Title: iPhone Killer? Google Unveils Nexus One "Superphone"
Post by: Bodybuilding Related on January 05, 2010, 03:35:30 PM
(http://www.mobilecomputermag.co.uk/img/fckImages/news/2010/01/nexus-one-endadget/google-nexus-one-01.jpg)

Calling it their "superphone," Google unveiled the Nexus One on Tuesday, marking the online search giant's first leap into the smartphone market.

The phone, which goes head to head with Apple's darling of the market, the iPhone, is sold only through a Web store operated by Google and, unlike the iPhone and most other current smartphones, is available either with or without mobile service.

"We are very happy to be able to offer a choice," said Mario Queiroz, Google's vice president of product management.
T-Mobile is the initial service provider. Verizon in the United States and Vodafone in Europe will be coming on board later, and more operators are expected.

Already available Tuesday, the phone costs $180 with a contract or $530 unlocked, leaving the phone open to other carriers.

Among the Nexus One features Google announced at an invitation-only event at its California headquarters was text without typing. A voice-enabled keyboard allows users to send texts, e-mails or Facebook updates by speaking into the phone.

It is a global-system device with a 3.7-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, an accelerometer and a compass, according to Google.

Nexus One runs the latest version of the Android operating system, Android 2.1, which is also made by Google but runs on other phones as well.
"It pushes the limits of what's possible of a mobile phone today," said Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC, which designed the Nexus One.

Google recently released the phones for use by some of its employees, leading to the inevitable appearance of videos and unofficial reviews online.
The move has prompted online chatter about an "iPhone killer," a phrase bandied about before every major smartphone debut. But reviewers who saw the phone pre-release have more modest expectations.

"I don't think anything is an iPhone killer," said Kevin Burden, a mobile industry analyst with New York-based ABI Research. "Was the iPhone a Blackberry killer? It's never going to be that one device that was promised to us a decade ago."

Google spokesmen on Tuesday repeatedly stressed their phone's openness: allowing multiple service providers and applications from multiple developers, unlike Apple's one-stop shopping approach for the iPhone.

But they downplayed suggestions of becoming an "iPhone killer."

"I think the message isn't to the iPhone specifically," Google Vice President of engineering Andy Rubin said. "I think it's to consumers. I think choice to consumers is an important thing."

Finally, I can throw my old-fashioned compass in the trash.  In the event that the crap hits the fan, I'll simply turn on my gPhone and log in to see which direction I should be heading to loot, rape and pillage.

Droid is good nuf for me - the animated bg's are meh. the voice activated keyboard is also a "meh" for me, droid already has the voice activated search. Why remove the keyboard - it's one of my required features? The better CPU is what I'm missing. ah well...

I wanna know how easy/hard it is to sync your music to phones like these (the Droid and Nexus One).  Assuming you can do it, anybody know what programs you have the option of using to sync your music onto these things?

It is not like itunes. (for better and for worst) I think you have to drag and drop supported music to the device/card. Or used the amazon mp3 app.

On appearances alone Iphone has it beat. Iphone has that polished sleek look to it. This phone, that grey looks cheap in comparison. How you dress up the package can tell alot about the package itself. If designers want their concept to have a cetain "image", they must design it for that. Granted, there isn't much one can design on oblong shape. But Iphone just looks slick and expensive.

Plus, $530 unsupported? And by Summer time, there will probably be a new Iphone out, no thanks.

Yeah, I've gotten better at it, but typing is still an issue that I never had with my flip phone.  Back then, you could easily text while driving.

HTC has a phone with AT&T that was supposed to be the answer, but it didn't have full HTML and was a bit too buggy to compete with the iPhone.

I'm a slave to my iPhone.  Anything that allows me to watch football and view porn during church is aces with me.

Lack of physical keyboard will kill this phone - if it had one it might have a prayer.

Someone has got to release something that has the looks/power/desireability of the Iphone that slides out to reveal a full size QWERTY keyboard when the phone is flipped horizontally on its side in your hands.

I am hoping Blackberry is the first to market with said phone - until then I will just stick with the Blackberry I have.

Blackberry recently ditched the trackball for a new "device" (not sure what they call it) in the same spot as the trackball used to be but much more durable and resistant to dust. I saw the Curve 2 at Verizon store and it is using it instead of the old trackball and I was told that the Tour 2 which is being launched in 1st quarter of 2010 will also be ditching the trackball.

The Nexus One phone from Google is out of the bag and the reviews are beginning to trickle in. Overall, it’s being painted as a solid offering, and while it may not be an iPhone killer, it certainly may give other Android phones a run for their money. But in the midst of all the praise that typically accompanies a strong PR push, some of the device’s shortcomings are being ignored, namely its inherent inability to provide users with a comparable mobile app experience to the iPhone platform.

