Title: Peter Schiff on ATM Fees
Post by: Soul Crusher on December 08, 2009, 05:14:08 AM
Great clip.

The Govt complains about a bank making $2 on an ATM fee while it steals thousands.  That about sums it up.

uh.. I'm not ok with either.

Why not?

ATM fees are perfectly fair.  They allow you to access cash at all hours anywhere anytime, even from banks that are not your own.

They save you a ton of money in time and wait.

They cost money to operate, service, protect, etc.

Honestly, I never understood the gripe over ATM fees.

Do you have a problem when the bank charges you for a notary or a bank check endorsement?  How about a money order fee or wire charge?

oh yea, 2 bucks for pulling out a 20 is totally fair... STFU ::)  They rake in $4.5 billion annually from Americans alone. ::)  Just on ATM fees...  Are you insane? http://orlando.bizjournals.com/orlando/stories/2008/02/04/daily33.html

Then take out more and watch your spending.

I would rather pay $2 and get cash asap than drive to the bank, park the car, wait in line, deal with a dumb teller, and drive home.  That costs far than $2.00 in gas, time, alone.

it's not about what I do ::)  You don't usually pay when you use an atm from your bank and most people do that.  They rake in this cash off of people who get caught away and need cash in a hurry which happens when we don't expect it.  I'm fine with them charging a fee.  The fee is to much.  What the fuck is wrong with your head 333? 4.5 goddamned billion dollars... does that not register? One day you're all over the evil bankers and the next day you're acting like a loyal republican.  muliple personality?  got issues?

Look, if they charged .50 for the service, but it became so popular that so many people used it that they earned the same $4.5 billion, would you still have an issue with it?

For me, ATM is like a service I am paying for that saves me time and money.  I expect to pay for that service and really dont have an issue with it.

5/3 bank users get free access to their ATM's, and they pay for like 3 charges a month for non 5/3 ATM's.

At least they do for me, maybe I'm just special.  ???  ;D

I'd never use an ATM I had to pay my own money for.  I'd drive across town before I did that.

you'll pay 3 bucks in gas to save 2 bucks? :D

It's a struggle, either give my money to those damn dirty bankers, or the jihadist family that runs the local gas station.  :-X

LOL, wait, this is cracking me up... 333, so you really think if it's cheaper, people will be like, hey, I can pull money out for only .50 cents.  Why the hell not... hahaha...  I tend to think they would still be pulling money out of another bank atm at moments they were caught away and needed the money fast.  I doubt the number would increase that much and not sure I get the point even if it did.

You are complaining about the fees.  Should it be free?

That only means they will pass along the cost somewhere else on another service they provide.

Here is the problem I have with it, the banks have your savings checking account whatever and they use that capital to make loans ( for which they earn interest) or invest for which they get a return, yet they give you what 2% interest a year, then charge you for services they provide. I would guess that it is considerably cheaper to run an ATM machine than it is the employ a teller.

Thats why they dont usually charge u if you use their machine.

However, the ability to access your money from another bank any time anywhere, for not a lont of money relatively speaking does not get me upset.

If you dont want to pay the fee, use your own bank.

OK I can accept that, you are correct if I was to go into a bank that I have no account at I would be charged to cash a check...

you didn't read my posts since I already addressed your question.  Why ask a question that I've already clearly answered?  Slow down trapper keeper.

Now, why not 4.50 for fees?  People who need the money in a hurry will probably still be paying it.  Hell if the demand is there, go for it right? ::)

If it goes to that, maybe another bank will change $2 and draw more customers who are looking to save the $2.50.

I dont know what your gripe is with ATM fees.  To me, its a service no different than a notary, bank check fee, wire fee, money order fee, etc.

it's not that they charge, it's that they charge to much.

Perhaps, but maybe they should do a percentage vs a flat fee.  I agree $2 on 20 is too much.

But 2 dollars on 300 is a steal.

I don't care for paying ATM fees so I keep more cash on hand.  I think charging $2-3 per transaction is high but there is a cost factor for the banks and a convenience factor for the consumer that doesn't plan ahead.
Agree, as long as the fee doesn't keep increasing, I don't think it's a huge issue, we can always choose not to use them.
