You're really hung up on this "America's Team" shit still, huh? Maybe Cowboys and Saints will have chance to buttfuck each other in playoffs

About fucking time.

Whats the new rule?
Both teams get a chance on offense unless the team that wins the coin toss scores a TD on the first possession. If the team that wins the coin toss scores a field goal on their first possession, rather than the game ending, the other team gets one possession. If they then kick a field goal too, it turns into sudden death. If the score is still tied after 15 minutes of OT, then it becomes sudden death.
Here's the ESPN story: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5022064
This is great, maybe all the "hurf durf if u want to win then play defense" apologists will stfu now. Sudden death was so stupid and completely changed the dynamics of the game in OT. This isn't perfect but it's at least a little better imo.

No, they didn't! It ain't the Saints fault that the Vikings can't play DEFENSE.
Apparently, some folks have a short memory. Did you forget that just two weeks prior, the Packer-Cardinals game went into overtime?
The Packers won the toss; BUT THEY LOST THE GAME. Why?
Despite giving up points, left and right, when it came crunch time, the Cardinals' DEFENSE stripped Rodgers of the ball and scored....GAME OVER!!!
If you lose the toss, PLAY DEFENSE!!!
This rule change is STUPID!! Why is it that people can't play football, anymore?
-
Should have kept it simple....both teams get at least one possession.

Don't bet on it!! All the whining about the team winning the toss always winning the game is BOGUS, especially given the 2009 stats. If I'm not mistaken it was 54-46, as far as percentages go.
Again, go back to the NFC Wildcard Game, between the Packers and Cardinals. The Cardinals didn't win the toss, but they won the game.
The NFL keeps getting wimpier with each passing year.

Bullshit. What they need to do is play one more 10 minute quarter. These overpaid fucks should shut their mouths and play. Letting a kicker nail a 50 yarder is a lame way to lose in OT.
Problem is OT in the playoffs is not that common, there's been 14 games in a long time that went to OT in the playoffs and the team that won the coin toss is only 7-7. It's in the regular season that there's an issue where the team that won the coin toss won close to 70% of the time.

They play one 15-minute quarter in regulation and the quarter continued, until one team scored.
I remember one of my favorite games back on 2005 (Bucs v. Falcons). The Bucs won the toss but fumbled the kickoff deep in their own territory. The Falcons recovered and were in FG range. But, the FG got BLOCKED. Then the BUCS drove down the field, only to miss a FG.
That game went down to the final 20 seconds, before Matt Bryant kicked the game-winner.

No, it's not. I just mentioned that earlier. This past season, it was 54% of the time that the team that won the toss won the game. And, in a lot of those games, the winning team didn't score on the first possession.
What Hoge said was that, 70% of the time, OT ends in a FG.
I think this was a big mistake. Sudden death brings up the intensity of the game, especially if you're on defense. And, that's what supposedly separates the NFL from college.
Take the greatest comeback in NFL history (Bills-Oilers, '92). That went to OT. The Oilers won the toss. But, Warren Moon threw a pick. The Bills got in FG range and drilled the game-winner.

Personally, I think this is all about the NFL's lovefest with Brett Favre. Had this happened to any other QB, we'd hear nary a peep about changing the rule.
Funny how nobody complains about sudden-death OT, when their teams WIN in such a format.

Huh? I don't think it has anything to do with Favre. If that were the case, they should be re-writing the cheap shots to the QB rule to apply to him, as well as Brady.....he got killed in that playoff game.

I mentioned Favre, because of ALL the complaints about the NFC title game, which Favre LOST. Again, nobody cried about sudden-death OT, when the Cardinals beat the Packers, two weeks earlier (even though the Cardinals lost the toss).
And, it just so happens that Favre has lost two NFC title games in three years (granted, Favre and the Packers won the toss in that one).

if peyton had been successful on that driver where he got picked off, we were heading for a super bowl that would have been decided by a coin flip, most likely.
that would have been a nightmare for such an awesome matchup, brees and manning.

Not really!! Again, see the Packers-Cardinals game, during those same playoffs.

if that thing was 24-24...penalties (killing any Indy drive) in OT would have insured a saints win. people really believe the nfl was going to pass on this story line (katrina, the feel good story, we donated 30M to keep the team in town, america's team ::), etc) finish for the saints. FIX.

