Houston elects first openly gay mayor
Annise Parker claims victory with 53% of the vote in Saturday's mayoral runoff.
Houston
Annise Parker, a lesbian who has never made a secret or an issue of her sexual orientation, on Saturday was elected mayor of Houston, the nation's fourth-largest city.
With the victory, Parker, 53, will become the first openly gay mayor of such a large American city. The population of the Texas city is about 2.2 million.
Her victory comes two days after Democrats in California's Assembly unanimously tapped John Perez of Los Angeles to be their speaker. He will be the first openly gay lawmaker to hold the powerful post.
With almost all of Houston's 738 precincts reporting, Parker had 53% of the vote and Gene Locke 47%, according to the Harris County website.
The fiercely contested battle leading up to Saturday's balloting was marked by anti-gay rhetoric. Locke, 61, condemned such tactics.
Meanwhile, gay and lesbian political organizations nationwide rallied to support Parker, the city controller.
Parker and Locke, both Democrats in the nonpartisan race, made it to the runoff after garnering more votes than two other candidates on Nov. 3.
Several smaller U.S. cities have openly gay mayors, including Portland, Ore.; Providence, R.I.; and Cambridge, Mass.

How is it progress when her sexuality is an issue for anyone?
People should be concerned or happy Houston got a good mayor, not a gay one.

Seems it was the homophobes who made her sexuality an issue, what with the smear campaign they led against her.

I haven't seen her make it an issue.
That's what matters.
She's not trying to play the gay card.
It's her opponents doing that apparently.
Perhaps her being elected could be a small step towards society not giving a fuck.
-
If BF is telling the truth, which I don't know, but if he is, the other side made it an issue.

Then why does the news keep saying "first OPENLY GAY" mayor.
Why cany people just keep it to themselves? Lindsey Graham is obviously a homo. does he make an issue of it? no.
Its only the drama queen gays who parade around their sexuality in these instances.
Let her balance the budget, cut taxes, and do a good job and keep her vagina out of it.

the vast majority of society doesnt give a fuck hedge and i dont think anybody here is saying she is playing the gay card.
Point is the gay community is playing the gay card, celebrating something that shouldnt have even been a side note. ::)
I didnt see anything where her opponents b/c there where 2 other ppl in the race were playing the gay card...

I was addressing how she ran based on what BF said which I don't know the facts of. But if what the troll said is true, it's a valid point. She can't help what others write about her you idiot.
