I just tried out JNN-s tabata/burpee stuff and i have almost died. I didn't do any real cardio in the last one year, just weight lifting... this is the end result. My lungs hurt, i had to spit my drool after the 4 minutes, and after an hour i still feel a bit exhausted. Is burpee really such a mean exercise?
So guys, when was the lust time you tried some real intensive cardio? How it went?
-
not to bump my plight towards effective short cardio but i feel that the majority on this site buy into the " 45 minutes of walking on a treadmill at a low intensity" school
-
First time I sparred at grappling, I thought I had decent cardio, but OMG how fucking wrong I were lol.
-
SO you guys say its pretty normal that i felt so "shocked" afterwards?
I have to build some cardio stamina. That must have a positive effect on the weight lifting too.
JNN is this 4 minutes really burning fat?
-
I walked to the store today---damn near 3 blocks
-
JNN is this 4 minutes really burning fat?
if you've seen my pics, you can tell that the proof is in the pudding
do the research- Google "tabata Post EPOC" and you will get the answers
-
Thx, i will google it.
How many times a week do you do this? Iv'e read that you do 2 times a day. Every day, or just weekdays?
-
I try to maintain the ability to run three miles in 21 minutes without feeling like I want to die afterwards. As I get older I notice I enjoy lifting more and running less :)
-

tabata running in the AM on mon, weds, fri and saturday
tabata circuit (burpees/burpee variations, kettlebell stuff, cleans, snatch) after PM weight workouts which is 4 times a week so there will be days that i do the tabata protocol twice a day however this is not necessary- i'm just nuts
-

5 days week minimum hour long each session...and burpee's always suck.
-
Been sick and putting off cardio for the past couple months.. used to just do low intensity with some HIT from time to time.
TODAY I am going to do some Tabata after my workout. Pretty sure I'll be puking tonight... I have no cardio AND I'm a tiny tit, but at least I'm 300lbs with abs. 8)
-
you guys sound like beginners, no offense :-\ maybe tuffin up a bit
-
In all fairness, I've been tied down with more renos lately. Did some dry walling and painting. Standing around and pounding back mad water really does bring out epic leans!
-
Well, I do boxing so even when im out of shape im still fit compared to most people
At competition shape Im very fit, its difficult tho because boxing requires an insane amount of stamina

more like 30 minutes
sad thing is i'm not joking :D
-
I guess walking on treadmill can be healthy too. At least you move - better then sit at home. Just doesnt give you any stamina, and wont help your heart stay young...
-
I can jog for 20 minutes. Thats with 0 cardiovascular development.
When i was trained i could jog all day aslong as i had a mars bar and energy drink as i ran. The only thing to stop me would be needing to sleep.

cardio that will get you "shredded" should always be intense (of course, diet plays a huge part as well)
try this cardio workout on a off day
it is my new circuit called "the statue of david" workout
do this circuit only one time around
Body of David workout
Clean Squat Press x 30
Kettlebell swing x 30
Kettlebell Clean Press x15+15 (15 each arm)
Plyometric box jump x 30
Chirpee x 30
One Armed Barbell Power Snatch x 15+15 (15 each arm)
Dumbell Thruster x30
Medicine ball Jumping squat x 30
Tire Flip 200m's (back and forth hallway)
Burpee jump onto tire x 30 (see youtube clip below)

Burpees, lol. I haven't had to do them since early high school. Didn't rate them then and i still don't.
How fit am i? Not as fit as i should be, but getting there.
I've neither the desire nor the patience for X minutes of low intensity treadmill work, and besides while it might be good for fat burning, i'm sure we all agree it does very little for cardiovascular fitness.
In the gym i mix it up between interval training on a hill program on the treadmill or hill programs on a stepper. More than anything i prefer a good hike, it's then i see how unfit i am when i'm huffing and puffing up a mountain.
-
i am also a huge fan of this workout posted by Christian Thibideau in T-natiion recently
This one was a "favorite" of one of my hockey players who played in Europe. Back in 2001, he started the summer at 195lbs and 12% body fat, and ended the summer at 192 and 6% body fat; all without any particular attention to his diet.
A1. Power snatch from hang: 3 reps using around 70-75% of your maximum.
A2. Sprint 200m: (basically 100m, turnaround, 100m back to the starting point).
A3. Power clean: 3 reps with the same weight you used for the snatches.
He started at two sets, and by the end of summer was able to do 14. No, I'm not kidding; but he was also the freakiest overall athlete I've ever worked with. Besides him, the most anyone ever did was 8, with three minutes between sets.
If you're training indoors and can't do sprints, do burpees (15 reps) or sprint stair climbing (30 seconds).
-

