Title: Best place to live in the US.. opinions please
Post by: Brixtonbulldog on January 19, 2010, 09:19:44 PM
Every day the area I live seems to get worse.  Traffic gets worse, crime is rampant, urbanization is cancerous, politicians dessimate an otherwise pristine environment and it seems like there are more and more trashy, nasty people polluting an area that wasn't nearly as bad ten years ago.

In a few years I'll be making enough to move wherever I would like in the US.  With the idea of getting married, starting a family, and making a successfull career in mind I find myself increasingly frustrated with this place.  I've travelled a lot and a lot of areas around my country seem to be falling victim to the same plight as here while other places seem to maintain their beauty and remain a pleasant, civil community.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?  When you think of places you've been where exactly appeals to you and why?  I need options people and since a drastic population reduction doesn't seem to be in the cards for Baltimore suburbs I'd love to hear one of you bastards brag about how awesome it is to live somewhere other than here so I can dream.

Orange Co, Ca

Beach cities.

I've lived in san diego, LA, orange county... many "beach" towns, and I've learned to stay away from places that harbor the types that ride bicycles everywhere. nothing screams minority infestation like bicycles.  you gotta know where to live... like la jolla and not OB, but still... ughh.. disgusting hippies riding bikes, constantly barefoot, talking about "surfing is like my religion man!"

beautiful places, but they attract horrible people

Washington DC or the Suburbs of Washington DC!

You get the city experience but still having lots of open space and not having it all be narrow and tight like NYC!

I've lived up and down the west coast of California a hell of a long time. Each city/town has its own reason to like it, but each has been expensive if you want a nice home near the beach. I've lived near the beach in San Francisco (the Sunset), a block from the ocean in Santa Cruz, a half block to the beach in Santa Barbara, directly over one of Laguna Beaches finest surfing spots,  up the hill from the beach in San Clamente, and finally a half block from what many people consider to the the finest beach in the world (I don't agree) - Waikiki Beach. I've probably been on that beach more than any other presently living individual. And that includes the Duke!

I tend to lose my sense of direction when I am more than a couple of miles from the ocean.

I've never lived more than a couple of blocks from the ocean or a major river, but for family reasons I now find myself in a desert (Las Vegas) and I'm enjoying it a lot because it has been a major change with an unlimited number of things to do and the have an artificial wave pool at the Mandalay Bay which is relaxing during the summer months.

If you can afford it, get a home on a cliff overlooking the Pacific with a beach below. It's the most peaceful feeling in the world to wake up to that view and the sound of the incoming waves. These homes are expensive but readily available in the South Laguna Beach Area

Looking back, I'd say that the best places to live are located in Southern California ... either Laguna Beach or Malibu with more emphasis on Laguna Beach.

But both are expensive so I don't advise any beach town/city without a heavy wallet.

The great northwest, I live north of Seattle, beautiful scenery even more beautiful women..very laid back, and the shitty weather in the winter plus high cost of living keeps the slums and minorities at a minimum...I'm from the deep south (Louisiana) originally and have lived all over the us, minus the upper Midwest, and was shocked that the supposed ghettos up here would pass as middle class where I'm from...it's an awesome place and the summers are the best

I moved from London to Dallas in 2003 and will never move back. I love it here in Texas because of the open space, the weather, the women are smoking hot and it is a great standard of living.

If you want to leave what you have in London, avoid NYC, its the same just less polite.

If you can afford it, Saulsalito (Marin County) CA is pretty close to perfection.  From there you are close to all the benefits of a city (San Francisco) without any of the city headaches.  Once you cross the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco, you are in Marin County.  Beautiful homes, sweeping views, close to Napa and Sonoma wine country.  Mild weather year round.  I'd live there! :D

Great jobs in San Francisco and Silicon Valley (health care, finance, technology, education, etc.)

Yes, this area is very live and let live; if your life is dominated by religion, racism, sexism, and other filters then, no, you would not be happy here... because you would quickly realize that you are the one who doesn't fit in. If you pride yourself on being "conservative" then that is a legitimate reason not to live here because you would likely be unhappy.  Then again, the last person here who claimed he wanted to leave the Bay Area because he was a “conservative” with “morals” also bragged (in another thread) that he was a deadbeat who racked up debt with creditors and had no intention of paying his debts. http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=193870.msg4453019#msg4453019

Perhaps you and Methyl Mike would get along…?  Just don’t loan him any money.  ::)

btw, compared to peer cities and counties, SF and Marin are also relatively crime free. :)

I also lived in Marin County for a couple of years. Great Northern California area and within a matter of 4 hours from Lake Tahoe and all the great ski resorts there.

I also spent a lot of time in Sausalito but you have t be very wealthy to live there for any length of time.

