Teacher Writes 'Loser' on Student's Assignments
March 14) --
The mother of a sixth-grader in Buncombe County, N.C., is upset about name-calling in her daughter's classroom -- but the students aren't the ones slinging the mud.
Patty Clement is debating other parents in Candler, N.C., over Rex Roland, a teacher who sometimes writes the word "loser" on the assignments of his 11- and 12-year-old students.
Clement first noticed Roland's notes in November, when he wrote "loser" in the margin of her daughter's paper. The principal at Enka Middle School assured Clement it would not happen again, but it did, recently, when Roland wrote, "minus 20% for being a loser" on her daughter's assignment.
"This is wrong," Clement told Asheville's WLOS-TV. "The techniques need to change."
Other parents defend Roland's progressive teaching methods, saying he is fond of giving nicknames to students and using the word "loser" in jest, as a way of relating to students.
"A lot of the students he has are academically gifted students, and so one of the ways that he would joke with them would be if they scored a 110, he always gave extra credit, so if they scored a 110, 120 on a paper, he would have a joke on it -- 'loser'," one parent, Kathy Andrews, told WLOS. "That's what he engages in ... he gets on their level and their words and tries to relate to them."
Her son, Ian Andrews, a former student of Roland, described him as "the cool teacher that people wanted to be in class with."
Clement said the difference in opinion over Roland, a 12-year veteran at Enka Middle School, has made her daughter a target of bullying and harassment. She told The Associated Press her daughter received almost 100 threatening text messages last week, forcing Clement to keep her home from school.
lement claims Roland's teaching style is harming her daughter's learning process.
"He threw my daughter's pencil box in the hallway and she got in trouble by another teacher for disrupting his class -- for something that she did not do," she told the AP.
Roland has apologized for using the "l-word," saying it was his way of relating to the students. But Clement continues to press for his suspension.
"I don't know what we're going to do, but I'll fight to the end," she told WLOS.
An online petition titled "Please Get Rex Roland Out of Enka Middle School" currently has 151 signatures, urging supporters to "demand justice for this little girl, anyone else he's doing this to who's afraid to come forward, and all of those who will come in contact with him in the future." It is addressed to Buncombe County School District Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin.
The school district has said the issue is a "personnel matter" that is the subject of an ongoing investigation, according to the AP. Roland could not be reached for comment.

she is a loser.

A teacher relating on a level like that is mindful of parents trying to be their kids friends more so than mentors.
Parents today are oft remiss in the ways children are raised , but quick to point out others faults , so the parent here should be IMO above reproach if she's that upset over this.
Education should be rewarding and not a negative experience or how else do you keep and peak childrens interests ?
I've been a fan of Sir Ken Robinson for a long time.
It's a long video so I don't expect many to take the time , but I beleive his way of thinking is very insightful.

Me,I prefer the parking lot, asphalt's a lot harder plus plenty of car windows to toss him through. Then tie him to the rear bumper and do donuts around the parking lot thereby doing a public service by providing good, wholesome, family entertainment ;D 8)

Today in the UK, there were two conflicting stories in the news on this scary subject.
Firstly, a mother was written to by her child's school because the child hadn't attended PE class. The mother responded that the girl had been in hospital with a sprained wrist and broken ankle due to a fall in gymnastics class.
2ndly: there's a sad story about a boy whose parents took a £18,000 payoff from a peadophile PE teacher rather than expose him to the press. Obviously it's suddenly all over the tabloid papers as the parents are now going out and fetching money from the press. Boy turns out to be a fast runner. He's like 16 now.

that's is NOTTTTTTT good constructive criticism if you ask me (missed the NOTTTTTT part)

I'd probably correct the teacher or at the very least give them a nice nickname. :)

I was rapped about the wrists for forgetting to bring my recorder and being unable to read music and that did me no harm.
I can sing and dance instead

now that's upsetting. when I was being flippant and removed my message I get quoted.
being slapped with a ruler and being told to do my music scales on a ruler when I'd obviously purposely not brought my recorder because I was no good at it was a lesson, ok?
I think children should have proper decent tutors, that's all

anyone who writes minus 20% for being a loser ought get a proper job.

The nickname would be sweet and rhyme with runt. It would be said with a warm smile after politely explaining that personalizing communication was a way to motivate better teaching. :)

This teacher should be fired on the spot with no question or answer. Escort the idiot right out the front door.

:) ... You're right PB ... but the teacher isn't 100% at fault this time around because he's done it before and nothing really happened
So like a child he believed he could get away with his bad behavior again
but don't forget ... there's some kids that think he's a cool teacher... { good god I don't know why }
I've seen that before somewhere ... acting like an ass and getting an audience to appplaud ::)

kids are spoiled pussies these days. They all need a swift kick in the ass. Most parents too.

