GRAPEVINE, Texas -- They say everything is bigger in Texas, and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks big.
So it seemed only natural that Arum, along with his new best buddy, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, would get together to put on a fight at Jones' spectacular $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington
.
That is where welterweight titleholder and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao will face former titleholder Joshua Clottey on Saturday night (HBO PPV, 9 ET, $49.95) in a fight that Arum considers one of the crowning achievements of his storied 44-year career as a boxing promoter.
The reason is simple: location, location, location.
Pacquiao-Clottey is certainly a significant fight just based on the involvement of Pacquiao, boxing's biggest worldwide star. But the stadium also plays a major role in generating interest.
"Much of the buzz is because it's at Cowboys Stadium. Of course, it's Manny Pacquiao, but it's also Cowboys Stadium," said Bill Caplan, Arum's longtime publicist and boxing lifer.
Said HBO senior vice president Mark Taffet, who runs HBO PPV, "I've been involved in nearly 160 pay-per-view events since 1991 with HBO PPV. This is the first pay-per-view fight we are doing in a stadium, so it's a totally unique experience for us. From a business perspective, as you know, Pacquiao-Clottey is called 'The Event,' so there was very specific recognition about the importance of Cowboys Stadium and what we believed that this stadium was bringing to the table."
That's exactly what Arum hoped for when he talked to Jones about getting away from the same old, same old casino fights.
"I am really, really excited," Arum said. "You get stale doing the same thing over and over again, going back to the casinos to put on these big events. With this event going to a fabulous, fabulous stadium like Cowboys Stadium, we're bringing the fights to the people. I think boxing can once again establish its place among the major sports in this country as it is in so many places in the world."
Promoting fights in major arenas is not new for Arum, but it's been awhile. And now he is happy to return and do it at Cowboys Stadium, where a crowd of 45,000 is expected.
"He's been promoting for 40-something years and this really gets his juices flowing," Caplan said. "It recharges Bob's battery. It's huge in a business way and in a psychological way for Bob. The interest and the enthusiasm never ends if you do new things."
Arum promoted the first fight at the Houston Astrodome, then considered an architectural marvel, when Muhammad Ali defended the heavyweight championship against Cleveland Williams in 1966.
"That building just blew me away. I had never seen anything like it before in my life, the suites, the amenities, there was nothing like it in the world," Arum said. "Now it's 44 years later and I'm back in another part of Texas. Cowboys Stadium is the most phenomenal building I have ever been in. Words really can't describe it, from that big screen [the stunning 72-foot high, 160-foot wide, $40 million HD video board] to the restaurants to the electronics. It is something really, really special. So it is a really great honor for me to be the first one to do a fight at the Astrodome and the first person to do a fight in Cowboys Stadium. I love that. … It's just thrilling."

I predict Pac wins, but Clottey makes a fight of it. Probably Pacs toughest opponent in a while. But, Pac wins a UD 116-112

styles make fights.
odd angle punching midget vs an excellent defensive fighter who moves forward but has peanut brittle for hands.
manny likes to bounce n clottey needs to keep it a close quarters fight so he will work to cut the ring a bit.
manny by points but he will get hit alot in this fight, hit too much n we'll see for the 1st can he take constant shots from a bigger man. upsets do happen. ???
-
Manny will crush him he has run out of people to fight now its just for money. He has beat everyone already thats worth a shit.

Agree, except it's not a upset when the person who beat you is actually better than you. ppl considered it an upset whe B'hop beat Trinidad. Clotty will destroy Pacman, Pac hasn't fought or beaten a fighter in their prime in yrs. His power is overated, as amny times as he hit De LA hoya he couldn't knock him out, he didn't even hurt him. Hatton had no chin and Cotto has a suspect chin, he'd have gotten ko'ed against Mosley also if he didn't ran and Mosley isn't known for his power.
Clotty in 10. Pac shoulda fought Mayweather and collect his last big pad day b4 being exposed.

Paul is the only that may have a shot at beating him due to his unorthodox style.

paul is 73 inches, 100 punch output w/out hearns power and faced bigger man. he'd kill manny. roach said mosley was tooooooooooo big from manny since he balloons over 160 at fight time and manny has problems getting to 140. that's from his trainer...btw. fmw...well u see what happen with that. nasty put the bait out there for you counter puncher. manny is like tyson. they are walking him thru this. berto...young, good chin, aggressive and monster hand speed which would give manny hell cause can probably beat hiim to the punch. i'm not sure manny would fair well against judah if he could keep his head...given he does produce 2-3 shot combos that can down you but it's a head case thing with him.

Manny's hand speed is the killer and his will to win thats why he wins, agreed not the best boxer a puncher indeed. Berto isnt as fast as Manny.