It's brutal , I tryed it on the bike like Chris Aceto recomends.
Peddle at a steady pace for 2 mins then all out for 20 - 30 seconds then back to 2 mins then launch into it again and keep repeating like this..
It has you sucking for air like Swede sucks for sperm in a gay glory hole ;D
Ive found walking on the treadmill for 25 mins then 20 mins on a high incline to be effective for me at this time but if you stuck at the HIIT it would melt the fat off very quickly.
-
Walking is only good exercise if you are woefully out of shape.

I train in a sport called outrigging as well, only on the 1 man lately. I have done 2.5-3 hour paddles in outside rough waters but i generally keep the sessions intense and 60 minutes or less. I can always do the longer ones but they strip a lot of weight off me and it takes time to recover.
-
First time I sparred at grappling, I thought I had decent cardio, but OMG how fucking wrong I were lol.
I can run for an hour barefoot on a dry sand.
And run up and down to the 8th floor 14 times, less than 30 minutes. ;)

yep
i just subscribed to his vids on youtube (yesterday) and i can tell he totally is a subscriber of my view of cardio

He is also into this crossfit and kettleball thing. Thats what i call "fitness".. I'm thinking about visiting a crossfit training center since a while. Its just a bit expensive, because you need a PT at the beginning. But looks fun/healthy. One session is around 10 dollars if you does it in a small group, not just you and the PT, so thats a total 160 in a month. Gym membership is cheaper :D
-
I jump to conclusions. A lot. Does that count?
-
Of course. Your brain and your central nerval system uses the most energy!

You are 190cm at 91kg bw? ::) At that height you are still a twink... I am 180cm at 106kg and I can still play an entire 90min soccer game, or hit the bag for 3 min in a row with high intensity... not bad for a powerlifter... ;)

If you compare me to power lifter or bodybuilder I'm a small guy.
I'm a BJJ guy, I don't need to be big.
BTW: I'm 5/10 225.
Playing as a goal keeper that's easy. ::)

A lot of hard core guys here. I had no idea. I thought most were the do a half ass set and look at your watch so you can rest the full 2 minutes type. How do you find the time and energy to do such high intensity cardio in addition to weight training? And, more importantly, what keeps you motivated to want to be in such extraordinary shape? I can understand those that compete in a sport like GJJ but you don't need to push yourself like that just to have a way above average body. Weight training and diet will do that.
Weight training is nothing to me because muscle pain and burn is nothing compared to sucking wind. You guys make me feel like a lazy slob. But you've actually motivated me. I use to like doing sprints but my knees can't take it anymore. I use to run this sand hill in Manhattan Beach, Ca. It was perfect because it was soft sand and up hill. No pounding on the knees. And it really made me suck wind.
-

GJJ, what kind of cardio do you do for BJJ. For me the best was simply rolling until dead.

tabata running in the AM on mon, weds, fri and saturday
tabata circuit (burpees/burpee variations, kettlebell stuff, cleans, snatch) after PM weight workouts which is 4 times a week so there will be days that i do the tabata protocol twice a day however this is not necessary- i'm just nuts
So then you should have no problem with this......
Here's the gist of our advanced strongman camp. This is done in a circuit with no longer than 30sec between exercises and no more than 2mins between rounds. We do 4 rounds.
Foam rolling
Dynamic warm up w/active stretch - 15-20min
Single exercise - Box jumps on stacked tires (46") 3 x 5
Begin circuit;
Tire fights (700lb tire)
Sledgehammer lateral swings on tire 10x's each side
Tire flips (400lbs) 10 flips
Keg walk 40yards approx 150lbs
Truck push 1 ton truck -40 yards
Backwards sled drag w/3" dia rope 260lbs 40 yards
Farmers carries 75-100lbs - 40 yards
Backwards tire toss - 5 x's
2 min rest - repeat
immediately after 4 round is complete, 1 mile run for time
Approximately 12-1400 cal burned and continues burning for about the next 24 hours.
So.......that being said, there is NO easy way. Tabata is a great workout..for the short term to turn clients on and make then think your a "fitness" guru. But 4 mins a day ain't going to cut it. I'll take my 20-25min intervals. There is no replacement for hard work.
-
GJJ, what kind of cardio do you do for BJJ. For me the best was simply rolling until dead.
*Dry sand, *stairs, rolling and some of the stuff that JME posted.
* with weights.
By the way... new joke in Brazil, when you about to choke someone we start screaming " make the bond"
From Avatar.
Here's the scene he submit the animal using BJJ.
Fighting the animal and crossing the legs, was kind ok. choking someone from behind you shouldn't.

