What are some solid to good notebooks on the market? I need something to supplement my laptop and my desktop when I am traveling. Something small, but powerful. I'll spend coin, but I would prefer something thats a little more economical because I'm only going to be using this thing to browse the web and to stay connected. However, I know that you get what you pay for so I am open to anything. This is bodybuilding related because I will be browsing Getbig constantly.
What about the Dell mini 10 @ $500.00?
Intel®Atom®Processor Z530 (1.6GHz/533MHz FSB/512K Cache)
Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition SP3
160GB, 2.5inch, 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
1GB3 DDR2 SDRAM4

This is a rather impressive Vintage Notebook. Well worth the money if you can find it.

If you don`t want to break the bank, you could always just go with a multi-colored college ruled Notebook. Might I suggest pink or polk-a-dots for a a tailored fit to your personality Body88.

What a scholar! For such a smart guy you'd think you would have caught that mistake.

Spirax also makes a great product with Heavy Grade Paper and its spiral. The lines are printed with a bright Indigo and Purple Orchid and there is also a custom line on the inside cover where you can put your name. Really good buy.

You need some new material. This is boring and lacks creativity. I mean seriously.

I currently use an HP DV7t its 17.3 inches widescreen and freaking heavy (but I'm a bodybuilder so I should be ok with that lol), picture is AMAZING (excellent for watching HD youtube videos and porn) and I'm running Windows 7 and 4GB ram with a Core 2 Duo proccessor (I wanna upgrade to 8 GB because I do a lot of heavy work on Autocad for my work).
"I told Microsoft I need Getbig.com to load faster. I'm a PC and Windows 7 was my idea"
Shamefully I will also say that a few years back I had a thinkpad touchscreen tablet, and that was excellent because I used to lay it flat on the treadmill stand and browse getbig as I did my morning cardio! ;D
-

You need a new notebook to doodle in so you can show family services where exactly Uncle Roger touched you last Christmas Eve.

An owning? Ha-ha, another newbie wasting Getbig's bandwidth. Nothing that TA says is funny or creative. It's material thats been used 100 times by posters much more funny than him.

No. TA's come and go all the time. A dime a dozen. He lacks creativity and humor. I've seen better "owning" by Vince G.

Seems like all netbooks I've seen are limited to 1GB of ram.
I was just checking out the HP mini and it's available with more ram then 1GB. Do I need more for browsing and email?
-
Seems like all netbooks I've seen are limited to 1GB of ram.
I had a MSI wind 1o inch with 2 gigs of ram, and it would handle overclocks of 25% with ease...I modified it myself...
Those first MSI winds can be found for 250 online now
-
You guys are aware that the Dell mini and the HP mini are not really notebooks, but more so "netbooks"
And an Intel Atom Processor is SLOOOOOOOW, regardless of what you are doing I would never recommend that!
For 500 dollars you can get some laptops that are far more superior than what you posted!

I did not. I know shit about laptops and the like. What would you recommend? I want something small because I will be traveling with it, a lot. Keep in mind that I will be using this thing to surf the web, check out youtube and send email.

Thanks. Anything a bit cheaper. Is this "small"?

That laptop is 13 inches, so I its on the smaller size - but its not tiny.
Note though that it doesn't have a cd drive (most super small laptops don't) so I dunno if this is important to you or not, if it is you may need to go bigger.
There is definitely cheaper, let me take a look around.
Another decent option: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Satellite+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Pentium%26%23174%3B+Processor+-+Nova+Black/9549081.p?id=1218122294916&skuId=9549081
I saw some under 500 ones let me check real quick!

Oh and P.S. my parents have gone through like 3 HP minis they were terrible, and my mother in law has a Dell mini and she hates it because they are super slow!

Well I ordered and paid for a Lenovo W700DS. It is the most awesome laptop out there. Was supposed to be shipped on Dec. 10 then it went to Dec 18 and then Dec 24 and then Dec 28. and finally Jan. 6 All during this time I tried to talk to someone and no answer only a recording to leave a message. Not once did I get a call back. I emailed them and it took 10 days to respond. I finally talked to some fucking guy from India that I couldn't understand and all he did was read from some script. In short they have the worst customer service of any company I have dealt with. I cancelled my order and went to Fry's and bought an Acer 8940 with an 18" screen. It was a letdown not getting the Lenovo but I could imagine how shitty it would be to deal with them if something ever went wrong.
-
This dell is actually really good for its size and price (11 inches so its small, and runs a pentium processor and 4 GB of ram so it will handle well):

Again no cd drive and its 520 so I dunno if thats past your budget!

