Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998. McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade.
"I wish I had never touched steroids," McGwire said in a statement. "It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

in his defense, he wasn't on the gas when he hit 49 in 86 which was his rookie year.

Yawn. In other news, Mark McGuire admited today that the sky is blue. ::)

does it make him gay that he injects needles in his butt?
-
What does this have to do with Pete Rose not being in the HOF! I ask you.
-
does it make him gay that he injects needles in his butt?
Bay would say so.
-
He realized how A-Rod sort of came clean and became a World Series hero this year. Amazing how the yankees win and he doesn't get chastised.
McGuire wants into the HOF real bad but now admitting won't help him. Those votes he got were from the one's that trusted him and now know he's a monkey.
-
An athlete using steroids? Get the fuck out?! People always look for an edge in life. McGwire can thank steroids for healing his back and extending his career. It also made him a ton of money. He has nothing to apologize for. An aging Hollywood actress gets lipo, face life etc. to extend her career. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE

this news does come very close after the results of the last HOF class was voted on and Mark fell well behind ( i think he got somewhere between 40-25 percent of the votes)
-
I would be shocked if Roger Clemens admitted to using them..
It must feel like coming out of the closet for a homo... Admitting you used steroids..
I have never told anyone in real life, except for a buddy who would inject me when i was a newbie...

I can't believe he is going to get away with lying to Congress. That's pretty fucked up.

Politicians lie to us all the time. Their careers are created and built upon lies. Fuck Congress

LOL Dude I agree that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying if you or I went up in front of Congress and lied our asses would be in jail.
-
The realization that he'll never make the Hall of Fame without an admission has become clear over the past three years of voting. So he has nothing to lose and possibly will garner a few more votes for his "honesty" plus a $50,000 advance for his "tell-all" book.
And all this time, we all thought the muscles, home runs, and acne were mere side effects of "superior genetics".
-
I can't believe he is going to get away with lying to Congress. That's pretty fucked up.
I think he just said that he's not here to talk about the past...he never said that he didn't use steroids like
Rafael Palmeiro
-
Because if anyone else would have lied in front of Congress we'd be thrown in jail.
actually, rafael palmeiro (from the last time I checked) never got arrested
I could be wrong on this one
speaking of Palmeiro, I'm pretty sure Selig had him killed or like Erased or something cuz i haven't heard a peep about/from that guy since he was outed
-
I hate how some nerdy geek writers get to choose who goes into the Hall and who doesnt...

you beat me to it ;D

I agree. Just making a statement.

Or the bottle of Andro in his locker. ::)
-
McGwire had to admit that he took steriods, due to congress making most of all prohoromones classfied as steriods lol. In another 50 year God knows what else congress will declare a steriod, probably making red meats illegal because of the amount of muscle they build. ::)
-
How about 'acting" you don't speak English under oath... :o Like this honkey, cracker...(no racist).

WOW, tell me something i DONT know..................
He's still not getting into the HOF...............

That 25% that did vote for him gave him the benefit of the doubt but now he lost all of their votes.

HIS OVERALL NUMBERS SUCK......
Post numbers or it didn't happen... :o
-
If a juiced Clemens is pitching to a juiced McGwire, Rodriguez, and Palmiero, who has the advantage?
-
Post numbers or it didn't happen... :o
dude, off the top of my head career b.a 261 or so,less than 1700 career hits and maybe 1100 or so career rbi's.he walked a lot, struck out,,hit 580 something hrs big deal...