I swim during the summer. Right now a walk with the dogs makes me huff and puff, but in the summer I'll swim Butterfly non-stop for 30 minutes.
I eat clean most all of the time, or eat just enough to meet metabolic needs so I never look out of shape, but the cardio in the winter will make me dizzy enough to say "fuck this!"
I'm one of those guys who gets depleted and flat real quick with cardio.

I stole that pic from Sand Dune Park from you coach. Wish I could have join you guys the last time you were there. I use to train at R1 (use to called rAw) on El Segundo Bl. So the park wasn't far at all. I remember I couldn't even walk up that hill the first time. Eventually I could run up and down around 6 or 7 times and then run half way up and run/walk the rest of the way for another 6 times or so. Then I'd do some sprints back and forth going as far as I can which towards the end was maybe 15 steps or so
I use to love being out in the hot sun, bare foot, running in the sand. No way I could do your program. I'll admit that without shame. Too old for that dynamic stuff. Would love to train at your gym, though. And I promise not to get in the way.

We go there usually during the summer. But now you have to make reservations to get on the hill. Now we switched locations and now go down to Long Beach.

Hey where do you train now? I'm at a small club in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Just mess around nogi only now. I started at the Torrance Academy when it first opened up in 1991. I remember vividly as I walked in there Rorion jump from his chair, came to me, warmly shook my hand and said "How are you, my friend." After hanging with Brasilians for so many years I got the impression that in English language school they taught you to call everybody, "My friend." I even do it now, "my friend."
The first thing that struck me about Rorion was that he reminded me of an ethnic Tom Selleck. Being from Hawaii I was a big fan of Magnum PI. Rorion I thought was the best teacher because he was very technical and communicated the best. Rickson, Royler and Royce still were not English experts. After the free intro lesson from Rorion my first official lesson was with Royce. I remember thinking how pathetically skinny he was. The first thing he told me was that "In Jiu-Jitsu we always assume are opponent is bigger and stronger than we are." I remember thinking "Yeah right, spare me the size doesn't matter B.S." I was reminded by that many years later when Royce fought Akebono who out weighed him by what? 200 pounds?
When Rickson left to start his own school in West LA I went with him. I use to take an hour privates with him for about two years in addition to the group class. The guy was something else. When he started fighting more in Japan and Limao was teaching most of the classes I move to the Machado's which was just down the street from me. They had a stacked house: Rigan, Jean-Jacques, Carlos, Roger, John and some top guys like Bob Bass and Fernando Vascusuelos (who everyone at the time was saying was the next Rickson). Those were the glory days then. Little did we know how much things would blow up today.

Reservations??? WTF?!
There was always an ongoing battle there between the residents and the runners. To tell you the truth, I don't blame the people who lived around the park. They work their asses off to afford that million dollar property only to have ghetto punks blasting their f-ing rap and swearing like nobody's business. Imagine you having breakfast with your little daughter and these hoods rats pull up right in front of your house blasting obscene gangsta rap. Not one microscopic scintilla of consideration for others. And they couldn't just run and train like normal people. It was always "come on, n*gga. N*gga this, n*gga that. It use to piss me off. I remember once telling some of the guys to cool it with swearing because there were little kids in the park (under the Mexican nannies watchful eyes). One of the guys just look at me and said, "Bitch please. Don't even."
What are you going to do? They spoiled it for everybody.

The alternative is, at least on the weekends, is to go down to long beach down on Ocean Blvd there are stairs that go down from the board walk on Ocean blvd to the boardwalk on the sand, about 600 steps I believe. There are about 6 sets of stairs like that. I already set the program. It was just getting too crowded so the city clamped down. (sand dune park)

I find it very hard, weight training is hard on the body and limits what i can do with outrigging.
Looking better than everyone keeps me motivated. Once i trained in both i started looking really good and i like it even if if intimidates women.

I played semi professional soccer for 5 years. And I was a swimmer for 3 years before that. Today I do powerlifting but I play soccer once a week, Left back position, and I have one boxing class also once a week. One thing that I learned a long time ago ago was that a tired man is a dead man. Homem mau cansado é homem morto, meu "chapa"
Like I said goal keeper. ;D just kidding.
Exactly. ;)