Migs, that is why I'm not a fan of timeouts, a spank on the ass or hand is not a bad thing

Most people are spoiled cooters these days. There was a time when parents generally thought they were developing little people who would some day be independent. A great deal of people now care about being their child's friend than doing what's right. Also, people are scared poopless of being alone in old age so kids get away with too much crap. The same can be said about relationships only the dysfunction gets magnified. :)

it ws a british school with very english tradations...
crime : improper tie tied in uniform > punishment : stand in hot sun for 1 hr during break and miss break
crime : put upside down thumb tacks on english teachers chair > punishment : get 10 hard whoops with wooden cane on butt or knuckles and maybe a facial tight slap to boot
crime : socks dont match or one is higher than other > punishment : run around school in heat 20 laps holding your shoes on top of your head
crime : throw chalk at teacher while his back is turned, hitting him squarely on neck > punishment : stand in heat for 1 hr holding arms straight out and get caned every time u drop your arms.
crime : draw a pretty damn good impression of the english teacher having sex with the door man, on the blackboard > punishment : get expelled for good (happened to someone i know)

Were these punishments good deterrents for subsequent infractions?

the expelling of the 1 student ws...cause he prolly got his ass beat at home for it...plus there ws 1 other good school in karachi..and he sure wasn't gonna get in there after getting expelled from anywhere...
as for the other stuff...yes it did although it did not kurb it completely, it sure reduced the occurences .
hell if it wasn't for the canings i think we woulda succeeded in killing our organic chemistry teacher...who had had 3 by pass surgeries and whom we used to BOO loudly around corners...only to be caned...but if we were never caned...we woulda done it every day instead of once every 2 weeks ;D

it ws an all boys school....
a common winter tradition ws "coat parade"
where if you were stupid enough to walk into a class room full of quietly sitting guys(should be a tip off right there)...during winter when we had to wear blazers...someone hiding behind the door blazer in hand ws gonna tackle you...pull the blazer over your head...trip you and then the whole class ws gonna proceed to beat the bloody crap out of you....till you got the blazer off..then everyone ws 5 feet away swearing that they were trying to defend you ::)

Yeps, this (above, Toxi's post, not the nouveau riche debauched socialist democratic nowadays antisocialbehaviour non-discipline I'll give you 20pc because I care crap) sounds realistic.
Toxi's sounds akin to a proper British education approx 20-30 years ago. Did me no harm and I bet Toxi is also 99.9pc sane.
And he can spell. But I bet I got a higher score in Latin and he was better at PE...
Reckon we got minus20pc for being a loser never ever. Because we were very very good. I got 94% in advanced French and 96% in Spanish after one year. Never went to Paris or Barcelona though.

i failed religion and history regularly...i mean seriously...who the fuck wants to know pakistani history :-\
yanno linds they changed the proper O and A levels to the GCSE O and A level...a few kids in japan commited suicide (also india) and they figured it ws too tough...now its only slightly harder than the SATs..which in my opinion r a joke..compared to the old O levels...hell at 15 i ws walking into 300 level math and physics classes(uni of maryland) and beating the pants of the asian kids that were 18 and 19 ;D (tooting my own horn..but true)

Meant to say you'd be better at PE and obviously also RE, but didn't think anyone would understand...
I was taught to memorise the Bible & I'm not even Catholic...
Fortunately my family emigrated to Canada when I was young, just after I'd passed my 11plus. I'm proud to say I quit school at 16. I have no A or O or GSCE anything nor NVQ levels. Got a job instead.
I did though apply to and got accepted on a part-time evening Economics Uni course when I was 18 and took the grant money and ran to the shops and bought a stereo with massive speakers...

Most of the punishments associated with "Proper English education" are a result of institutional laziness, stress conformity over understanding, and miseducate some to believe non-conformity equals being smart.
Someone with a talent or capacity to develop young minds wouldn't need violence, humiliation or otherwise. Teaching is about more than stuffing information in a brain.

That's very true , and add parents that exhibit a poor role model . TV , video games , and the like are raising children at home.

Having kids doesn't mean people know how to parent.

Having kids doesn't mean people know how to parent.
There should be some type of assessments made on parents , yearly if not more often .
If they make people take driving tests why isn't there a certain criteria to be upheld in order to keep your children ?
If a parent can't spell , do math , or know right from wrong behavior why should they be allowed to raise a child without being taught themselves ?

first...u cant even begin to comprehend the culture of a brit school....we took it in stride....sometimes trying to stifle laughter...not your American punk crybaby students...so u r merely commenting on MY experience and actually assuming your assessment is correct? how do u know it ws non conformity? were u there?lol..yeesh
thats EXACTLY why i went to college at 15 beating the pannies of most 'smart' people in class
thats EXACTLY why quite a few students from my class went on to MIT on scholarships
thats EXACTLY why we did calc in the 9th grade ...and getting a 94% WAS A B!
sorry jake...it ws tough...and better..a 9 grader from the O-levels program can rape the SATs...
deal with it :-\

I've never quite understood how "I'm bigger than you!" teaches kids poop about how to act as people.
Toxy,
So you'd have no problem with being beaten, shamed or humiliated now in the pursuit of smartness?! Getting caned doesn't make people smart, FFS.
