Switzerland votes to ban minarets

GENEVA (AFP) – Switzerland on Sunday voted to impose a blanket ban on the building of minarets across the country, backing an initiative by far-right politicians.

A clear majority of 57.5 percent of the population and 22 out of 26 cantons voted to ban the towers or turrets attached on mosques from where Muslims are called to prayer.

Ha ha.  Funny.  But you know what?  The left in this country really needs to examine who its real enemies are.

Radical Islam is the mortal enemy of gays, open society, freedom, and free expression.

However, it seems as though they think Glen Beck is a more dangerous enemy than someone who would slit their throats at the mere sign of a rainbow bumper sticker on the back of their Prius.

Can't say that I blame them.

For some reason they do tend to build these tings so that they are higher than the surrounding buildings and they beome a dominant architectural feature.

Switerland is a beautiful place, with it's own architectural style & culture - why not preserve that ?

GENEVA - Swiss voters yesterday overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on minarets, barring construction of the iconic mosque towers in a surprise vote that put Switzerland at the forefront of a European backlash against a growing Muslim population.

Muslim groups in Switzerland and abroad condemned the vote as biased and anti-Islamic. Business groups said the decision hurt Switzerland's international standing and could damage relations with Muslim nations and wealthy investors who bank, travel and shop there.

"The Swiss have failed to give a clear signal for diversity, freedom of religion and human rights," said Omar Al-Rawi, of the Islamic Denomination in Austria, which said its reaction was "grief and deep disappointment."

About 300 people turned out for a spontaneous demonstration on the square outside parliament, holding up signs saying, "That is not my Switzerland," placing candles in front of a model of a minaret and making another minaret shape out of the candles themselves.

"We're sorry," said another sign. A young woman pinned to her jacket a piece of paper saying, "Swiss passport for sale."

The referendum by the nationalist Swiss People's Party labeled minarets as symbols of rising Muslim political power that could one day transform Switzerland into an Islamic nation. The initiative was approved 57.5 to 42.5 percent by some 2.67 million voters. Only four of the 26 cantons or states opposed the initiative, granting the double approval that makes it part of the Swiss constitution.

Muslims comprise about 6 percent of Switzerland's 7.5 million people. Many are refugees from the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s and about one in 10 actively practices their religion, the government says.

The country's four standing minarets, which won't be affected by the ban, do not traditionally broadcast the call to prayer outside their own buildings.

The sponsors of the initiative provoked complaints of bias from local officials and human-rights group with campaign posters that showed minarets rising like missiles from the Swiss flag next to a fully veiled woman. Backers said the growing Muslim population was straining the country "because Muslims don't just practice religion."

"The minaret is a sign of political power and demand, comparable with whole-body covering by the burqa, tolerance of forced marriage and genital mutilation of girls," the sponsors said. They noted that, many years ago, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, citing an Islamic poem, compared mosques to Islam's military barracks and called "the minarets our bayonets." Erdogan is now Turkey's prime minister.

Anxieties about growing Muslim minorities have rippled across Europe in recent years, leading to legal changes in some countries. There have been French moves to ban the full-length body covering known as the burqa. Some German states have introduced bans on head scarves for Muslim women teaching in public schools. Mosques and minaret construction projects in Sweden, France, Italy, Austria, Greece, Germany and Slovenia have been met by protests.

But the Swiss ban in minarets, sponsored by the country's largest political party, was one of the most extreme reactions.

Wherever they go, they want to conquer and overwhelm the system.  Good thing all those Swiss have assault rifles.  they are going to need it.

Doesn't Islam mean "submission"?

So why is anyone surprised about this?

You obviously ignore the fact that much of the architecture in Europe is ISLAMIC in design. The Moors were the main builders, designers of what is Europe today. THe spires, turrets and smokestack like structures so common on castles in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and France only shows the influence of Islamic architecture in Europe. Without that influence what you know as OLD EUROPE would not even exist.

And somewhere along the line, Islam took a turn down the wrong path.  Instead of celebrating those things, we are arguing about burkhas, stoning of adultresous, etc.

Figures you would try to take this angle. There's a difference between buildings showing Muslim influence and Muslim religious structures towering above everything else ruining the European countryside. Now I know that you're a militant black Muslim so you're probably on the verge of blowing yourself up in a market full of women and children but give it a rest, apologist.

Muslims like to take credit for eveything, they can justify this by ignoring everything that existed before Islam.

YAWN...figure you would add your idiocy to the thread.

I know what.. I suggest giving all Arabs a big jar of VIAGRA and plane ticket to Switzerland. It won't be long before Switzerland is the new Islamic capital of Europe. Germany, England and France are already on the way to this end.

I am pleasantly surprised by this development. I hope this heralds a new age in the European consciousness and is the start of a cultural backlash against the deranged cave people that are multiplying Europe into Eurabia.

Sarkozy started this trend by supporting the ban against Burkas in public swimming pools and this is another baby step in the right direction. Let's see if the Swiss are now bombarded with terrorist retaliation as a result.

I am all for private religious freedom.  That being said, I completely agree with this decision.  Europeans need to preserve their historical architecture and their culture/traditions.  Too many muslims get into groups and try to change the city they immigrate to resemble their middle east homeland.  The policy should be...."your welcomed here but we're not changing our traditions, buildings or customs to accomodate you".

Would definitely vote for this in the U.S.
If they want to convert US/Europe into another muslim country, why don't those muslims just stay in the middle eastern countries.  Can you imagine how middle east leaders would like if groups of Americans forced their own settlements, churches, laws, customs on them?  No way, would never happen...so why should we let it happen here?