I bought my oldest daughter an Acer netbook. She says she loves it. But none of those have a DVD built in. She just wanted something to take to the beach and be able to get on the internet. She has a desktop at home

Well that is what I heard but when I buy something I would like it when they say it will be delivered. I had no problem if someone would explain to me why so long but no answer ever. I was getting so pissed off. This one was almost $5,000 the way I had it customized but I bought it on Black Friday and they had a great sale going on so it ended up only costing around $2500. Oh well. The Acer is really good though I got. 6gb ram and a 500gb hard drive. TGhe 18" screen is unreal. It has a gig of dedicated video too so it seems to be really good. Heavy though for a laptop at around 10 pounds,

That ACER sounds bad ass like no other, I would've like an 18 inch screen, but I settled for 17.3 because of price :-D
-
i got a small laptop from 199computerStore on ebay.
it was $350 and pretty quick.
Loaded with the wireless card, does the job.
It's been dropped, lost, left lying around, and it's only $350 to replace if needed.

It is really nice. I like the backlit keyboard. The screen is just awesome. Very fast and it has Blue Ray too.

If you're looking for something really small with great battery life check out this Toshiba. It weighs less than 3 lbs and I've gotten a legit 8 hours out of the battery. Yes it's slower than a high-powered laptop or desktop but for checking email and things like that it's just fine.

Thanks, how about for youtube, video and surfing the web?
-
I'm posting from an Acer Aspire One. Very small, but had to upgrade the battery as the original battery was dirt (1.5 hours at best...now getting 6 hours). Good for browsing and a little bit of word processing.
-

I've never had any problem with youtube, streaming radio or anything like that.
You might want to go to the store and check out the netbooks just to make sure the smaller screen and keyboard are acceptable for you.

I just took a ride to Bestbuy and you're right, in person, they are ultra small. I might as well spend 500.00 and get a smaller laptop. The kids they have working there are scum, so none of them were helpful at all.

Again this is running an ATOM processor, and in my opinion even that is too slow for just checking e-mail, my mother in law who has very basic needs from a laptop, (ie checking mail and light internet browsing) and she is constantly complaining about how slow it is. Spend a little bit more for a pentium, or AMD athalon dual core.

The atom processor is awesome bro..It can be tweaked like a muthaF ker...
I had an MSI wind which had that same 1.6 GHZ atom processor...However, it had a factory overclock feature, where i was able to get a 25% overclock with no problems, so that pushed the processor speed to well above 2.0 ghz...I also doubled the ram to 2 gigs....threw in a 8 gig SSD for more speed...
Plus i also found special editions of windows xp on the net that were fully functional at 170 mb installed...
All in all i was able to boot windows Xp in about 14 seconds
i hear the atom can be pushed to about 2.5 ghz..
MSI has great US based customer service

Intel Atom N270 Overclocked to 2385MHz, Probably the Fastest Atom Ever
Have you ever thought of overclocking your shiny little netbook, probably not, but here's what might happen if you're wondering. In my humble opinion this is ridiculous, but it's possible. Overclocking experts from Team Australia, using an ordinary MSI Wind U100 netbook and a single Kingston 2GB DDR2 667Mhz SO-DIMM, have done the unthinkable, overclock the hell out of an Intel Atom N270 netbook processor. If you remember, MSI recently released a v1.09 BIOS for the Wind that allows overclocking. That's exactly what Team AU have done, dismantle an MSI Wind netbook, put some LN2 cooling and use the latest BIOS to max the Intel Atom CPU frequency. The end result is pretty good, they've managed to push the poor 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU to an amazing 2385MHz (FSB 199 x 12 multiplier) and take a CPU-Z snapshot. There's really no point in doing that, but it's pure fun. The full discussion thread for this insane experiment is posted over at XtremeSystems.
-
I can't do any of that. Why do all the netbooks have atoms? There isn't one that has a better chip, stock?
microsoft and there licensing agreement with Intel is why
microsoft agrees to sell discount versions of windows, with the condition that the computer can't have higher than a 1.6Ghz processor, and one gig of ram...
If the computer has higher specs than that, the manufacturer will have to pay the full price for MS windows.
the atom is the best processor right now..However, Nvidia makes an awesome graphics chipset for these newer netbooks, called the tegra.