As the smartphone market continues to mature, the hardware between competing smartphones will inevitably converge and eventually become more of a footnote. That being the case, the significant differentiating factor between smartphones going forward will be software, and Apple in particular has made it quite clear that it views the iPhone as a software platform more than anything else. Indeed, the reason iPhone killers continually fail to live up to the hype is because competitors like to blindly focus on hardware feature sets instead of addressing the actual strengths of the iPhone - it’s slick UI and immensely popular app store.

The specs on the newly unveiled Nexus One are undoubtedly impressive - 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, a solid 512 MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera, and a generous 3.7-inch display - but lost in the hype of Google’s foray into the smartphone market is the device’s complete inability to compete with the iPhone when it comes to software. Here’s why.

First and foremost is the fact that the Nexus One does not include multitouch, even though the Android OS is technically capable of supporting it. For whatever reason, the tech media is in love with discussing hardware at the expense of focusing on the software, and no one seems to be mentioning that the absence of multitouch is a very big deal. While we may ordinarily think of multitouch in the context of “pinching to zoom” on a webpage or on Google Maps, it’s functionality extends far beyond that and affects not only the overall UI experience, but also the quality of apps capable of running on the Nexus One in the first place.

If you take a look at the top grossing apps on iTunes, you’ll notice a bevy of popular apps that require multitouch support. After all, how else are you going to play games like FIFA ‘10 or Assassin’s Creed on a touchscreen? Without multitouch, the breadth of apps developers can create for the Nexus One is necessarily stunted, and it therefore lessens the chance that someone is gonna come along and create a killer app for the Android OS that will generate enough interest to sway users away from the iPhone. But even more problematic is the simple fact that many of the more popular and downloaded apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch will flat out be non-existent for the Nexus One. And so begins a vicious cycle - smaller app catalog = fewer downloads = less revenue for developers = diminished interest in the platform = smaller app catalog.

Second, even if the Nexus One did include multitouch functionality, the device still falls short as only 190 MB of the 4GB of memory it comes with is usable for storing apps. 190 MB is nothing, and as games become more complex, it’s not uncommon to see file sizes in the 50-80 MB range these days. Nexus One users can of course add additional memory all the way up to 32GB, but there’s something to be said for a device that’s everything you need it to be straight out of the box.

So even if we temporarily put aside the obvious fact that the quality and depth of apps on the Android Marketplace simply can’t hold a candle to iTunes, the lack of mulitouch on the Nexus One (and to a lesser extent, its paltry app space of 190MB) ensures that the iPhone’s reign as the smartphone to beat will continue unabated.

Lastly, you have to wonder why Google has refused to officially include multitouch in its Android OS. Some have stated that Google is afraid of a patent lawsuit from Apple, with some even speculating that Apple flat out told Google legal action would commence should it ship an Android OS with working multitouch functionality. While a company like Palm might be willing to roll the dice with the Palm Pre knowing that they have an in-house patent arsenal at their disposal, Google, in contrast, has nothing of the sort.

Ahead of the expected mid-year launch of Apple's fourth-generation iPhone, the expected crop of rumors and leaks have begun to surface. Today, in a report  KT Telecom said that the iPhone 4G could arrive as early as April of this year, equipped with a powerful dual-core processor, improved graphics and video-chat capability... and, unexpectedly, with a removable battery.

Quoting a "high ranking executive" at Apple's exclusive South Korean carrier, the Korea Times report asserts that KT and Apple have been in talks over when the device will come to market. KT reportedly wants to sell the new phone to its large corporate clients in April, in what it calls (somewhat confusingly) a "litmus test." It's claimed that an early introduction to the Korean market will be necessary to counter a rush to Android devices. According to the executive,Apple and KT had reached “a broad consensus to introduce the advanced models as early as possible.” After the "test," regular customers would be able to buy theiPhone 4G in June, which is closer to the usual midsummer timeframe for the release of new iPhone models.

The report also claims that the iPhone 4G will have a dual-core processor as well as an upgraded graphics engine, and sport an improved OLED display. Though no specifics were mentioned in the article, it has often been speculated that the next-generationiPhone would use the new ARM Cortex A9 CPU with a PowerVR SGX545 graphics core. The Korea Times article also flags a removable battery as “highly likely”, as well as video-conferencing capability, which would suggest that the phone would include a front-facing camera. An improved still camera is also supposedly on tap for the new device.

The next batch will accept CDMA.

Quote
Verizon Wireless will begin offering Google's Nexus One smartphone on March 23, with Vodafone selling the device in April according to industry news sources.

Neowin cited an anonymous Google employee for the Verizon launch of the Google Android 2.1-based Nexus One, which sources such as Unwired View said has passed FCC inspection for use on Verizon's CDMA network.

Specifically, the FCC has just approved an HTC-built CDMA smartphone with the model name PB99300, numbers putting it in close proximity with the GSM/HSPA version of the Nexus One, which is coded PB99100.