If you can afford it, buy one of those huge homes that has the San Francisco Bay in the back yard and do a lot of entertaining.

I can definitely say that it has gone down hill.  The Baltimore/DC corridor was always bad but now even moreso.  Everything is a strip mall.  A few years back they destroyed a few thousand acres of forest near my hood to put in the largest mall on the east coast and all the shopping centers and apartments that came with it.  Now slots will be going in.  Combine that with BRAC bringing an additional 10,000-15,000 personnel to Fort Meade and BOOM.. we've gone off the chart.  It really looks like Norfolk/Hampton area Virginia now and I couldn't stand it when I was stationed there.

Either way.. time to go.

Hey, bay! Thanks for posting that San Francisco beach photo. I lived many years ago in the background (on the southern side of GG Park) in the Sunset neighborhood on 36th avenue (the Boulevard) and hit that beach just about every weekend ... fog or shine - didn't make any difference. Right below that picture spot is where surfing started in Northern California.... right below the Cliff House and near Seal Rocks.

And that large row of condo townhouses in that photo was where the old Playland at the Beach was located. It was a great place for kids from all over the Bay Area back then.

That photo brought back some damn fine memories.

I'll try to find a photo I took of that area during a recent visit. You just might recognize what it is.

all but Ellicott City
Howard Co, MD, where EC is, is I believe the richest county in America, displacing Montgomery Co,MD (where Bethesda, Germantown, Kensington Silvet Spring is. The second richest Co in the US is one in  Jersey I believe. Gibson Island MD is where Colin Powell has a house there, Ive never been, but from what I've been told (by someone who follows this shit), it's zip code is one above Beverly Hills.

I've lived in Germantown, MD, worked in Ellicott City, and have lived and was born and raised in Annapolis. So I'm used to snooty, snobby people and at the same time people who sound like Punjabi MC or someone from Africa. In Bethesda I could go to a Brazilian steakhouse, in Germantown and Silver Spring I could get Ethiopian food. But in Germantown I saw more Diplomat cars than I have in my life, and they can't drive worth a shit. But Montgomery Co is overpriced, for us who can't afford it.

Boston is a great place to live. It's filled with professionals and students. Metro Boston is very clean and very safe. You can walk from one end of the city to the other and never have to go through a bad area, since all the bad areas are outside of the metro area. Great restaurants, lots of history, nice parks, beautiful architecture and a good nightlife...it's on the ocean and there is lots to do. You're very close to hundreds of miles of beaches and about 2 hours south of ski mountains like Killington, Loon and Jay Peak. Lastly, you can count on four seasons (three of which are very desirable to experience).

There are some drawbacks, though. If you don't like snow or cold, this could be a deal breaker. Boston has tough winters, but if you like winter sports and the whole "Christmas feel" you will enjoy winter time in Boston. Also, Boston is very expensive. However, there are several cities just outside Boston where you can find housing for a more reasonable cost. That said, even those cities are expensive compared to most places in the US. Lastly, if you can't handle a fast pace lifestyle and traffic, don't move here.

I just recently moved from Los Angeles to Vermont.
Talk about major change! 3.8 million ( in LA alone ) vs 623,050 for the whole state!
I enjoyed my time in LA, but in my opinion it's entirely too overcrowded.
Still all in all it was great experience, made some cool friends and had a blast.

You’re kidding right?  The OP is looking for “the good life.”  Unless you enjoy wearing long-johns and gloves, that is definitely not Boston.  Winters there are long, harsh, and ugly (true for all of New England). And summers in Boston are humid and yucky.  Yes, it’s a great place to get an education, but Boston and the surrounding area is insular, horribly segregated, and still classist.  See more about that here http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=102286.0

I suppose it depends on your lifestyle, but to me the good life is Mediterranean climate year round with wide open fields and the beach less than one mile away.  As for Boston being “on the ocean” one does not see people in Boston snorkeling, surfing, or kite surfing very much.

Mike Arvilla is from up thataway... I don't think he would be quick to tout it as an ideal place to live. :-[

Have you spent much time in Marin, Napa or Sonoma counties?  Notice I did not say SF (which does get cold).  The three counties north of the Golden Gate bridge are Mediterranean virtually year round.  Remember, we are talking California wine country.  If the weather were less than perfect there… the grapes would not grow… but they do—year round... and a billion dollar industry is based on that fact.

I went on a skiing holiday to Killington and Vermont seemed like a really nice, chilled out place to live. I don't know what the summers are like there, but it's definitely on the list of places I would like to live if I ever left the UK.

