Title: I hate my new job.....
Post by: webcake on December 05, 2009, 12:55:25 AM
Unfortunately this time i am actually starting a serious thread. Been in the job 2 months now and hate it. There really isn't an element of the job that i enjoy. There are parts i dislike, and there are parts i hate. I dread going into work and find it hard to relax on the weekends as i know Monday is right around the corner.

I have pretty much made up my mind about what i will do, but was just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation and what they did/what their advice is.

Sincerely,
webcke  :(

You probably need the money, so I wouldn't quit if I were you.

Work there long enough to be eligible for unemployment and then have them fire you because you can't do the job properly. Don't come in late. Don't cop an attitude. Just stick it out until you're eligible. When you are, just start fucking up. Have them fire you. Then you are free. I recently stuck it out with a job for almost 8 months that I hated. I hated my boss. I hated my bitchy colleagues. I hated the salary and the location. I waited until I was eligible for unemployment and then I started making mistakes at work. They gave me a verbal warning. Then a written warning. Then a final warning. Then they fired me. I'm collecting unemployment now (eligible for 8 months). At the same time I'm working as a valet on the weekends, making cash money. Two paychecks bro. Can't complain.

No, the current (dreaded) job is commercial property management.

Obviously having the qualification, getting a job in the fitness industry should be relatively easy. Just a matter of determining whether that is a suitable long term kind of job. Decisions decisions.....

I have realised that i can't fucking handle 9-5 office jobs. Just not for me. I need to be doing something active.........which is why fitness is a good fit for me. The army is also in the cards.

Office jobs suck. Couple things that happen are; you end up getting caught up in the office gossip and drama, next thing you know your fired and you're like 'what the fvck just happened?'' Next, you just sit on your ass most of the time and get fat and miserable. (my girlfriend has an office job, she's back into her 'winter' clothes again. love her either way though)

Being active is the best fit for me too. When I'm stressed and stay active I handle it better. Fitness is cool, you stay around the positive energy. Army is straight for getting ahead except you might get shot... if you can handle that then your good 8)
Fitness gets my vote.

I kinda discussed it with them today. They are somewhat dissapointed as commercial real estate, provided you are "good" at it, can be a fairly well paying, long term kind of career. But if you don't like something, it's unlikely you will be very succesful in it.

You can make a career in fitness, but the odds are somewhat stacked against you. Have to just wait and see what happens i guess.....

How are they stacked? All it takes is listening to goals, and putting together a fitness program. People come, people go, some serious some not, as with any job in life.
You'll find a knack for something. Life changes all the time and money ain't everything if you ain't at least halfway enjoying what your doing.

In regards to the odds being stackedagainst you in fitness, the fitness has terrible longevity rates. Around 80% quit within the first year. That doesn't mean you can't be good at it, but for most people it is a temporary job, rather than a career.

Quicker, yeah mate thats pretty much what i'm gonna do. Just a matter of deciding exactly what it is i want to do..... ;D :-\

the problem with fitness in sydney is the hours... the trainers in the city are working by 5.30am then have to sit around from 9-noon, train people during lunch then sit around from 2-5pm then train people until 8-9pm...

Yeah, the hours are somewhat "staggered" hours in fitness. But to be honest, i would rather staggered hours as opposed to straight 9-5 hours. If you can get a job close to home, even better.

Webcke i've worked almost 2.5 years in a shift work job which is shit, fuckheads there who have no life and need to pick on little bullshit things to pass the time. Almost got into fights with jealous fuckers etc etc. Some great people i have met and have fun but overall this is way below me.

All in the hope i can make it big or at least something from my business i keep pushing, of which at present i make about the same as i make from the job.

It's always going to be like that, i've worked in large companies and very small ones, especially when you push yourself you'll never be happy working with general clueless fucks and you'll hate things. That's life. People are shit  :D

Nursing is a great job in the States, especially if you are an RN. You make great money, get to work wherever you want (there is a huge shortage), and will always be around women.

Not for me, but I wish it were. I had to give someone an IV once and my hands were shaking so bad I could hardly get the needle in.

