people have priorities, just make sure you laugh in her face when the German POS falls apart and she ends up having to sell her left kidney to get the transmission replaced.

They usually are reliable but mostly electronics and glitches of some sort are the problems. If you plan on keeping for a long time I advise extended warranty.

The 335is are awesome, but have numerous High Pressure Fuel Pump failures because of the turbo motor, which is yet to be fixed. They are coming out with a new motor this spring of 2010. The N55 which uses a single turbo instead of twin, hopefully it's fixed by then.

Also a new 335IS is expected with new 7 speed double clutch trans, and more power, something like 335HP and 342 torque??

Tell us more, specifically 07, 08 3 series coupe's..

328,335 coupes are solid cars, when u start adding bluetooth, sat radios, and other bigger options they may cause some problems,it could be a 2 day repair or a 1 month repair depending on parts available or if its back ordered from germany..the main issue with twin turbo is the pump, injectors and hi  and low pressure sensors,is like going to the doctor for a cold easy 1 day lay up,,3 series are also suspect to valve tapping 07 and up it was being replaced with cylinder heads but bmw was going through those like some people go thru condoms,so now we replace with lifters 1st cheaper and that seems to be the real problem.any vehicle laid up 2 or months customers get payments credited on lease and i have seen customers get back thousands to shut up and then get a by back and new model same deal as other car they had.3 problems related to same repair  within 3 months to yr is a possible lemon law by back.all cars or trucks being treated with lifters problems are x5,x3.3.5.series,pressure pumps 535,335,inj,lo pressure sensors.m5.m6 don't see enough but m5 have some gear and vanos issues,m6 like 6 series have a trunk water issue occasionally..again bmw great car handling 1st class, engine power great ,durability good, issues are always taken care of 50,ooo or 100,000 extended warranty thats great,,and bmw honors all past and present recalls, updated parts to be replaced regardless of yr or mileage as long as that recall applies to that model.

No, personally I like Porsche, but for someone who's obviously weighing the pros and cons of a used 3 series, with financial factors for maintenance an obvious major consideration HE should just got a Lexus.  You may feel BMW is more prestigious, I dont, others dont necessarily, there is nothing prestigious about any car that can be bought used with a warranty for 20k, so make the decision for more practical reasons, like maintenance costs and resale value.

depending on mileage and yr a bmw holds value,,a used 3 series 07 say with 20,ooo or 30,000 will still hold, cost around high twenties to low thirties,,with 1 to 2 yrs left on warranty and then the 100,00o mileage kicks in and if u have maint to 100,000 u get at leat 2/3 more yrs from the original warranty expiring,,then u decide go to an independent station and pay 75 to 100per hr or a dealer and u get 115 to 125 per hr is it high yes but how do think thay stay in buissness at this point it isn't with selling ,,service is the bread and butter.

Im not saying there arent ways to do it, just that it could bite u in the ass.  Personally Id buy a new one and drive it to 50k so youre 100% covered or but a 30k and drive it to 100k, I like to be under warranty, but either way you're likely to be negative at the end of either situation..

BMW is like all german european cars, very nice to drive, but if you are keeping it for the long run, always buy the extended warranty. Otherwise I suggest go japanese, lexus, infiniti, acura, all good cars.

IMO, any car can run forever, it's how much you are willing to put into them, and euro/german cars require a lot more maintianance than your average japanese or american car. They can be reliable, but are very problematic when they get old, more so than other brands. Like others have said, not much with the motor or transmission, just the little stuff, fuel pump, water pump, suspension components, electrical, etc... It can be a headache and quite pricey.

test drove both the lexus and the BMW.

hands down the BMW feels like a better car.

much more horsepower and torque than the lexus. much more room as well.

also much more physically appealing than the lexus.

TacoBell, what BMW did you own, beat the shit out of and expect it to hold up, and then purchase a Lexus and realized that you took care of it and it was the best car you ever had?

You have an obvious bias against BMW's, and since I own a 540, I can say that if you take care of it, it will last a long long time with zero to minimal issues. My buddy has a 745, and while it had little issues here and there (03, they were still working out the iDrive...no microsoft!) it's also been a great car for him. Both of us drive all over hell and back. I've put nearly 30k on my car this year alone (well, in 09). But my car has run perfectly.

Wow youre either psychic, or just plain wrong.   ::)
Capt.EQ was asking questions which indicated that financial/maintenance concerns would factor into his decision.  Its not even BMW specific, its German cars, BMW was just the question in hand.  Therefore, I'd recommend a Lexus, my opinion.  I owned a 5 series and liked it a lot, minimal probs but still pricey and a headache to deal with.  As I alluded to I currently drive a Porsche Cayenne which I love, but again financially German cars are not ideal.  I havent had any problems with my car but even the 60k tune up was almost 2 grand.

Looks like a 335i, probably 08 because the 09 and up have the black trim on the windows instead of the chrome. Most likely the sport package, with aftermarket CSL rims.

MSRP new probably 50K or so.

Basically my situation is: I want to buy a sport upscale car in the spring..I have a nice suv, Buick Enclave which I love and enjoy, and I'm going to keep it for the fiancee to use and for winters, but I miss my sporty cars, before the suv all my cars were stick and sporty..

So, now I'm at a point where I want to buy a 2-3 year old sporty luxury car, the cars I have been looking at were the 3 series BMW, Mercedes CLK or SLK, infiniti G37 and so on, I want to spend up to $40,000 on 2-4 year old car, I am looking for 2 door coupe, standard transmission, sunroof (I hate convertibles) and good value for the money, and obviously something that's not gonna kill me at the mechanic...not a huge fan of Lexus ( I think they are the most technologically superior brand but lack look and design that Mercedes and BMW have in spades) also not a huge fan of Audi, I think they are vastly overrated..

if anyone has any constructive suggestions or ideas, please help and contribute :)

thanks.

also this is a car I will be driving most of the year since my wife will take the suv I'm driving now.

thanks in advance.

+1 on the electrical issues.  I used to have a 325is that would have odd minor electric issues.  same thing with one of my brothers, he has one and similar issues with the electrical stuff.  besides that, they are great.

i drove the g37, and the lexus as posted above.

the g37 is a nitemare for drivers. fucking blindspots everywhere- if you live in TO you'll know the value of being able to see all around you unimpeded as the asians who you share the roads with are a fucking mess. the seats were too narrow for my back- especially the sport seat which has rigid sides that push into your back. if you want the sport package you have to get the seats. the BMW is as comfortable and roomy an interior than any car i have owned. the g37 has got 330hp but it all seems to be unusable top end- im pretty sure a 335i will take it out of the hole for sure. the BMW seems to have more torque thru all ranges as opposed to the infinity. inside the cabin the inifinity is a spaceship- very nice and appealing. alot of electrical gadgetry. everything is computerised and run thru a menu screen similar to the bmw idrive, but i think a little easier to operate.

imo there is no comparison between the 335i and the infinity. drive them both and you'll know what im talking about. even the 328i is a great car- 10k cheaper and 240 horse is plenty for the city- it also has torque in the right ranges but doesnt feel as 'tight' as the 335. the 335 is a rocket ship.. the 335i badge on the trunk looks nice and the exhaust sounds great but for commuting it seems to be a bit of overkill.

as far as styling i find one of the most attractive cars on the road still the bmw coupe. the only other car i would say has better lines is the mercedes CLS. thats a seriously sexy car, but at 100k plus maybe out of budget for alot of people.

drive them both. take the infinity out first so you can really appreciate the bmw when you drive it.

the maximum allowed speed in US is what? 80 mph? Every car with more than 100 bhp is overkill!
