Outstanding shots ND!!!! :o :o :o...i recall watching that show in 1989 on VHS... the way the use to introduce the BBers back then was great with the music, lighting etc...very dramatic, what i recall was Haney looked outstanding and IMO was the clear winner, Berry Demeys and Mike Quinns routines were Fantastic and IMO Phil Hills Dramatic posing routine to The Phantom of the Opera is STILL the bench mark for the Olympia, This shot of MQ you posted is one of the best FDB of the time...a little more quad and calf mass would of pushed him into the top 3 that year...and heres a few more from 1988

Mike Quinn had small arms almost T-Rex like in some shots, and weird torso/waist. Phil hill was a beast. They need to bring back those trunks, you can see if someone is in shape without seeing their glutes.

awsome, everyone in the top 6 looked spectacular.  I always thought that was the best gaspari has ever looked....demay was in the best shape he was ever in as well, when people talk about the most ripped guys ever he never gets mentioned but his condition at this show should get him inot the conversation.  Labrada was...well, labrada.  Pretty much perfect right there.  Strydom lost the chicago pro show a few weeks earlier so he dropped a ton of weight to get into that kind of condition and it cost him size in his back but lord is he shredded there and from the front he is just awsome.

there was a euro tour after this and labrada and gaspari went at it the whole time, I think they both won 3 shows and gaspari held his olympia condition but labrada actually got better and better as the tour went on.

awsome olympia.

GREAT LINEUP..all in good to great shape, the thing that stands out is all have unique shape, look, today everyone looks big for there size.labrada weighed around 178/185 then and at 5'5 or so pulled it off, today kevin english is 270 offseason at same height and does 202.comparing demey to strydom they weighed almost the same but demey was ultra ripped ,but then strydom blew up to 260 plus and was much bigger than demey wbf days...strydom over did his diet and still looked good in side chest, legs shots.

If Ron Love hit the GH he couldve potentially beaten Haney. Ron Love has a structure that is superior to most of the guys up there.

Phil Hill was impressive.

Strydom overdieted. He Dominated 3 years later though

Sad to see how savagely bodybuilding has regressed in 20 years... 88 everyone looks amazing and in shape...today almost everyone looks bloated, oily, and terrible.

We need to go back to the suicidal standards of the early 90s.  :-\

I thought it was revealed that Albert Beckles was in fact born in 1930? I have a muscle and fitness magazine from 1982 and it states that he's 52 years old. I have a flex magazine from 1988 where they are doing the coverage from the 1987 Mr. Olympia, stating that 27 year old Lee Haney was standing next to 57 year old Albert Beckles. I also have a Flex Magazine from 1997, where they state he is 67 years old.

I believe he was born in 1930. He never looked to be 8 years younger than that (in the face).

This question comes up every now and then but the explanation given was that his birth certificate said 1938 but that the 8 was half erased and looked like a 0.  Also, apparently Albert himself was unsure of his actual birth date.

ever notice that guys in the past get a free pass on issues pros do not get away with today? i mean gaspari looks horrendous in the MM in some pics there, totally out of balance. Some of the guys are lacking legs and arms.

I mean todays pros rape those guys and yet no one says anything, its like we expect to much causing us to be unimpressed with anything other then amazing.

I agree, everyone rips on guys now, saying guys back then looked better. But common, hardly any of the guys had legs, back standards were way lower, and half the 80s guys had so-so arms. Gaspari had great condition but next to Kai or Dexter he would be invisible onstage.

Strydom had absolutely no back.

Beckles was awesome but very small.

Etc.

I'm not ripping on those guys cos they looked great, but I give today's guys equal respect.

Labrada is someone who makes contact with the audience, has a good overall muscle control, makes his poses slow on a confident and non arrogant way. How many today 'pro s' have all of these qualities inside?

Okay, I understand being off by 1 or 2 years (same dispute with Joe Weider being born in 1919 or 1920), but not knowing if you were born at the beginning of the decade or at the end of it is ridiculous. I was born in 1977. For me to be a grown adult and say, well, I'm not sure if I was born in 1969 or 1977 is absurd.

Labrada is someone who makes contact with the audience, has a good overall muscle control, makes his poses slow on a confident and non arrogant way. How many today 'pro s' have all of these qualities inside?

Kai Greene? ;D

Minus the lack of ab controll he's fun to watch and he can afford the arrogance ;) (no homo)