Mark was on the gas at U$C. 8)

he was one of the original bash brothers, that should get him an automatic pass.. ;D
-
At some point time he will specify his actual playing years when he was using steriods.
After which those statistics should be wiped away forever. Like it never happended.
The late 90's and early 2000's were an absolute joke in baseball. EVERYBODY was using the gas, even the batboys.
Compare the home run numbers by MLB in that span compared to the last 5 years. It's not even close.
-
Or the bottle of Andro in his locker. ::)
That bottle of Andro started this whole fucking thing
-
I can't believe he is going to get away with lying to Congress. That's pretty fucked up.
Who are you talking about, Clemens or McGwire? McGwire never lied to congress.
-
mark m was definely juicing , and not only because of canseco, his little brother was a bodybuilder and got him started. his two bigger brothers were both failures one in football and the other basketball. his stats were 1317 walks 36th all time, 1626 hits , 583 homers 8th=led league 4 times.,1414 rbi's 66th, 1167 runs scored192nd, 263 avg, 394 obp 78th, 588 slg pct 9th, ab per hr 10.6 1 st all time. votes pct in 2010 23.7 percent required pct 75 pct. chances geyying into hof not bloody likely. was on cover of md proves he was juicing.
-
I hate how they all make these qualifying statements when they admit it, blah blah I took steroids "on and off" for 10 years. Just say you took steroids between these dates. I have a lot more respect for someone who just fesses up without trying to soften things up.
-
Yawn. In other news, Mark McGuire admited today that the sky is blue. ::)
Exactly. Is this a surprise to anyone? Say what you want though, his "I'm not here to talk about the past" line is classic. ;D
How fitting.....on the cover of MD.

heard larussa was actually considering utilizing him as a pinch hitter this season, which would delay his HOF nomination date 5 years and thus allow more to surface about steroid era, making his gear use more acceptable
-
He's a hell of a long ways from the hall at the moment (had like 26% of the vote, I think you need 67 or 75% or something like that). I don't think he'll ever make it.
-
Since he will be the Cardinals hitting coach this season I think it was encouraged for him to just admit it or he would be hounded about it all season. LaRussa also said that he would toy around with the idea of making him active for the playoffs if they make it. Probably kidding but you never know.
Won't happen. To old and there's no DH in the National league.
-
If a juiced Clemens is pitching to a juiced McGwire, Rodriguez, and Palmiero, who has the advantage?
I've said that since the beginning...... they cancel each other out

I would argue that it extended their career lengths, especially Clemens. God knows he should have been done when Boston passed on him and Toronto signed him...and then he's pitching like he did 10 years previously and, voila, two more Cy Youngs.
-
what steroid was it.....

the year him and sosa were going after each other was probably the most ridiculous thing i've seen in sports my entire life. imagine just a year before that (and since) people with HALF the home runs they were hitting were all stars.
every game day almost one of them hit a home run. baseball must've cashed in hard that year.

Groundbreaking.

Juan Gonzalez was juicing also. 8)

go back and to the year the all-star game was in seatle and how jacked jason giambi was and how long some of his home runs in the home run derby traveled
-
sounds like he is blaming his drug usage on the "steroid era".
I think sports should allow steroids for players repairing an inujury. Have them not play for a while until they are better. This way players can still use and the organizations drop the testing and ignore the whole issue.

honestly...I have to laugh at the grown men sitting around there televisions sets every Sat and Sun afternoon living vicariously through athletes. If they were watching pop and rock stars instead, society would be agahst. Because it is sports somehow it is OK to do.
Imagine your father and brothers sitting around all weekend cheering for Metallica.

giambis mantra was party like a rock star, live like a movie star, fuk like a porn star,,as a yankees fan i liked his team attitude and cool guy demeanor, but in 2002 he hit a ball in toronto that hit under the second deck wall under the deck and bounced back on the field, guy loved the contract ,notoriety,juice...

No surprise there. He's just admitting what we (and he) knew all along anyway. Too bad he had to be so f'n fake for the past 10 years.

in his defense, he wasn't on the gas when he hit 49 in 86 which was his rookie year.
I think he was. I believe his own brother claimed he used steroids while at USC.

As to the dialect, well...

