Title: Re: Sleep. Help, Suggestions?!?!?
Post by: Option D on February 24, 2010, 08:59:10 AM
For the last couple weeks I've only been able to get a couple hours of sleep a day at best.  Some days I get no sleep and just keep going.  Prior to this I always had an easy 8 hours or more a day of solid sleep.  It was like someone flipped a switch.  I have never in my life had problems sleeping but for the last few weeks, I cannot fall asleep.  This seems to be the forum for strange problems lol...  Anyone know what the fuck would cause something like this?  I have not changed anything in my life.  It was litterally like a switch, all of a sudden.  I will lay there for hours trying to fall asleep and can't.  I'm really lucky if I get 2 hours of sleep per day at best in the last few weeks.  Anybody know WTF would cause this bullshit?  I'm 41 and have never ever had a problem sleeping before 2 weeks ago.  And I haven't changed anything in my life food or otherwise.
I use vikes...works awesome...

Hugo:
Some things you may wish to consider…

First & foremost – Melatonin.
Melatonin is responsible for regulating circadian rhythms.
The Pineal gland in the brain manufactures & secretes this hormone. Unfortunately, the Pineal begins to calcify at puberty and that calcification leads to a progressive decrease in Melatonin production the older we get.

Supplementing with Melatonin can help reestablish healthy sleep patterns. 3-6 mg is the average. Some people see better results with lozenges. Also, it may take several days of consistent use for it to kick in, so be sure to give it a chance.

Also, the pineal gland receives indirect input via visual pathways (the retino-hypothalamic tract).
Dark stimulates Melatonin release, while light inhibits it.
Make certain the room you sleep in is DARK!
And if you insist on using the computer late at night, at least turn down the brightness on your monitor.

Stress?  Maybe nothing all that bad, but stress nonetheless?
Job, school, family, big purchase (like a house), getting married, having a baby, going on a trip, expecting company...

Living on a college campus can make it hard for me to go to sleep

few things that helps me, not in any order

1. Take Melatonin about 30 mins or an hour before you plan on sleeping, Optium Nutrition sells about 100 days worth for 3 or 4 bucks, I dont remember
2. Make sure room is dark prior to falling asleep, dont just turn out the light then expect to get sleepy quick, give yourself time to get sleepy
3. Make sure room is cool, I have to open a window at night to cool the room down so I can sleep, sometimes I wake up freezing but its better than staying awake
4. No tv or loud sounds close to time you want to go to sleep
5. Don't do anything that takes a lot of thinking before you go to sleep, otherwise you'll be replaying it in your head while you lay there, same goes for stress, it'll keep you up.

And I dont do it but I've heard it works, take a warm shower about 45 mins or so before you plan on sleeping.

Me living on a college campus with loud music playing a few rooms down almost every night, I rarely stay awake more than 10 minutes once I lay down.

This seems to be the forum for strange problems lol...

haha  :D

I have not changed anything in my life.  ... And I haven't changed anything in my life food or otherwise.

Change something. Either a new activity or a different routine. Exhaust your mind with something new.