Paul Williams is to big for Manny.
I would like to see Manny vs Sergio Martinez that would be an awesome fight.

Clottey has hand issues?...i didn't know that. Probably why Manny's fighting him...Makes things easy when the other guy breaks a hand and can't punch you back, or he's mindful of it and doesn't just let his hands go

i've seen 2 of his fights where his hands (a break n a fracture) went south on him during the fight. if his hands stay good, that crab defense stays solid, uses head butts n iffy shots which he has done his whole career...then this should be a nice one for 12 rds.
(Manny Pacquiao is the prohibitive favorite when he meets Joshua Clottey on March 13th at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. But Clottey, a pro for nearly 15 years, presents a style matchup that might make things harder for Pacquiao than some people think. Here are a few reasons why.)
1. Size
Clottey, at 5’8 and with a 70” reach, is not the biggest fighter Pacquiao has faced–that distinction belongs to Oscar De La Hoya–but there is a serious caveat here: Clottey will be the biggest fighter Pacquiao has ever faced who can be considered at or near his prime. De La Hoya, 35 when he squared off with Pacquiao, looked like a city morgue resident when he answered the opening bell. In addition, Clottey has fought above the welterweight division several times and has the added bonus of not having to boil down to a catchweight for Pacquiao the way Miguel Cotto did.
2. Defense
Unlike Miguel Cotto, whose iffy defense forces him to endure vast amounts of punishment, Clottey maintains a tight guard and is as difficult to hit cleanly on the chops as a turtle wearing a hockey mask. Can Pacquiao break through often enough to wear Clottey down? If not, Clottey, a bigger, stronger welterweight, will still be relatively fresh–and dangerous–during the late rounds. Clottey is not the type of fighter that breaks down physically as the rounds go by. Whether he remains in the fight “mentally” by the late stages, however, is another question altogether.
3. Chin
In nearly 40 fights Clottey has been dropped only once, a fluky first round knockdown suffered at the hands of Miguel Cotto. Over the years, Clottey has taken shots from Antonio Margarito, Cotto, Zab Judah, Richard Gutierrez, and Carlos Baldomir without being seriously hurt or stopped. It seems unlikely that Pacquiao, as big a puncher as he is, will be able to flatten Clottey with one blow. Pacquiao, then, must count on pacing himself and preparing to go twelve hard rounds.
4. Roughhousing
Hangovers are practically guaranteed when Clottey steps into the ring–for his opponents, that is. Clottey is not above headbutting and chucking low blows chockablock, and he has already been disqualified once in his career, against Carlos Baldomir in 2000. Look for Clottey to try to rattle Pacquiao with some guerrilla tactics in the ring. This is an angle Pacquiao has probably not seen since his bout with ornery Agapito Sanchez nearly a decade ago. If Clottey is successful with some of his tricks, then Pacquiao is almost guaranteed to be cut at some point during the fight. And a steady stream of blood flowing into his eye will not make things any easier for the Filipino superstar.
5. The Left Hand
Clottey is primarily a left hook machine. He often doubles and triples up on his left, alternating between body and head, with precision. Occasionally the hooks arc into uppercuts, adding even more danger from portside. Clottey also posses a fine, if underutilized, jab and may ramp up its usage to keep Pacquiao occupied and to disrupt him from darting in and out with impunity. If Pacquiao moves consistently to his right in order to avoid the common southpaw weapon–right hands down the pipe–then he will be falling into the patch of the dangerous Clottey left. It remains to be seen whether Clottey, who has stopped only one opponent over the last five years, hits hard enough to drop Pacquiao, but it would be unwise to try and find out.

Manny will get crushed, he's fought nobody except an over the hill de la hoya who would've destroyed Manny in his prime.
When they fought, everyone was saying that De La Hoya would destroy him because he was too big, too skilled and too experienced.
But after he was given a humiliating boxing lesson that retired him from the ring these same "experts" want to claim he was over the hill. Was he over the hill the previous year when he lost a split decision to Mayweather?
-
Good to see two guys being classy rather than pulling some Maywether or James Toney shit talking.
I get tired of that. It's going to be a good fight.

No one thought Oscar would demise that quickly, even Teddy Roach who trained Oscar the previous fight said Oscar was 'shot' and he realized that when he was training him the yr b4. He fought a 'shot' fighter 1 yr later, ofcourse it makes a big difference. It happens to every great fighter. Holmes beating Ali, Tarver beating jones, Norris beating Leonard, Manny beating Oscar ;)

Pretty much any chance you have of making a decent point with this post goes straight down the shitter when you refer to one of the most famous boxing trainers in the world as "Teddy Roach"

Can't that stadium hold like 80 to 100 thousand? why not fill the thing completely up? They should be selling $25 standing room only tickets at bars...They could have gotten the colleges in the area involved and easily got 100,000 people in the stands...