Two games, with major offensive fireworks, went to OT in 2009 playoffs. It was a 50-50 SPLIT. Packers won the toss but lost on a turnover and defensive score. Saints won the toss and scored on their first possession.

I've heard Packer fans complain about a facemask on the play where Rodgers coughs up the ball., allowing Dansby to score the game-winning TD.

nope...there is no legacy, greatness, mega-ratings or story in that game. who cares? try elway winning his first superbowl with an obvious clip which sprung Terrell Davis for the winning score, 28-21. refs turned ahead big time on that one. FIX.

This is 100% correct. The new system is better than the old one at least, but I don't know why they can't just keep playing the game the same exact way for a little longer, like every other major sport.

MCWAY you are exactly the kind of "durrrr then play defense urf urf urf" idiot that I'm talking about. The NFL did not change their rules because of BRETT FAVRE BRETT FAVRE BRETT FAVRE and Vikings fan sour grapes. I am not a MN fan by the way, I just hate sudden death in football. They changed it because sudden death is a terrible system that completely changes the dynamics of the game. 30% of the time the team that loses the toss doesn't even get to possess the ball in overtime and you get great games like NO-MN decided by the toss-winning team driving 50 yards and kicking. If you don't see a problem there then I don't know what to tell you.
Ideally they would just play another 5 or 10 minutes or whatever and I don't see why this cannot be done, but the new system is an improvement at least.
THIS!
Saints defense played great in OT, pitched a shutout!

And, you are exactly the king of amensia-stricken poster, which I described earlier. The 70% stat refers to the number of OT games that end in a FG.
The actual stats ARE: From 1974 to 2009, there have been 445 games. 240 have been won by the team winning the toss (54%); 188 have been won by the team losing the toss (42%) and 17 have ended in a tie (4%).

You forgot that JUST TWO WEEKS PRIOR, we had the Packers-Cardinals game. Losing the toss didn't keep the Cardinals from winning. And that game had EVEN MORE OFFENSE than the NFC title game did.
Guess what!! When crunch time hit, the Cardinals DEFENSE made the play, stripped Rodgers of the ball, scored on defense and won.
And you also DUCKED the fact that, this past season, it went 54-46 as far as teams winning the toss on OT going on to win the game. If that weren't enough, of those that won the coin toss, several DID NOT WIN on the first possession.
Ideally they would just play another 5 or 10 minutes or whatever and I don't see why this cannot be done, but the new system is an improvement at least.
Saints defense played great in OT, pitched a shutout!
This isn't an improvement at all. Nothing puts more pressure on the game than knowing that it's really do-or-die.
If your team's sorry defense can't make the save, TOO BAD!!!
The Cardinals defense got shredded all game long in the Wildcard round.....BUT it managed to get the win, when it mattered most.
-
Of the 445 games played in OT (with sudden-death rules) 310 had each team possess the bal at least one.....THAT'S SEVENTY (70) PERCENT OF THE TIME!
Only 135 times (or 30%) did the team winning the toss score on the first possession.
In the 2009 season, there were 13 OT games: 6 of those were won by the team THAT LOST THE COIN FLIP. And 2 were won by the team that won the toss BUT DIDN'T SCORE on the first possession.
-
stats aside.... if ONE great super bowel is weakened by a few short passes and a chip shot field goal, it would suck.
this is a good rule. Field goals suck, anyway. They should just end them, and make the teams go for the TD every time.
-

What part of DEFENSE don't some people understand? There's no weakening of the Super Bowl, if it were to go sudden death. Man up and stop your opponents or you lose.
You could just as easily have a Packer-Cardinal scenario, where the team that wins the coin toss turns it over and the defense scores.
And who can forget Matt Hasselback of the Seattle Seahawks in that 2003 playoff game against Green Bay? He proclaims that he wanted the ball, because he and the 'Hawks were going to score. Next thing you know, Hasselback gets picked off by Al Harris, who took it to the house....GAME OVER!!!
-
There's another doozey that I forgot.......How about the Panthers-Rams from those same 2003 playoffs.....DOUBLE OVERTIME (in sudden death rules)!!!
-
Here's perhaps the longest game in NFL regular season history that DIDN'T end in a tie.
-
