A killer whale lived up to his name Wednesday when he drowned a trainer at Orlando's Sea World in front of horrified onlookers.
Police said the female trainer slipped and fell into his pool but a witness said the orca rose up from the water and grabbed her by the waist and shook her.
The 30-year-old, 5-ton marine mammal - the largest killer whale in captivity - has killed before: He drowned a biology student in 1991 and a naked, dead gatecrasher was found draped on his back in 1999.
The previous incidents were not attacks but misguided attempts by the otherwise docile whale to play, experts said.
But Tilikum, nicknamed Telly, is getting old and he may be getting cranky.
Florida park guest Victoria Biniak told WKMG-TV that the trainer was outlining the upcoming show to tourists when the huge orca suddenly loomed from the water.
"Telly took off really fast in the tank and he came back, shot up in the air, grabbed the trainer by the waist and started thrashing (her) around," Biniak said.
"It was violent."
Paramedics were unable to revive the 40-year-old trainer, who was pronounced dead at the scene at about 2 p.m. The park was closed.
"We have never in the history of our parks experienced an incident like this and all of our standard operating procedures will be under review," park president Dan Brown said.
Experts said they weren't sure what set off the whale.
"What he did in the previous two incidents were not attacks - to him, the people were toys, and to a whale, being underwater for 20 minutes is nothing. This sounds a little more like an attack," said Naomi Rose, a senior scientist at the Humane Society of the United States.
It was unclear what will happen to Tillikum.
"I dread to think of what their options are," Rose said.
She suggested he be retired to a sea pen in Iceland, like Keiko, the killer whale Hollywood made famous.
She said tragedies like this prove that powerful, intelligent wild animals should not be kept in pens and required to perform for tourists.
Social creatures, killer whales get stressed in pens, she said. In 1991, 20-year-old Keltie Byrne, a University of Victoria marine biology student and part-time trainer, slipped into the orca pool at Sealand of the Pacific in British Columbia.
Tilikum took her into his mouth and dragged her around the pool, most of the time underwater.
The champion swimmer broke free and tried to escape, but Tilikum and two female orcas blocked her from getting out of the pool and began tossing her back and forth between them.
A screaming Byrne tried to climb out of the pool but the whales pulled her back in.
She drowned in the mouth of an orca holding her underwater. Sealand of the Pacific closed the following year and Tillikum was shipped to Sea World, where his primary job was siring calves - not performing.
His part in the Sea World show is brief and comes just at the end, when he soaks the audience with massive splashes. And still there were casualties.
In 1999, 27-year-old Daniel Dukes, who had apparently stayed in the park overnight, was found dead in the morning, naked and draped across the whale.
It appeared he had tried to swim with the orca: his b bathing suit was in the water and his body was scraped, suggesting the whale had dragged him along the bottom of the tank.
He was not bitten or chewed. The most famous orca at Sea World is known as Shamu, but there is no single whale called that. It's the trademarked stage name of the star of Sea World's famous Orca show and is shared by many adult male or female killer whales.
The Orca show is Sea World's biggest draw, and crowds line up far ahead of the performances at Shamu Stadium, which seats 5,500.

Don't fuck with nature's killing machines!
-
they should have learned from the richard harris incident.
-
If their fucking name didn't tell you they were dangerous than nothing will.
-
i'm not reading all that but i see nothing about eating body parts r anything...even with the gate crasher person. looks like this whale dont have a clue when to release when it pulls someone under.

Intelligent animals like Killer Whales and dolphins shouldn't be kept to perform. We neither understand them mentally or treat them accordingly. They should be out doing what they do best, hunting.
Plus, they need to make some non-slip surfaces there, everybody slips, and then Bam! And that may be a key, the whale may think this sudden movement is play, or it may trigger their hunting instinct to seek wounded prey, who knows.
G, this has happened in the wild with Pilot Whales, and on video, the Pilot what takes a scuba diver down, and as soon as it has realized that the person is struggling to breath, it pushes the the diver fast up to the surface.
You may be right. Since it is so accustomed to playing with the trainers, it may have thought, "let's play". Aloe it was said he is getting old, do whales get senility?
-
As sad as this news is, it just goes to show that you a wild animal will always be a wild animal. No matter how much we try to domesticate them, they will still retain their inherent nature to hunt, kill and protect, etc.

i'd say you are probably right. looks like this whale has a fix for drowning. as intelligent as pilots so it would be able to sense when someone is struggling. back to wild he goes.

plus, they can know that we are air breathers like them, they can use their sonar to see our lungs, which are like theirs. I think that he may have a strong prey drive that is part of his "play".
I've never trusted them. I've never trusted huge, intelligent animals with teeth, that happen to live in a environment that man has not adapted to.

Agreed.
If you want to see them so bad go take a trip to the coast, there are tours for things like this.

