Title: Question about straps.
Post by: SF1900 on March 08, 2010, 07:02:32 PM
I have a quick question about using straps. I could move a lot more weight on back day when I use straps. However, I was thinking about foregoing straps for a while just out of curiosity. On the other hand, I think my back workout will suffer. So, which is a better option:

1) use straps only on your heaviest lift.

2) never use straps even if you can't lift as much. Eventually you will build up to the amount of weight you can lift with straps.

Do you want to work your grip or your back? I prefer to work my back on back day.

You will need to switch-hit to achieve symmetry using this method.

only use them when you HAVE to. and that word "have" (to) is subjective....so its up to you to decide when its necessary... i would air on the side of it not being needed, only when your back is still begging for more but your palms, fingers, forearms are all giving out before your back does.

I use them for heavy shrugsthat I can control...for example..just this past weekend I last minute decided to get some shrug work in (left the damn straps at home though) I couldn't get nice slow reps at 315 like I can with my straps b/c the sh*t would just slide out my palms as my grip fatigued during the slow reps towards the end.

I ended up rushing through the set basically before my grip fatigued which sucked b/c I looked like "that dude" that doesn't have his weight under control. Just rushed through it. I was ashamed  :'(

IMO you should used a jockstrap on all workouts, not just back day. You got to protect your McNuggets.

No 1 is just right, but it isn't all. You should use them also when it helps you to focus to your lift. For example, I use them in just three exercises: dead lift, seated row with wide grip, and bicep curls with barbell. For everything else I use foam pad's or nothing at all. I do curls with regular barbell and it is somewhat easier to control with straps, you don't have to squeeze the bar with your hands so much and you can focus to your biceps.

I use them for every working set i do for back and shrugs.

Let's me concentrate on the muscle even more because i don't even think about holding the weight. I actually try and make my hands and forearms go limp and just use the target muscle to move the weight.

forearms and grip get plenty of work doing curls and hammers

har har har... what I mean is like a 1" thick foam matress, which you cut out two square pieces, size 2 x your palm size. With those you get very good grip without using straps. And use the monkey grip, you little chimp...

although i dont like them but sure they are very useful with heavy back sets!!.. your back is normally stronger than your grip so without starps your grip may reach the point of failure while your back still needs more!!..

Let's see...

I, for one, think that your back workouts should suffer because of a weak grip. Your back workout should be finished once your forearms have become fatigued... yeah, that works.

Grip get stronger very fast if you don't use straps all the time. And how many of you guys use more than 1.5 x body weight for pull-downs and rows? If you need straps while doing chins without any extra plates, you really need stronger grip more than straps.

And how about a lifting belt? How many of you guys wear it all the time from the locker room, during all exercises and take it of just for the shower? I use lifting belt for 0 exercises, because I have realize long time a go that I need strong lower back more than some freaking belt to support my lifts. Using the belt means that you don't use your muscles to support your body and your middle section grows weaker. I know a bunch of lifters who has problems with their lower back and who try to help it heal by wearing lifting belt which is wrong way to do it. You get lower back problems at the first place by wearing belt, and you can get rid of them only by training your middle section and make it strong enough for the sport. For example, I do crunhes and hyperextensions every time I go to gym, it is a great way to warm up. 3 to 5 sets of 20 reps depending what I'am going to do. 3 sets, If training chest and arms, 4 sets if training legs and five sets if training back and shouders.

Same reason I use straps, they let you focus more on pulling with your lats and not worrying about grip or positioning of the wrists as much.

Grip strenght = big and powerfull forearm...who cares about them? Those who want their arms look muscular and strong. Quite simple if you know anything about the sport  ;D
