
Not 1/100th as versatile or effective as a dumbell and barbell.
-
Falcon would love them
-
i would just do spinning tornado workouts with them things

I don't think I've ever done anything to fry my thighs like swinging those things around. I don't know what the fuck sort of mechanics are involved but they kill me.

Yes, we even have 3+ big Kettleball societies/federations. When they first came here about 10-12 years back, they were just a quirky thing being promoted as a lost Eastern Bloc secret(a joke among a few American coaches was that the Russians were too poor to have proper sized dumbbells, so they made due with the old things).
Now with Crossfit, etc.... they've gotten far more popular, to the point that you can buy the smaller(less than 20kgs) sizes at almost any sporting goods store.
It is somewhat fun to play with the larger sizes, due to the oddness of feel, but the same could also be said for thick grip barbells, odd loaded dumbbells, etc...

where can I get some iron Boots ? The ones the bar going through them, I want to wear them to work.
-
Yeah.. Fad/hyped up pieceof garbage
-
Well yeah, if you just want to get your biceps and chest pumped up then yeah I agree, but if you want to attain some kind of strength and fitness then I would say kettlebells are awesome.

The "fitness" industry uses kettlebells as a gimmick like it's some new concept to workout with and a gimmick to sell another bullshit certification. Kettlebells work, but are overrated. We use them but not for much. (turkish get ups, core, swings, posterior chain work)
The "fitness" industry has pretty sissified everything forgetting or not knowing it takes hard work and not gimmicks to get in shape.

Wilbur Miller does not approve of Iron Boots, he thinks you should just do your leg presses like a man:

But if you really want the iron boots, there are piles of them on Ebay or Ivanko still makes them. http://www.wwfitness.com/ivanko-4.html .

Kettlebells are great for cutting fat.
-
I have used them.
Kettlebells are just a cardio tool and an ab workout.
To much reliance and BS about using them to build size and strength etc
-
They're still too hardcore for Planet Fitness to have them.

Clearly offseason for Planet Fitness, you got to have a basement or garage for kettlebells

Even better...an unfinished basement with a handpainted sign on the doorless doorway that says, "WELCOME TO THE DUNGEON!!!"
-
We used them a lot in boot camp.

Damn BroadStreet you avatar is distracting me

There more of a conversation piece in my gym.
Every now and then I will walk up to one and rub it gently and act all wow like.
That's always good for a few sets of jaw flapping.

just another example of history repeating itself, what's old will become new again. kettlebells were around forever now some idiot rediscovered them . just like pilates being the latest thing a few years ago, look up the origin it's some joker with the last name pilates who came up with this lame way of exercising. funkersize your body will be next. that being said i like useing kettlebells to train triceps as depicted in the pic below.....

I still feel they are best for improving functional strength.

Try a heavier kettlebell, leave the 12kg for the girls. ;)
-
kettle bells predate the dumbell....
the kettle bells increase the chances of wrist injuries....and once you screw up your wrist...well, you carry the injury for life....
in summary, stay away from the bells...
-

No such thing as functional strength as a general defination.
What is functional for one sport is not necessarily functional for another

Well isn't that simple. Now prove that and make millions.

Bodybuilding isn't a sport.
By functional strength I specifically mean the ability to do work in real life... not just the gym.
They're also a very effective method of fat loss (with muscle sparing) for those who hate cardio.
If there's one legitimate criticism of kettlebells it would be their simplicity. There are really only a few basic, great exercises and people who get bored have to increase the weight/intensity or start doing more creative exercises and end up injured.
Kettlebells will never provide the variety some people need. That being said I'd still argue most guys/girls that hit the gym with any regularity either ignore or do the three foundational exercises wrong anyways. :)

Agree wholeheartedly. Soo many people talk about this new fad of kettlebells, not realising that this is "old school." Great for the time compressed, good for coordination, not the ideal if your goal is size.
