Flat bottom shoes are really good for legs...much greater stability.
I wouldn't wear cross trainers, indoor soccer shoes or something similar works best.
ditto for calves.

thanks guys

Yes shoes with a thin, flat sole would be best. Worst are those shoes with like the shock absorber looking heals.

i think the closet thing tp barefeet is the best...especially for calves!! cause u get the most strech n movement...ive wore wrestling shoes for all workouts for 15+years..only time i dont is when im doin my powerliftin squats cause for me the heel works best also the stability for trainin with heavy weight like 600-800..now when im just bodybuilding squats always wresting shoes i luv them..im also a decent barefoot waterskier and it toughens my meet greatly for that sport as well..plus they r like 20 bucks

The key to weightlifting/powerlifting shoes is the hard sole, as it helps with leg drive out of hole in certain lifts. As for the heel, it is more of a lifter's personal choice in powerlifting, you'll notice over the years that heel height, etc.... changes a bit over the years.
For weightlifting, it's the combo of the heel plus the hard sole that is helpful during the lifts. It has to do with leg drive and ankle, shin, and pelvis position during certain parts of the lifts. It's a bit technical for a short post, but you'll notice it and understand it if you ever take up O/Ling. Most Weightlifters prefer the low cut shoes for ankle mobility.
Also, needless to say, your lifting shoes should be the tightest you can get away with for stability, perticularly in width.
For most general lifting, Adidas Sambas or Converse Chuck Taylor's should be good enough.

The flatter, the better. That's why most powerlifters wear ballet shoes. If you think that looks gay (what most people would agree with), try martial arts shoes like the one from Adidas or Nike, they look great and have a similar paper thin structure.
