why has there never been a black worlds strongest man?
no racist, just asking. are the nordic/eastern bloc men just the strongest on the planet?
-
For some reason, strongman training has never really caught on with the black folk. I can only think of 2 black guys that have competed at the top(John Gamble, O.D. Wilson). Also strongman is a small and somewhat expensive sport, I doubt many urban youth get exposed to it, it isn't like powerlifting or bodybuilding where a kid can just pop into a gym and learn.
As to why some Europeans and Nordic types do better strongman than others is Popularity. Those countries have a strong bias toward sports that transfer over to strongman better than others, and strongman is actually a respected sport, not just a ESPN oddity, so you can draw from a bigger pool of atheles.
-
Mark Felix used to (maybe still does?) compete in WSM. He is quite the beast, pretty sure he's never cracked the top three though.
I love this shit when it's on ESPN, one of my favorite things to watch.

LOL. Just another typical day gardening.

I'd say so. Just as black men dominate sprinting events [no racist].
PS - racist post reported. ;D

Anyone remember Grizzly Brown who competed in WSM 85 and 86? He was a terrible strongman who Kaz called a clown and an insult to American strongmen (the was during the time Kaz was banned).
I was a member on an Ezboard strongman website back in 2002 and Grizzly joined and all the members were patronising and sycophantic towards him calling him the "great grizzly" etc. Jimmy Thomson was also a member and posted that he would be in California and would visit Grizzly and give him training advice. The other members were horrified and appologised to Grizzly on behalf of Jimmy, saying that Jimmy obviously didn't realise who he was talking to and he was a senile old man etc.
Jimmy replied that he knew exactly who Grizzly was and that he remembered him as the fat joke who placed last in WSM 85 and 86 and that he could do with some help. Grizzly died of heart failure the next day. Jimmy wasn't real popular after that.

Is there much money in Strongman events or is it like bodybuilding prize wise i.e. a plastic trophy, protein bar and a handful of loose change?

I have seen an interview (cannot remember the name) he was the CEO from the world strongest man or so.
He was raging on how unbelievable succesful this would be if the companies would see how open this sport is to advertisment, he said look at the masses of people here watching this strongman event - and the camera swung around and there were hardly 100 people there all tourists.
I love watching them but you have to be a realist and see that compared to baseball tennis soccer even snooker this will probably never really hit big time - unfortunatly - and I think I know why, back inthe days when the circus were going from town to town they always had some freak show on (you know kid with no arms lizard lady and so forth) the strongman were not considered freaks but they weren't far of, and thats the same today.

Powerful!

How about Magnus Hoberl?
The guy used to dabble in bodybuilding for awhile

Hey Dr Funk MD - you think lifting a 400lb stone might increase his blood pressure??? Way to pass judgement on a guys health from one pic.
But of course, you could lift that weight without turning a little red!

i'm not disrespecting oaf i'm just gennunily concerned for the guys health, and curious to what his blood pressure is i've deadlifted 565 i know it's nothing like lifting a 400 lb awkward stone. how many guys doing strongman i've heard of 1 or 2 dropping dead after there events.
-
is that blood?
-
More awesome. :o
-
is that blood?
On Derek's hands and arms? That is the sticky stuff some strongmen use instead of chalk. One guy on the WSM competition that just aired on espn had duct tape on both forearms.