Yes, it is!  This area has what are known as "microclimates."*  Within just a few miles (sometimes one mile) you can have very different weather.  By the way, although I love it here, I acknowledge that there are other great places to live:  there is a reason why people dream of living in the Keys, Santa Barbara or Hawaii.  No one “dreams” of living in Boston.  Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and parts of San Diego are also nice—if you can afford them.  But as has been said,

i want to move back to california, preferably orange county or north san diego county...

also, anywhere in california is soooo expensive i don't even know if i could afford it...

If you don't have your act together in terms of career and $$ your quality of life will suck.

Again, lifestyle has a lot to do with it.  For many people a Mediterranean climate is a big part of “the good life.”  Obviously, if you’d rather go ice fishing, Alaska would be a better destination.

*Microclimates

San Francisco is a city with microclimates and submicroclimates. Due to the city's varied topography and influence from the prevailing summer marine layer, weather conditions can vary by as much as ten degrees Fahrenheit from block to block.

The region as a whole, known as the Bay Area can have a wide range of extremes in temperature. In the basins and valleys adjoining the coast, climate is subject to wide variations within short distances as a result of the influence of topography on the circulation of marine air. The San Francisco Bay area offers many varieties of climate within a few miles. In the Bay area, for example, the average maximum temperature in July is about 64 °F (18 °C) at Half Moon Bay on the coast, 87 °F (31 °C) at Walnut Creek only 25 miles (40 km) inland, and 95 °F (35 °C) at Tracy, just 50 miles (80 km) inland.

If you have more than 2 brain cells to rub together and have a college degree stay away from Las Vegas.  I have a BS degree.

  Here are my top choices:

If you have any ambitions in life to pursue professional work here are the top cities...

New York and Boston have more "professional opportunities" than all those cities. Not bagging on your choices, but to not list northeast cities when referring to "professional work" makes me question your experience.

Well, actually the great thing about the Panhandle in Florida is filled with the top ten Deadliest sharks in the world!! That is why i chose to move down here. There is warm water but the farther you go out it gets colder and have seen a couple of Whites while fishing but no biggie. The only Sharks that i look out for is Bulls, Lemons, Hammerheads but i see them on a daily basis. There was a 8 Foot Hammerhead that was swimming right where i swim, all the time but the beaches were closed down until it left. Florida leads the world in Shark Attacks and that was a big choice as to my reasoning to come do the Sunshine State. Hawaii is nice but there has been Great Whites there and that is mostly Tiger Shark land.

So, let me get this straight, you moved down to that area in Florida because it leads the world I. shark attacks? Hmmm.

I've only seen. Few sharks up close in the wild, one was a small shortfin Mako that was caught by a guy on the Outer Banks (nice place). Another was a dogfish, same place. I've heard that there are Great Whites off the coast of Cape Hatteras.

You moved to Florida for the sharks? Haha, well, at least it's a more interesting reason than the usual family, work or a boy/girlfriend reason.

Yes sir. I love MICHIGAN but i knew that i would either end up in Florida or California!! Mako's are really quick and hard to handle when you bring them up on the boat but their Speed is uncanny to none. Great Whites are rare in Florida but i had a buddy that caught one off the beach...  :o :o Dude has his picture where he pulled it up on the beach but it was only a Baby...11 Feet or a little more...I see Sharks as Beautiful and my friends/MOM sees me as a nut.

I go to the beach on a daily basis and it helps living off of Anna Marie Island!! They are not that bad and if you leave them alone, you barely even notice them. Getting bitten is not a big deal but dealing with all of the Bacteria that they have in their mouth irritates me. Even when it is raining, i will be at the beach.  ;)

San Francisco?  LMAO!  That place is a major shithole unless you can afford to live in the nice areas.  I've lived in four different states in 4 different areas of the country:

Northwest = Oregon
West Coast = Southern Ca.
Midwest = St. Louis
Rocky Mountain Region = Denver/Boulder/Colorado Springs

By far the best place out of those for me was Colorado.  Denver is a kick ass city with affordable suburbs.  You're two hours from the best skiing and recreation in the world.  Downtown Denver is a lot of fun with three major sports teams and their stadiums/arenas all within walking distance.  Lots of nice affordable houses.  Jobs?  Still a big city so there will always be jobs.

I'd have to say number two would definitely be the northwest.  I love OR.  It's a beautiful state that is still very affordable but the economy there is complete shit right now.  St. Louis was where I was born and raised.  It's great city with a lot to offer and a great place to raise a family.  Fairly conservative.  Lots of blacks and used to be the most dangerous city in the country at one time.  Lots of hillbillys out in the small towns and rural areas as well.

I'm currently living in Souther California.  It's a great place to live if you have a solid job and are single.  Lots of hot high maintenance bitches to fuck around with.  But it's definitely not a place I'd want to be forever.  Way too many people are just out of touch here and overall it's a VERY self absorbed culture.

