Title: Ronnie Coleman is over rated
Post by: FunkyMonk on February 21, 2010, 08:41:02 PM
Ronnie is a really good bodybuilder, I can't deny that. But I am baffled at how he was able to dominate the sport like he did.

Ronnie's midsection is infamously bloated. His symmetry is not that good in my eyes. His chest looks really big and overpowering compared to the rest of his body, and his physique just doesn't look very aesthetically pleasing. Even when ripped, his body has a fat look to it. Like a 2 or 3 year old baby, but with muscle instead of baby fat.

Bodybuilding competitions are all about business and politics obviously. I do believe Cutler and Dexter J deserved their wins. But when Coleman was on his streak the sport must have been balls deep in some serious corruption.

More like balls deep in a lack of competition.  Ronnie was so much bigger than his peers, it wasn't even close mass-wise.  The majority of his wins are pretty legit imo.

I tried a "Coleman Breakfast" one time: big bowl of grits, egg whites, and cheese.  It was revolting.

I've thought about trying that, but never had the cojones to.  Looks as NASTY as the BIG NASTY!

No one should try to duplicate anything Ronnie Coleman does...dude is the freak of freaks.  We'll probably never see another bodybuilder like that until gene doping and myostatin babies start coming of age.

Yeah, I don't really like Ronnie's bonehead/meathead personality too much either. That whole "Yeah buddy!" thing and all that, I don't really understand what's cool about it. I'd rather watch a guy like Arnold speak intelligently and say interesting things than some guy yelling "Nothin but a peanut!".

As a representative of bodybuilding it seems like it reinforces a lot of negative stereotypes. He seems like a nice guy but not exactly a genius.

As for his body, yeah he was massive and ripped. But I don' know why they ignored his bloated midsection, to me it makes his whole physique look really bad. A bit grotesque.

And you think bodybuilding is a sport of upstanding individuals?  You're on the wrong board, following the wrong sport.

So you all don't care about his bloated gut?

If sheer size and definition is where it's at then Marcus Ruhl should have been right up there with Ronnie. What about symmetry?

You obviously havent been following the sport for very long and dont understand how unbelievable Ronnie Coleman was when compared with the rest of pro bodybuilders.  He's in a league of his own, and probably always will be.  Guts in pro bodybuilding are commonplace, btw.

But I think Mr. Olympia should have a good midesection and have near perfect symmetry. I don't think they should give a guy the trophy for being 20 lbs. heavier, if he's got a gut and his symmetry is off.

YET, you think Jay "GUTler" deserved his wins????????????????  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Did you add sugar and butter to the grits, or salt and pepper and butter. Makes it better---the sugar and butter, i mean.

No i've been lifting since 1995 and been following pro bb since 1998.

Some people just have different opinions about what is a "perfect" physique.

I can see how Ronnnie is special and he is a great bodybuilder. But I think Mr. Olympia should have a good midesection and have near perfect symmetry. I don't think they should give a guy the trophy for being 20 lbs. heavier, if he's got a gut and his symmetry is off.

Obviously you haven't figured it out yet. The Mr. Olympia is a freakshow, and the Mr. O must be the freakiest...or is suppose to be. Had Flex Wheeler won in 1998, then thing possibly would have changed...but he didn't so now we are stuck with the freaks. Deal with it.
Title: Re: Ronnie Coleman is over rated

Maybe you havn't figured it out yet.

Mr. O is a business. They push the bodybuilders to the top who they think are marketable and fit the image of what the public wants. The freaks go to the top because that's what the public wants right now.

This is also why foreigners never place highly in the O. It's always Americans. If pure freakishness was what it is all about then guys like Marcus Ruhl would be going much further. It's just politics and cash, nothing more nothing less.

Duh, a business. And Duh, the public likes to see freaks. I've been following the Mr. O since 1994, and lifting on and off the same amount of time you have.  And Dorian Yates, a foreigner won 6x. Nasser placed high at the Mr. O's sometimes beating out Shawn and Flex. Marcus won the 2002 NOC, and when in shape places high, but he has no back detail and lacks triceps...in a top field his weaknesses are glaring.

It appears you dont know shit about pro bodybuilding.  Markus was a monster, but he's not in the same league as Ronnie Coleman. Ronnie was the biggest, most conditioned bodybuilder who actually possessed great aesthetics around 250 lbs.  Once he went over that, it was the freak zone...but Markus never got as dry as Ronnie and had missing bodyparts.

These days bodybuilding is getting really popular. Along with the rising popularity of MMA in the past decade, bodybuilding has also gained a bigger audience. Most American teenagers these days seem to think bodybuilding is cool and they check it out online.

Most dudes these days lift weights and most guys want to have muscle.... I don't know where you live, but in my travels i'm seeing bodybuilding and weightlifting gaining huge popularity in the USA. And in the Asian country i'm living now it's getting much more popular too.

This is very true, in fact the number one trending topic on twitter is the upcoming ASC.

I remember when Ken Shamrock introduced the strength coach to his Ultimate Fighters they were all excited to build beautiful, shapely, new muscle; its a know fact the more muscle you have the tougher you are ( dont forgot the added benefits of combining anabolics). Craig Titus once beat down a UFC fighter with no mma experience.

We all are bro we all are.......

BTW Ive heard many say Franks Zanes legs were to small be a Mr. O, but I personally feel they were much to large for his frame. A better winner would a been the aesthetic Mike Katz....

Timely topic btw....

Ronnie wasn't aesthetic.  He probably wouldn't have one Sandow if judges went with the most aesthetic.  He's got a lot of good bodyparts and then one that's always been a glaring flaw.  His midsection has been ugly even before he had a gut.  Ronnie did however have the market cornered on size with great conditioning.

That's not symmetry, you are describing proportion. I agree on the midsection but I've never heard his chest being overpowering, don't agree there.

Where do you get "lazy" from? The man does lunges OUTSIDE in 100+ degree weather. I'd hardly call that "lazy". Not to mention, the poundages he uses in his lift would CRIPPLE the average IFBB pro. I missed the memo where squatting 800+ lbs was "lazy".

No, "totally smoked" would be what Ronnie did to Jean-Pierre, a year later. He WON THE OLYMPIA; whereas Fux barely cracked the top 10. In 1997, Fux placed 7th to Coleman's 9th.