Long story short, I should buy a thin laptop as ACH has been saying for the last 5 hours?
-
My beef is not with MSI, although I don't know much about them, I saw a SWEET one in the Microcenter store near my house running a Core Solo processor (I'd actually recommend it) the ATOM processor is terribly slow, how do you tweak it? will the perfomance be significantly better? I've just seen how they run and would never buy one for myself!

MY tweeked MSi wind would boot windows in 14 seconds..That means with a little playing around, it can be faster than most Full-sized laptops
Plus MSI makes a factory overclock which they give you full warranty...that bumps up the processor speed to 2.0ghz..It's just a program that you download from MSI.com..then you simply press FN+ f10 together and the extra speed kick in..sort of like a turbo...
the wind also runs windows 7 pretty well two..

Well I have to be honest, I have yet to use an ATOM running windows 7, rumor has it that its better than it was on vista, but I've read mixed things. My personal experience with the ATOM was a disaster on multiple pc's.
As I mentioned I'm currently running Windows 7 on a Core 2 Duo, and the differnece between it and vista has been amazing so maybe it'll be the same with the ATOM. But if he's around his budget ($500) why not just go for the Dual Core? Makes no sense to go for the ATOM?
-
Also keep in mind, others may not have the same computer skills as you do, and buying an ATOM and tweaking is not an option because they may just not know how to do it. So maybe it would be better to go with the better processor out of the box.

MSI sure has been releasing some sexy looking laptops, I know that in the past they used to produce motherboards for other companies but then expanded to their own brand, good for them, always nice to see new players coming into the market!

i've owned my macbook for over a year and it runs as fast as the day i bought it.....and i look at ALOT of porn
i'm not a computer geek but i can tell you that i don't need any antivirius software or anything- my mac is just immune to all that shit

yes, true they have always produced some very high quality computer components..However, they have taken the lead IMO when it comes to ultra mobile PC's.
Great quality, good American Based customer service

i don't run any anti-virus stuff on my machines with windows 7...Anti virus software makes computers very slow...I also look at my fair share of porn, and download many of gigs of music and video's at a time..
macs are to expensive, and hard to use, lots of stuff isn't compatible with macs..
it's a no brainer

Actually I'm completely against owning a Mac - I'm a total PC guy, but I just saw today that Apple dropped the price of macbooks for student to a decent number:

the money i spent on my mac is well worth it because both of my PC laptops shit the bed after a year (each of them) while my mac is, seriously, just as goo as the day i bought it
it is pricey but YOU ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
don't buy into the anti-apple propaganda

the atom processor is more powerful than the celeron processor. I was able to get a netbook to start windows in 14 seconds..So if you know what you doing, they can provide lots of value and utility..

I found a very slim notbook with a celeron processor in it for a good price. I don't know how to do all this modding shit that you speak of, so i need to work with a "stock" processor. Is the celeron an adequate processor for what I want to do? Surf the web, watch video - email?
Here are the stats and the notbook cost 400.00
Intel® Celeron® Processor SU23003 (1.2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MBL2 Cache)2
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium8
2048MB DDR2 Dual-Channel 667MHz Memory5
160GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive6
11.6" HD Widescreen Ultrabright™ LED-backlit Display (1366 x 768 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio)7

You need a new notebook to doodle in so you can show family services where exactly Uncle Roger touched you last Christmas Eve.

what is the best notebook for browsing Getbig?
WTF!
It's a two bit PHP forum....you make out like its a CGI production requiring 16GB of RAM
listen up you, and listen real good ----> get on, post a few insults and hit the piss....a Pentium 3, 512MB ram can make this happen
Since I put an off topic question on the main forum, it needs to be bodybuilding related, hence the title.