Yeah, it's like the people who want to have Great White Sharks in captivity to study them. This is th the most feared fish in the sea, and you want it in captivity.
I do believe in the beauty, but it is a dangerous beauty. Animals that are huge, have huge sharp teeth, and can process info, and exist in water, which we are not adapted to, will eventually result in human casualities.
Poly, that's what I'm saying. You want to go swim with them, go to the coast. All they do is train them to do tricks, fuck don't the animals get tired?
-
oh boy...when they get cloning right...we are going to have some real good predators in the zoo with large brains. hopefully one or 2 get loose. :-\

That is what i go do and would not try to swim with a White without a cage. Have you ever seen one of these whales up close?? They are huge and they are extremely intelligent from what i read and can go off at any time.
It is a tradegy that someone died but anyone who has a brain seen this coming.
-
Deserved it, ts not a pet, shouldnt be trained like a slave for human pleasure and money.
-
If a whale gets tired of of doing tricks for schomes, next thing you ass is dead.

Do you think this might some day happen? I think it can.
-
I was at the Baltimore Aquarium a few yrs back and they have Bottlenose dolphins. They did their tricks, and after the show, I went to the pool to see the dolphin up close. They are cool looking, but I don't trust them. Plus the fucker was shitting in the pool---of course where else is the dolphin gonna shit. But the trainers swim in that.
Yeah, Mr Nobody, if a whale or dolphin gets tire of doing tricks, what are you gonna do? Sometimes fish just don't cut it. What's next starve them until they perform?
G, I've always said that they need to let a few raptors or T Rexs run loose, and there would less fat people around. Either they would get eaten, or they would lose weight from the cardio.

it's a really Sad news. I went to Sea world last december and I had a great time. my Problem is, why hasn't Sea world get rid of that particular Whale?.....he killed 2 people in the past and they still kept him in the park. I feel a big lawsuit coming. imagine a 12,000lbs Male Orca holding you down under water until you die. By the way, these Orcas are known to kill and eat The Mighty Great white Sharks.....Shocking!!!!!

good question. Probably because he is a draw, and they feel he can be "rehabilitated". Plus, it's not like Killer Whales can just be "had", ya gotta make due with what you got.

Are you sure that the Orcas eat them?? I know that they will ram the hell out of a White and they will basically choke and die. I have never read that Orcas "EAT" the Whites. These animals should not be in these shows and it grinds my gears that they are. Sucks that someone died but how shocking can it be?? Everyone knows that the ORCA whale is the KING OF THE OCEAN. I have seen them twice and with my love of sharks is well known, i was in awe when i seen these whales.

That Orca should be hung....

Yep, killer Whales ram the hell out of Great Whites to kill them and they eat the liver, that's it, they kill them for their oil rich liver.

I have actually seen three Dolphins attack a 12 foot Tiger Shark off of beach down here. I always thought that Sharks knew to leave whenever Dolphins come around. I love it when Dolphins are around because i have to worry less about Bull's, Lemons, Hammerhead's and Tiger's while diving. ;) Dolphins working side-By-Side helping us out. 8)

National Geographic had a complete documentary on that 3 weeks ago. it happened off the coast of california about 10yrs ago. I think youtube has a clip on that. the entire video was captured by tourist that day. it showed how that Orca rammed thru the Great white from underneath and drown his ass and then eat his liver. that shit was unbelievable.

I could not even imagine getting in a pool with one a Orca whale.
I remember seeing the original Shamoo, i believe and he got to splash me when i was like 5 or 6. ;D

looks like the "killer" whales are not THAT happy runing in circle in the same pathetically small pool when they are in fact suposed to swim in the wild gigantic oceans.

Screw that. Let him keep killing the morons that wanna jump in the pool with a Orca whale and say, "Jump through a hoop". So, he gets fed fish by hand but if i remember correctly, Orcas were doing just fine eating whatever they wanted to in the ocean. 8)
-

they're called "Killer Whale" for a reason. in the wild, those Giants chase sperm whales and other types and devour them to pieces. you can never take the natural instinct out of a wild Beast. I guess killer whales earn the rights to be on Top of the food chain now.

True. Although a human floating around in the ocean has ALWAYS been at the bottom of the food chain.
I remember when I took a dolphin sight seeing tour near Corpus Christi, the tour guide was very anti-Sea World and said what they do to dolphins is similar to putting them in a prison yard.

WOW! Another person who GETS IT!! I am sorry but these Mammals were not meant to be put on public display and people cry when someone gets hurt or killed by one of "GODS" creatures. They are supposed to be in the OPEN SEA!!

I think the time is right to consider allowing the killer whale a bye into Getbig's battle royale with the bear and the gorilla. Winner take all.

was the killing in the backside tank, or the display tank up front?

I've been searching high and low for it with no luck. With all those tourists there you have to believe someone has it on tape somewhere. They just need to hurry up and upload it!

When the sh*t hits the fan...people start saying.
How come? why? bla bla bla.
Let me try to give a damn, again.

i tend to believe the audience members (the whale grabbed her) more than sea world (with everything to lose).
They are closing the park for 3 days. PR nightmare. They have every motive to lie. Unless this happened in some back tank, i have no clue why video hasn't come up yet.
It seems like common sense that using food to force nature's largest killing machine to do tricks, then playing in the water with them, is just madness.

No, it was definitely an accident. There's no way the whale would've done it on porpoise.
