Title: Fasting
Post by: Butterbean on February 22, 2010, 06:44:39 AM
I know we are not commanded to do so, but the bible indicates it can be beneficial.  Do any of the Christians here ever fast?

I have in the past.  I've often thought about integrating it into my lifestyle on a consistent basis.  Though it's grueling (c'mon, a brotha is 290lbs and always a buttermilk biscuit from 300 so you know it's tough for me... lol ), but the rewards from following through are amazing.

I think I've read an old thread on fasting you may have started.

Do you do it mainly for physical effect?  Is there any mental/emotional/spiritual effect that you've noticed?

I do it purely for a mental/spiritual effect.  It's a way for me to cleanse my body and mind so that I may start anew.  During the fast I meditate regularly and think a lot about where I'm at in life and where I want to be.

I find that even though I live a relatively disciplined life when it comes to nutrition, exercise, work ethic, etc. I so begin to slip now and then.  The fasting/meditating puts me back on track.

Interesting MindSpring...thanks!

May I ask more about the spiritual side of fasting for you?  I know you are not a Christian but do you believe in a higher power?  Do you pray during these times of fasting?

What are you doing (mentally and physically) when you are meditating?

Are you guys reminded to pray (?) everytime you think of food (or whatever you are fasting from)?

Do you people stay hydrated during this process? If so, do you find you need less/more water to achieve hydration?

There is some higher power, but for me it's not a God or omnipotent being.  It's more like the collection of all that is, was will be.  The energy that brings life to the universe.  I feel like I can be one with it or distracted by the trappings of the physical world.  Pray?  Not like a Christian would.  I'm not asking a supreme being for strength or wisdom or salvation.  I am getting into the moment and getting a grip on priorities.  I do a lot of mental rehearsals.  I typically do it very early in the morning when everything is still quiet.

yogic monks who meditate whilst under an mri have deactivation of brain areas that control the somatosensory cortex, mainly the oaa, which controls the boundary of our being. So the sense of oneness etc. that is often described is real although i have never felt it despite meditating for awhile, i get a feeling of dissociation but never a connectedness.

since u do it for that(spiritual) reason i'll chime in....my parents who r muslim of course fast for ramadan (its actually ramazan but the mispronounciation is how americans know it)also consider it a break of your fast if you curse, watch something sexual , lose your temper, treat someone bad etc...

Fasting is an important part of the Necronomicon rituals, one must purge any food source from the body before invoking these beings, lest they consume you trying to get to the food.

No solid food for 8 days?

Does the juice produce much fiber if you know what I mean  ???

No solid food.  Challenging at times, but overall not as hard as it sounds, because I was drinking so much.

Surprisingly, yes there was enough to have solid movements, if that's what you're asking.   :)  But talk about cleaning out your system.

I'm trying to do another five days this week.

Buddyro!  Sorry about that.  I didn't see your message.

In saying that the rewards are great when you fast, I mean that I LITERALLY begin to focus my physical needs to God.  Instead of food, my attention becomes more concentrated on him.  Even with the headaches and insatiable hunger for food to nourish my body, I direct all those needs to God through prayer and heartfelt pleads for Him to fill my desires with His love.  It's like I'm killing my worldly desires and focusing my thirst and hunger for Christ.

It's hard for me to explain any better than that.  :-\

haha...yea OK...well to each his own...

I've fasted for 7 days on 3 separate occasions...no solid food period just juice, water, protein shakes And a slew of vitamines and supps like flax seed oil, fish oil, multi vitamin, fiber pills, amino acids...

I get in a zone and after the initial 24 hour period I'm not even hungry and have no cravings at all...

during this time I stop lifting weights & just do light to moderate cardio...

I gradually reintroduce food over the course of the following week...Like a small salad & fruit on day one, maybe add a chicken breast on day 2,and so on...but positively absolutely no fast food during that time...
