Title: TV channel critical of Chavez is dropped.
Post by: Fury on January 24, 2010, 08:01:38 AM
Caracas, Venezuela (CNN) -- Venezuelan cable television providers dropped a channel Sunday that has been critical of President Hugo Chavez, citing violation of broadcast laws.

Radio Caracas Television, which lost its broadcasting license in 2007 and became a cable-only channel, disappeared shortly after midnight on Saturday.

RCTV was the only station that did not air the entire speech of Chavez during pro-government marches earlier on Saturday.

Diosdado Cabello, director of the national agency regulating electronic media, had called on cable and satellite providers to stop offering channels deemed to be in violation of law.

Cabello said RCTV did not broadcast the Venezuelan national anthem as required and failed to provide warnings before programs featuring violence.

The channel denied the violations in a news release Sunday. It said the move to drop it was illegal and questioned the National Commission of Telecommunications' authority to regulate subscription-based TV.

Four other channels were also taken off the air, according to the Venezuelan Chamber of Subscription Television. They were Ritmo Son, America TV, Momentum, American Network TV Chile.

Chavez has accused RCTV of violating broadcast laws and supporting a botched coup against him in 2002. Before it lost its license in 2007, it had been on air for 53 years and was one of several private broadcast stations that openly criticized the government.

Freedom of speech is alive and well in Venezuela.

Hey, it's a simple case of playing the wrong cards: Radio Caracas Televisión played an intricate part in the 2002 coup d'état attempt against Chavez and lost. Now they're paying the consequences.

I'm not saying they're right or wrong, just that they lost the power grab match.

It's important because this is true, hardcore socialism.

if a station here did what they did there, it would be called treason.

So you cry about the govt. taking away our freedoms in one thread and then justify Chavez doing it in another.  ::)

What I said is 100% true. You're on here nearly every day ranting and raving about how your rights are being taken away and then you're trumpeting Hugo's oppression of free speech.

I believe the word you're looking for is "hypocrite".  ;)

Hypothetical.  Lets say it's 2013 and Obama has lost the election to a republican. Let's now say there is a leftwing coup attempt in America.  Lets say the conspirators manage on shutting down the media with the exception of MSNBC who directly works with the conspirators.  The coup fails, what should happen to the conspirators which also include MSNBC?

Actually, that's not a hypothetical, it's what happened in Venezuela ;)

Hugo - we have our own Chavez according to famed investor Dick Bove:

Dick Bove Goes Glenn Beck: Compares Obama To Hugo Chavez And Warns Of A Huge Crash
Joe Weisenthal | Jan. 25, 2010, 8:35 AM | 1,420 |  11
www.businessinsider.com

The last time we turned on Glenn Beck he was comparing Barack Obama to Hugo Chavez in a manner that was both ridiculous and entertaining.

And now Rochdale Securities analyst Dick Bove is doing the same thing.

Take it away:

IS A MARKET CRASH LOOMING?
The United States financial system and its economy are at a critical juncture.  Actions being suggested in Washington have placed it on a precipice.  If the President and Congress continue down the path that each has indicated, in my judgment, the equity markets will crash.  Moreover, the financial system will have to be rebuilt on a new base.  Shareholders simply refuse to accept what is happening in Washington at the present time.

POLITICAL AGENDAS
Venezuelan Style Democracy

Hugo Chavez maintains himself in power as Venezuela’s President by following a simple path:
He constantly attacks the moneyed classes charging them with creating that nation’s problems.  In so doing he keeps the population in a constant state of anger over the fact that it must be made to suffer due to the actions of the rich and what were once the powerful.

President Chavez then acts to penalize the moneyed class by expropriating its wealth, and its businesses demanding that the masses be paid.  Mr. Chavez constantly attacks the right of the opposition to dissent.  He argues that these people must be quiet.

In the United States a similar style of Democracy is being crafted by its leaders:

It is being argued that the moneyed classes of Wall Street have created the financial crisis through greed and fraud.  The U.S. President stated this again last Friday.  Additionally, it is claimed that taxpayer money has been misused by the banks.

It is being suggested that the banks have caused the taxpayers to lose money on the TARP funds; that the big banks have not paid these monies back to the government; that the banks have taken from the government the money that was meant to save them, and then enriched themselves with these funds; that men and women in the financial system have reverted to the practices that caused the crisis in the first place.

The population is being driven to a constant state of rage at this corrupt moneyed class reflecting the anger of the President, himself.

Bills are being crafted that will prevent selected members of the moneyed classes from being enriched.  The targets are the wealthy moguls of “Wall Street.”  The target is also shareholders in financial companies who do not deserve dividends because they caused the financial crisis and have enriched themselves with taxpayer money.

Other bills are being created with the sole purpose of limiting the growth and profitability of the American banking system.

Further, the right to dissent is being vigorously attacked.  The evil doers in the moneyed class are being warned repeatedly not to participate in the democratic process; not to use their right of dissent.

They are being told they will be fought and they will be beaten.  These people have no right of expression in the new democracy being crafted by the nation’s leaders.

Hey Dick, tell us how you really feel!

I think I've mentioned several times that I don't think Chavez would be good for America.  It's equally stupidsilly to insist that Venezuela have a system and leader from the United States.

Because the current system and leader has worked out so well for them...hahaha!

Funny that he has a huge problem with oppression of free speech in America but then embraces the fact that Hugo is clamping down on it in Venezuela. The guy is a hypocrite.

Caracas, Venezeula. Murder capital of the WORLD in 2008. Although for 2009 it will probably be second to a Mexican city. Congrats on #2!

"What’s happening: The capital of Chávez country, Caracas has become far more dangerous in recent years than any South American city, even beating out the once notorious Bogotá. What’s worse, the city’s official homicide statistics likely fall short of the mark because they omit prison-related murders as well as deaths that the state never gets around to properly “categorizing.” The numbers also don’t count those who died while “resisting arrest,” suggesting that Caracas’s cops—already known for their brutality against student protesters—might be cooking the books. Many have pointed the finger at El Presidente, whose government has failed to tackle the country’s rising rates of violent crime. In fact, since Chávez took over in 1998, Venezuela’s official homicide rate has climbed 67 percent—mostly due to increased drug and gang violence. Ramón Rodríguez Chacín, who recently resigned as interior minister, claimed in July that homicide has dropped 27 percent since January—but experts say he’s just playing with numbers. As for Caracas, some speculate that its murder rate is closer to 160 per 100,000."

Oppression of free speech. Rampant corruption. Murder. Successful indeed! ::)
