Great movie and Van Damme was ripped to shreds!

the more I think about it, the more I think because of Van Damme movies we now have the UFC and MMA, he was really the guy that made martial arts cool again in the 80's and while he was at his peak (early 90's) the UFC started to come to fruition.

Segal is actually pretty badass in real life and would pimpslap Van Damme. I havent watched it but on his reality show hes a deadly shot too I was told. And yes, Chuck Norris would wreck both of them at the same time! Superman wears Chuck Norris pajamas.

Note at 2:12 where he does the front snap kick followed immediately by a round house -- Sweet!. I practiced that over a thousand times before I tried it out in practice. It actually worked. A thousand times sounds like a lot but not really. I'd practice it at least 10 times a day six days a week so it only took less than 4 months before I felt confident to use it. Many here are too young to remember but traditional martial arts were very static and stiff and rarely worked in real life. Bruce Lee really revolutionized martial arts during his time because his style was very relaxed, fluid and dynamic. He borrowed a lot from boxing and fencing.

I watched Dragon the Bruce Lee Story  2 days ago LOL :-)   wasn't Bruce Lee's methods and ideas revolving around just what you said that Karate and traditional martial arts are not enough for real life attacks and that new methods must be applied to take them to a level beyond the ring, enter Jeet Kune Do!

What made the difference was that Bruce Lee was a strong proponent of live sparing where you are actually hitting your opponent. Just like in boxing and Muy Thai. In TMA (traditional martial arts) they did away with that because they just wanted to get a lot of paying customers and they knew they would lose a lot of paying students once they started actually getting punched in the face. Many guys like the IDEA of being a fighter but not the REALITY of fighting. It can get pretty brutal and it's not for everyone. It wasn't easy as a young kid at that time trying to find a place that actually did full contact sparring but I did. It was an 2 hour round trip bus ride and then I'd have to walk about a mile to the school.

BTW, when I would walk from the bus stop to the school I'd go through this place in Hawaii called Fort Street Mall. It was just a walkway where there were shops and stuff. There was a magazine store that I'd past it was the first time I saw a picture of Arnold. He was on the cover of some muscle mag. It was just called "Muscle". I was like "OMFG!" I never saw anything like that in my entire life and it just blew my mind! I never thought a human being could look like that. I couldn't afford to buy the magazine but I would always stop by the window on the way to class and just stare at that cover mesmerized. I did it until the next issue replace it. Anyway, this was the cover:

This was one of my more enduring fantasies of how I would win a girl's heart. She'd think I was a geek (notice how the chick shakes her head when Bruce Lee did his "pre-fight kata routine" before fighting). And then when I would casually and effortlessly kick some major ass like it was nothing she'd melt before my eyes (just like this chick did).

Another one of my unrealized fantasies -- but I'm still working on it.

As a preteen at the time Bruce Lee really inspired a lot of kids in Hawaii (and around the world). We were always sparing and trying to act like Bruce Lee. Even now I think he's an enduring figure in martial arts.

Amazing how your perceptions are as a kid. I remember when I first saw this 40 second scene of Return of the Dragon. As I was sitting there in the theater and watched as Bruce Lee did his "lat spread" I remember thinking to myself, "Man, this guy looks just like those guys in the magazines!" Truth is, at 5'6" 135lbs they don't even have a weight class that low in the UFC. Hell, it's getting harder and harder to find women at that height and weighing that low nowadays. LOL!