I spent 14 years doing jobs that I didn't like...unloading trucks, delivering mail, putting up mobile homes, etc.  Just have to stick it out and save your money until you're in the capacity to do what you like

I always thought this too, but unemployment is not paid by the government it is an insurance pool paid into by the employers.  So basically you're taking money from the fucked up job that you hate still.....that should make you feel better about it.

As far as you situation goes, yes I was there recently.  I worked for a large company here for five years in one of the most competitive industries there is doing sales.  For the first 2.5 years I wouldn't say I loved it, but I at aleast was content with it and enjoyed it somewhat.  The money was the best I've ever made and more than I thought I would make being that I don't have a degree.....for now at least.  Anyway, we got a new president and things started changing a lot.  The first sign of things to come was the head of sales support came down and started handing out a sheet to sign that basically said the commission plan was changeable at anytime.  We were told that they simply needed to make sure that they had everyone's on file cuz they weren't sure if they did and that no changes were planned.  ::)  No bullshit, within 2 hours of the forms being collected we get an email saying that the goals had increased and the bonus was gone.  And we all took it like little fuckin sheep.  More changes were made with the usual corporate spin about how this was an opportunity to make the plan work for you, you can actually make more, and you should just be happy you have a job.   >:(  They started doing things to cut costs, and many of the decisions took away our ability to sign  a lot of deals either from a competitively priced standpoint or from an inability to support the customers set up like our competitors could.  Up until about a year and a half ago at least my immediate managers were cool, but then I got switched to this little micro managing turd that saw himself as a sales guru.....nevermind that he never had done sales.  I was on FMLA already for a health condition, and then tore my ACL so I was missing a day or two a week going to appointments and he basically belittled me daily even though i'd still make goal that I wasn't committed.  He sat me down and gave me a speech about how he went through hard times too.  I asked him what they were and he tells me about how sad he was when his family moved here in high school, and how difficult his divorce was.  I'm like did you just compare your divorce that you caused by fucking the girl in sales support and a move as a child to a life long disease???   I got up and walked out and basically ignored him from that point on praying that he'd can me.  6 months later he finally did.  The great thing about my situation was that in between all this I signed a huge deal that payed a substantial amount, and the way our commission worked I got payed for working out, riding my mountain bike, taking a couple trips, and just relaxing for two months.  8)  I didn't file for unemployment until I actively started looking for work about two months later, and to be honest once I did I got pretty scared.  There wasn't shit out there I wanted to do.  I was determined not to end up in a situation like that and what you're going through again so I was picky.  After four months of looking I was starting to think I wouldn't have a choice though.  Then I got a call from a friend that he had given my name to someone and it panned out.  I start at the end of the month, and think it will be something I really enjoy.

OK, so there's the background...sorry so long.  Now for the advice.  I've learned like you that a big corporate culture/ typical cube bitch is not for me.  I also learned that a manager can have an enormous impact on your job happiness even in sales where you essentially write your own check.  In the 2.5 years of it being bad I made a lot and saved a lot which allowed me to be in a better position than most while unemployed.  The price for that was gaining 40lbs, developing high blood pressure and SVT, lot's of sleepless nights, bouts of depression, and absolutely dreading going to work everyday.  The trade off is not worth it bro.  You need to cover your own ass though so as another person said suck it up till you qualify for unemployment and then get yourself shown the door while looking for something now.  If you don't find something b4, take time after that to figure out what you would really enjoy doing, and pursue it til you get the interview, PREPARE your ass off for it and nail it.

If you made it through all of that you really are unhappy in your job :P  Best of luck to ya in finding something better that makes you happy!
IM NOT READING THAT SHIT SON

Before this, make an effort to have people start calling you T-Bone.

Jobwise I mostly hated working in an office.  I would prefer to try to work for myself w/me as the only employee and do manual labor such as landscaping/mowing/snow-removal or something like massage therapy.  Much less stress than working in an office with people :P

Maybe you should go to massage therapy school webster
Thats what I'm talking I sit in a damn office all day with phones ringing people talking it gets old after awhile, that being said I wouldnt want to be a roofer or hanging off high beams either, problem is I have material things I dont want to give up so its hard to drop it all and do something you like for way less money.

lol, Seinfeld always has the answers.