They just showed an interview of McGwire blubbering like a little bitch about his steroid use. I mean he was close to crying. LOL. What a big fucking pussy. I mean these sports stars are grown children.
-
What qualifies Mark McGwire to be the St. Louis Cardinals' batting/hitting coach????
The guy has a lifetime career .263 average. He's always hit for power and never for average.
He's only hit over .300 one time in his career where he played at least 100 games in a season.
Not exactly stellar.....
-
Didn't McGwire and company call Jose Canseco a liar when he named them all as users? Jose Canseco has the last laugh. :(
Sports blog Deadspin is reporting today that Mark McGwire's younger brother, Jay McGwire, is circulating a book to New York publishers titled, "The McGwire Family Secret: The Truth about Steroids, A Slugger and Ultimate Redemption." :D

THERE have been many ex pitcher/hitters who had less then stellar career numbers and became great coaches, marks hr totals are the exception,,,in his case,he needs to teach fundamental approach and correct flaws in a swing or stance, maybe he has a keen eye for that ,and personally it didn't translate for him hitting for better overall avg.

I think it has more to do with Larussa throwing him a bone. He may have money problems and needs the dough.

Bay Area family who lost son to steroids: McGwire can help more
VACAVILLE — Vacaville residents Frank and Brenda Marrero were there in March 2005, when a red-faced Mark McGwire told a congressional panel he didn't want to "talk about the past." Now that McGwire finally admitted he used steroids during his Major League Baseball career, Frank Marrero — whose 19-year-old son, Efrain, committed suicide three weeks after stopping steroids cold turkey — said McGwire needs to do more.
"We knew he had used steroids and we were there in Washington where it was evident he felt guilty and didn't want to say it," Marrero said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "It's good that he did come forward and admit it, but he needs to go further and join forces with foundations like ours to warn young people a the dangers of steroid use." The Marreros formed the nonprofit Efrain Anthony Marrero Foundation in memory of their son, who took his life in September 2004. He left no explanation and had no history of depression. It was only after his death that the Marreros learned that quitting steroids outright — as they demanded when they found Efrain was using them — can lead to depression and suicide.
Their foundation is dedicated to sharing such information with youths and parents in the hopes of saving them from "the devastation of steroids." "We all make mistakes," Frank Marrero said. "But we can correct it, and Mark could help bring that message." Also at the 2005 hearing were the parents of another Bay Area family with a similar tragic story: Raymond and Denise Garibaldi.
Their son Rob, a former star high school outfielder in Petaluma who went on to play at USC, told them he took steriods to emulate stars like Barry Bonds and McGwire.
He shot himself to death in October 2002.
In his interview with The Associated Press on Monday, McGwire made note of the March 2005 hearing and the families, like the Marreros, who sat directly behind him as he declined to comment on his use of steroids.
"That was the worst 48 hours of my life, going through that, but I had to listen to the advice of my attorneys," he said. "To repeat that 'I don't want to talk about the past' and then to have the family members, Don Hooton (of Texas) and his family — the other families sat there, and every time I'd say, 'I'm not going to talk about the past,' I'd hear moanings back there. It was absolutely ripping my heart out." Marrero, whose family story made national news, including coverage in the New York Times, said hearing those comments offered some comfort.
"When we were there, as a family, we were still in such tremendous pain," he recalled. "When he would say he didn't want to talk about it, it was disappointing and painful. So to know that he recognized that and that we've been on his mind, is good to know." Donald Hooton, whose son also committed suicide after using steroids, was among those McGwire called Monday to discuss his admission "I do think he can make a good spokesman on this topic," Hooton said. "Who better to describe what it's like to go to the mountain top and now to be at the depths of the deepest valley for a mistake you made several years ago?" Marrero agreed.
"We are a forgiving nation and family. We don't want to crucify anybody but just get the information out to our children, to keep this from happening to others," he said. "Efrain didn't have that chance." Asked what he would say to McGwire if he had the chance, Marrero's comments were more pointed.
"I would just say that our son looked up to you. You are part of the reason why he used steroids," he said. "There is no way you could have known that. But you were a role model and because you used steroids, he did and he lost his life.
"Now we need to work together to alert people, to do the best we can to prevent this from happening to anyone else."
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