My mother is from the south, and where she is from they kill snakes on site, regardless if they are good or bad, just shoot em, just because the are snakes. When I was young I tried to stop this practice and they looked me like I had 3 heads.

Earl exactly why I don't have snakes. Or birds, as youngster they used to call me "The Audubon Society" because I was into birds, snakes and sharks. They are cool as fuck to me, but every woman I know hates them. So I can appreciate Doug's enthusiasm for Sharks, I used to have a huge shark book as child, and I real good at drawing their profiles, while the spiricles and knowing what their denticles look like, especially on their teeth.

That is what my mom does when she sees a snake.  :( I have always told her, "Just, let him or her go on their way." I used to live in some country places, (S.C) and we always saw Copperheads and they were killed on site.  :( I remember doing yard work and i would pick up any kind, just pick it up and take him or her and put them back in the woods. Snakes do feel kinda weird though... :o I do enjoy watching them at the Zoo and do find snakes interesting.  ;)

Yeah, nothing says "pervert" to members of the opposite sex like a houseful of snakes (and/or owing a pair of leather trousers).

Have you seen any of viperkeeper's videos on youtube? He makes awesome videos and has got a massive collection of venomous snakes:

yes bad drug problems there.  But I guess in most places.    There are houses within 1/2 mile of each of those photos except maybe the black sand beach one. The one is in Lanikai at my friends house.  The homes located in the mountains and high hills are absolutely beautiful.  Many 5+ million dollar homes 5+ miles from the ocean.  Some junky places too in Hawaii but I guess if you are going to live in a dumpy area Hawaii is the prettiest.

Everything from all over the World is here. This City is in America. But there isn't a more international City on Earth. No matter what you want? You can get it here. It's a simple city to navigate. It's the Food Capitol of the World. There's said to be 5-1 Women to Men. Everything about it keeps you on your toes. You gotta be otherwise you'll get chewed up and spat out. For me besides Paris. It's the greatest City to walk around in. The taxes are high. But the salary is high as well. Three convinient airports. Three brand new stadiums. There's said to be 5-1 Women to Men. It's the City that never sleeps.
born raised and live in nyc 41 years  .....no way its 5-1 women to men not even close , but still the greatest city in the world

what about Maui or Kauai? my girlfriend is always on my case to move to the islands...

They are all pretty bad with drugs and the locals.  Got to remember you are on an island and you are limited to things to do.  Not like on the mainland or other places where you can jump in a car and go somewhere and experience something different in both scenic aspects and culturally.  Drugs I guess give you that "out".  I never got into them so I can't tell you.  But I can see where that can happen.  I was lucky cause I never got "island fever" and if I did get bored I would jump on a plane and either go to another island or the mainland.  Kauai I went to often.  It is very beautiful there.  Waimea Canyon is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.  The wettest place on earth is there.  It is very green and a great place to visit.  But I could never live there.  Very boring at night and just not alot of people.  Maui is is always the place people say they love the most.  I have been there maybe 30 or so times.  The hotels there are unreal.  The golf is awesome and so are the waves.  Alot to do on Maui and it seems pretty big especially compared to Kauai.  I have decided to spend my winters in Hawaii and summers in Vegas and go to Hawaii a couple times during the summer.  I will have Vegas as my main home.  I really like Vegas and it is alot of fun here but I really miss Hawaii, its people, my friends and really the laid-back life in luxury.  I will also spend my time on Oahu.  Oahu is not for everyone.  It is basically a Los Angeles surrounded by water.  But I like people around me.  There are a millions things to do on Oahu.  Plus I know so many people there.

Yes on both counts.  I can handle all the orientals though.  I get a little pissed at the filipinos and how stupid they are when it comes to handling an order you give them (at a restaurant).  They are not the brightest group there (and I am filipino).  The druggies I have no problem with cause they stay away from me.  They ruin downtown and the surrounding areas (publicly).  At least in most of the areas outside of that they are.r in their homes getting fucked up except for a few spots like Waianae.  But, all major places have that problem.  I grew up in LA and they were everywhere but I always lived and hung out in the areas where at least the neighborhoods were kept nice and clean.  I just hate it when they make everything so dirty and filthy.  These are some photos taken by an old friend who is or was a pretty popular photographer.  The last one I was there and in fact she was one of our models.

My list was simple. Big city, sub-tropical, surf beaches, good climate, mountains and nice scenery and non-religious. In the US that would be Honolulu, LA, San Diego, Miami, and maybe a couple of other cities in Florida. Texas, Arizona and New Mexico don't have the beaches but might be next on the list. Sydney, Australia has everything you could want. 4.5 million people, beaches galore, no snow and great women.

A question to Keith. Did you see Ledward Kapana play slack key in Hawaii? I would love to see those musicians. Hawaii is probably, all round, the best place on earth to live if you don't want to have cold seasons.