If you are still young then go back to school and get a meaningful credential that will enable a real career.  You may be young now, but the years will fly by before you realize it.  You don’t want to wake up 20 or 30 years from now with no meaningful work history or retirement accounts to speak of.

Turning up your nose at a 9-5 job?  You sound like another getbigger, “…could not imagine though being an office worker, cubicle, wearing a suit everyday kind of guy, how horrible is that!  totally not my personality! i like my personal freedom and individuality too much to have a normal 9 to 5 job!”  Do you really want to end up like this guy? http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=281208.0

I am not endorsing 9-5 jobs as nirvana, but turning up your nose and copping an attitude is for people who are independently wealthy; you are not in that group.

X2.
Young people, in particular, don’t seem to realize how important it is to have solid references behind you.  We just hired a new person in my office.  It came down to two final candidates, both of whom we liked a lot.  We were ready to choose one and make an offer.  We checked the references and poor references killed one of the candidates.  In one case, they did not want to speak ill of the candidate, but they offered to let us view the contents of the person’s employment file.  It was not pretty.   This person is really screwed because they have no idea that their references are so poor.  And because the negative information is in the employment files, it will still be there even when previous bosses, quit, retire, or die.  No one who sees this information will ever hire this person!

You can make a career in fitness, but the odds are somewhat stacked against you. Have to just wait and see what happens i guess.....

Few people excel in areas they detest.

And making a career in fitness can be extremely difficult – particularly depending on your location (supply & demand) unless you’re someone “special” within the industry.

There’s no 9-5 aspect, but most PT’s I’ve known bust their asses 24/7, which in many ways is a lot harder, and are just making ends meet.
And if you work as a trainer in a commercial/chain gym, many will make you sign no compete clauses prohibiting you from doing a lot of outside work.

In one case, they did not want to speak ill of the candidate, but they offered to let us view the contents of the person’s employment file.

I'm surprised they let you view this.

I guess that's the way to avoid being sued for defamation?

Also to webcke, be careful what you have online that is accessible by anyone.  We were going to call a guy for an interview but his twitter picture was so ridiculous (kind of funny actually but we were looking for someone who seemed a little more mature  ;D ) that he was out of the running as soon as we saw it.

I dunno know about the unemployment thing, danimal. I'm probably too proud to receive government handouts.

You’re a stand up guy, man.
There are lots of welfare pimps who leech and bleed the system, abusing the taxpayers’ “donations.”

I think your current situation exempts you from that class.
In the U.S. many company employees pay into unemployment - take a look at one of your pay stubs.
You may just be collecting your own money.

Just be careful of getting fired - as has been mentioned here quite a few times.

I spent 14 years doing jobs that I didn't like...unloading trucks, delivering mail, putting up mobile homes, etc.  Just have to stick it out and save your money until you're in the capacity to do what you like

I can’t believe I’m admitting this,  ;D but I agree with “Venom” Vince.

Many people’s jobs are a means to an end.
You can either bust your ass so you can party hard on the weekend, or you can save up enough that will allow you to pursue something better – like relocating or investing $$ in a bigger (well thought out) venture.

The problems occur when the stresses of your job affect you when you’re not even there.
This happens to a lot of people, and depending on the person, it can cause some serious problems down the road that may require therapy, medication, and… uh… "self-medication."

You're too young for that bullshit, dude.

Very true.  I’m not inclined to research this sort of thing (who has time to play online detective?) but two of my staff did that with some of our job candidates, printed what they found, and shared it with the rest of us.  In one case, we eliminated someone based on this information.  It wasn’t necessarily horrible, but we were looking for a way to winnow the field and the online stuff we found was a good excuse to do so.

QUIT THAT JOB!

Never do a job you don't enjoy!

