You are a fucking moron.  Pantera is legendary.  Some of the cleanest, fastest, and most difficult guitar and drum riffs ever.  Any professional guitar player will tell you that Dimebag was one of the best guitarist of the 21st century.  Pantera defined Metal.  Bands like Lamb of God, and Black Label Society, come close to their skill but Pantera set the standard.

Their music is good. They just turned into bitches. Whining and bitching about their drug demons and addictions.

"Poor me. i'm so rich and famous I partied, did coke, drank and fucked tons of women and now i'm so miserable! I'm gonna go to rehab 20 times"

That's not metal. That's not badass. That's bitch.

so they need to be like GG Allin?

Metallica / Slayer / AIC all on one bill?  You're right - if Pantera was still going, that would be about my four favorite bands of all time.

Musically, it is 20 years ago in Eastern Europe. ;)

As an aside, you guys will like this vid. It's from Tool's 1st concert on their Aenima tour circa 1996.

What makes this vid great, besides the song, is that it was shot by a fan who knew where to point the camera.

Had this been professionally shot, the a-hole Director would've been switching shots every two seconds, rendering the vid unwatchable.

From Meshuggah's new live disc "Alive" - this is New Millenium Cyanide Christ (the 2nd song in the vid is "Stengah) live in Montreal.  The guitar riff locked in with the drums is an unstoppable force.......

These guys are using 8-string Ibanez guitars which sound unlike anything else I have heard in metal.  Check out the intro to Stengah to get a good idea of just how "deep" a guitar can play.

Having long hair and being able to do a lot of superfast sweep picking to a cheesy drumtrack, may make you a virtuoso, but it does not make you legendary.  There is something to be said for having a personality and being part of a great band.  Dimebag was and is the king, everyone who knew him loved him and said he was a great guy.  Also he was just cool, he played with ease, rythme, and character.  All these speed metal virtuoso may be talented but they all sound the same, they are stiff, and cencentrating so hard it looks like they are constepated.  These guys are nerds, they are all into sci-fi, ant internet porn.  Dimebag was into smokin weed, partying, banging chicks, and having a badass pink beard.  RIP Dime the undisputed king of Metal!!!!

The problem with your solo guitarist virtuoso type of guys is that, although they can shred, they have no true songwriting substance like their "less technical", successful brethren.

Also, bands like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, and even modern spin offs like Rammstein, constitute thrash metal.
GNR, Alice in Chains, Dream Theater, Zeppelin, solo guys, are different genres.

Don't worry... please keep it the Portuguese visa, since Brazilians don't need visa to go to Europe.

Except for one thing. In modern metal virtually everyone shreds like a virtuoso. It's expected that a metal guitar player will shred like a guy.  That's basically dismissing the entire modern metal scene.

Look at Megadeth now with Chris Broderick. Nevermore with Jeff Loomis (who just came out with an instrumental shred cd). COB with Alexi etc etc etc. They shred and write awesome tunes, so your analogy is flawed.  Less technical just means too lazy to learn how to play your instrument properly.  It's rather akin to arrested development.

Speaking of shredding have you guys heard any of Dino Cazares newer material?  All those years in FF and I never knew the guy could solo like that.

Speaking of great players when is Chris Amott going to come out with a solo album?  I love Mike's playing on a lot of the Carcass stuff but man I wish someone would toss out his goddamn wah pedal,  Every fucking solo!

Played in bands on and off for 20 some odd years. Toured for a while with a few of them, made some crappy indie cds. I'm on haitus from my last band as I'm back in college again and run a web design biz and hold down a day job as well. I still play 1-2 hours a day tho. It's an addiction. My drummer is playing with these guys now http://www.myspace.com/ocdtheband. Not exactly my style of music but they get steady gigs so he's happy.

Dimebag  maybe a weed smoking, party goer, chick banger guitarist, but I was talking about playing skill.
I mean Dimebag was great, but he was not the best guitarist ever, not even top 5.

Michael Romeo is part of a great band, ever heard of Symphony X?

I agree there are a lot of "virtuosos" that sound the same and all they do is play fast sweeps, like Michael Angelo Batio, Herman Li and Buckethead, but Romeo is NOT one of them.

Seriously, if you think Romeo is like that, then you don't know Romeo.

Michael Romeo, Petrucci, Yngwie, etc. are all amazing guitar players that not only have incredible skill and speed, but also have outstanding composition skills and "feeling" in their playing.

Its ok, if you prefer hardcore thrash metal guitar playing like Dimebag (Pantera), Metallica, Testament, etc.
but the best guitarists are others.

Fuck yeah! the guy can go on for hours about theory... his knowledge is as deep as Petrucci's, he also knows a lot of difficult jazz/fusion theory not just rock scales and neo classical. He told me his biggest inspiration musically was Holst: the planets and a lot of early Ozzy ;)

That album and Individual Thought Patterns (with my fav. guitarist of all time Andy La Rocque of K.D) is what I cut my teeth on for technical playing and chops when I was learning to play guitar :D :D :D

Hell yeah. La Rocque has been a fav since I first heard Welcome Home on Power Hour on Much Music.
