This is an excerpt from an interview with the legendary Doug Hepburn, former world champion weightlifter, strongman and first man to bench 500 lbs (almost 600).....discuss
lifting is purely masculine whereas bodybuilding entails feminine traits. Bodybuilders remind me of a woman getting ready to go somewhere. Can you tell me that greasing your body up and posing in front of a mirror is masculine? A bodybuilder puts strength secondary to his physique, whereas the lifter puts strength foremost because it is more masculine to do so. The reason bodybuilding is on the upward trend is that the opposite sex have more and more influence over the males. Women do not like the large waistline necessary for the weightlifter . . .

only a man of great masculinity would wear a singlet. -That is all.

Good stuff, especially the interview.

To be fair, everyone involved in Olympic Lifting had to wear those, Grimek, Schmansky, Kono, Anderson, etc.... If not, they tossed you out on your ear. The hold out was probably done post contest.

Singlet vs. tiny posing thong hiked up to show 'striated glutes".......gotta go with the singlet being more masculine

Some of those pics don't look like they were taken at olympic events.. I think he enjoyed how snuggly they fitted around his junk.

I don't know.. the singlet seems more gay (if it can be) even if it does cover a little bit more. It's like wearing a thong and a pair of suspenders. It actually makes more queer when you're wearing more.

so are you saying that when looking at a photo of a guy performing a pretty crazy feat of strength all you can focus on is his "junk"? ;D

Haha, I'm just saying for a man who talks smack about bodybuilding he sure did enjoy his singlets.

Bossa, I read Dorian Yates used to feel the same way - he liked lifting but wasn't into donning on trunks (now, thongs, I guess) and posing in front of an audience. I can see why some people are into it, esp. if they have a pro caliber physique, but it's not something I'd do myself either.

IFBB should mandate singlets, this shit is getting out of hand.. especially for those in the first 3 rows at any bodybuilding show.