If you can't figure what you enjoy doing yet - join the military and let them decide for ya for a couple of years or give them 20 and never have to work again in anything you hate doing.

You just might enjoy visiting new and exciting parts of this world and killing people or saving kids and civilians as a medic.

There are many options.

Sincerely,
webcke  :(
Webcke I was in the exact same situation about 2 years ago.  I got a new job that paid double what I was making prior, but I hated it.  I stuck it out for about 3 months then quit.  I was constantly feeling ill, depressed and tired.  Several times on my commute to work I almost took an exit to turn around and go home and never go back to work.  But eventually I did hand in my resignation and I did not regret it at all.

The downside is that I only had a part time job that paid terrible and wasn't great but was ok.  I had to struggle with that for over a year (job market went South) and it wasn't fun.  I started to think I would never find a good FT job, I was at an all time low...but eventually I got hired by my current company and I love it.  I love being there and look forward to going in everyday.  I got a promotion withing 3 months and I am currently continuing my education in order to move up even more with that company.  Did I mention I love my job?

So, my advices would be that if you hate everything about your job and you dread going in, and your weekends are ruined because of thinking of work, then you should quit yesterday!  Just work real hard on replacing it with something you love doing.

Good luck webcke, I hope you find a career you are happy with.

EDUCATE YOURSELF. OBTAIN A SKILL OR YOUR ENTIRE LIFE WILL SUCK.

Agreed for the most part.

I finally tapped into a skill I never realized my full potential for until last year. I started getting paid for it , 7 months later I was able to stop doing that particular skill and start using another skill I had been developing for the last 15 years and now my job description is as follows:

Work from home
Set my own schedule
10 hr work weeks
Zero stress
Travel  when ever I choose to

My business is virtual based and my income (only listed online generated income) is as follows:

July: $5,500
August: 5,900
Sept: 6,600
Oct: 8,560
Nov: 3,870
Expect Dec to be even lower but expect to explode when the new year arrives.
The great thing is I can still earn money in "real life job" along with my online job since it requires such little time.

Web, the best advice I can offer you is this:

1) Do what you find very fulfilling
2) Do something you are above average (if not good)at.

3) Stick with it

4) Good things will happen

I have realised that i can't fucking handle 9-5 office jobs. Just not for me. I need to be doing something active.........which is why fitness is a good fit for me. The army is also in the cards.
you know what, once you get a more "active" job, you will regret your 9-5 office job. Been there, done that. how old r u anyway.

Have to just wait and see what happens i guess.....
you ve got to have huge social/communication skills to be a GOOD trainer... Lots of psychology is required especially with female clients.

Leave on a high note like in seinfeld.
get packed up and ready to leave...wait until you tell a joke that gets everyone laughing, then walk out and never be seen again.
life isnt a sitcom for fuck sake. Quit watching tv and imitating the fictional characters in them.

Yes, that's how it's supposed to work.
Supposed to...

There are always loopholes.
Besides, unless the HR interviewer comes out and admits the specific information they got from a previous employer, it's one of those things that is hard to prove.

I think a lot of the degree of a background check has to do with the particular company and/or position applied for.

It sounds like Bay might work in an environment that goes over every detail with a fine-tooth comb.
Other places may just do a simple background check consisting of criminal & credit history.

If you left a company on less than good terms (terminated), then - if possible - give the name of a supervisor (or even a coworker) with whom you got along.
Companies know you won't volunteer shitty references, and if you provide a good one from the place that fired you, there's a chance that - if they even call at all - they'll call the person who liked you and will say good things about you.

A lot depends on how much research they're willing to do.

Hey Champ i read it all and i totally understand what it's like to be judged doing sales by someone who has no fucking idea. I worked for a big company like that and went to a very small one who was knocking off their business and it was the best job i've done. These companies get too big and think no-one can touch them.

Just a matter of deciding exactly what it is i want to do..... ;D :-\

Then you weed those people out. Last year we weeded out the "flakes" that wouldn't commit or take their training seriously. I would say we "fired" about 25-30 clients that we're just taking up a spot. We also changed policy and put expirations on their sessions (ex; if they baught 12 sessions they have to be used within 6 weeks) I should have done that long ago. We are also particular who we take on as clients and interview if they are serious about training and following our system of training. In other words....just don't take anyone who walks through the door. Their progress is a reflection of the trainer.

Tbh I see you going into baking.  ;D

Dude, you're young.  Make a list of 5 or 10 things that interest you and you think you'd enjoy doing for a living.  Don't leave something off because it requires education or you think there's no money to be made in it or it's embarrassing or whatever, just no criminal enterprises, ok?

Contact people.  Tell them why you're interested and see if you can get a short term job and some on site experience.  Talk to profs regarding purely academic careers.  Talk to your oldies about the things that interest you if you think they'll be supportive.  Bottom line is: just try a bunch of different stuff.  You're in a favorable position to do so as far as I can tell, young and with a minimum financial burden.  There's no law that says your first few jobs are going to forever control your destiny.  If you're lucky you'll land on something which yields both high profit and enjoyment.

Obviously, examine what it is you like and dislike about places you work.  Where you are now, if the people were all swapped out for a new set would that solve most of the problem?  If so, you know to not necessarily give up on the job or industry.  I'm a greedy bastard so I'd be keeping my eyes open for teh money.  Is there profit to be made from associated industries?  Could you broker services like cleaning, security, maintenance, landscaping?  Can you invent something?

Imo don't join the military.  The military can hold an allure for a young man.  I considered attending Annapolis but I'm glad I didn't.  You're removing any and all hope for self determination and locking in to a situation that you can't leave if you hate it.  And you have no say in being sent to some ass backward sandpit with no chicks to bang to get shot at and blown up because a bunch of rich Americans want to get richer, and all this before you even really get a chance to experience life as an independent adult.

Don't impregnate anyone and make that paycheck a necessity.

The public service has a vast array of bullshit jobs that pay well.

Either that or join the cops, then lateral to the plastic feds so you don't have to stay in Canberra all that long. If you want to be a cop, join the Commandos part time and then apply for the SOGs which you'll be accelerated into.

...then you can become a huge Jewish bastard with muscels, and possess a thousand yard stare.

Why the fuck would anyone who can use the internet, read books, and has some semblance of discipline EVER pay someone like webcke more than $15-$20 an hour?  I mean nowadays it's retarded to hire a personal trainer for $50+ an hour.  Especially some 20 year old has no prior history of anything.  I'd pay some 35-55 year old guy or girl who knows what it takes to really get into tip top shape, has some sort of background.  Webcke?  Has nothing.  So $15-$20/hr is more than enough as a personal trainer.  These idiots that spend $100/hr on personal training?  LMAO!

Personal Training is very boring to me, I like to see client's get results, however you hear the same old shit everyday. Women always want their ass and legs smaller and tits bigger. Men always want to lose fat and be bigger. I do it part-time, for me full time would be just listening to whiners about the same ole shit. The fitness/bodybuilding industry is also very hard to make decent living its 24x7 work plus the boring stories.

I know Webcke is the personal trainer of both Dennis Wolf and Jay Cutler, so this must provide him with a substantial income, even though he does not like his job.
I know that both Jay and Dennis are very motivated to train and also sexually aroused when Webcke calls them "huge aryan bastards with muscles" in the locker room when they are all in the sauna (no homo)

I know a whore that did a personal training course and now she travels the world with this rich fuck making like $100 an hour and living the dream. I don't think she really works at all. Just occasionally sucks the old guy's dick. Fucking living the dream (minus the dick sucking)

pass the Subiaco Oval
in a tracksuite holding
a togbag?

They might just sign you
to play for the Wallabies.

If you can kick at posts
some, you might even take
over from Matt Git4eau.

Sincerely,
webcke  :(

if you want to be successful you MUST love what you do.. so you have to leave this place and find a better one that fits your abilities and interests more.. just search inside yourself to know what you really like and what you can be good at, may be helping your father the old farmer in the farm is the best thing for a fat ausrtalian young man like you..
