I have windows XP still, can't do that.

You should look into getting 7, its not as resource hungry as vista was. I used xp for a bit then ended up going the linux route for a few years and now I'm dual booting 7 and ubuntu.

Got 5.9 too

4.8...graphics letting the side down on that one

I had a similar score, I just put in a gtx 260. I haven't oc'd anything on the system yet, I'm thinking I can hit 3.5 on the quad and oc the ram and vid card a little bit, just need a tad more cooling.

GTX260 aint a bad card i doubt you'll need to overclock with a card like that?
i think a bigger fan is definitely order if im going to Over Clock, processing speed is good tho, and i have a spare ram slot so theres plenty of room to expand and play about.

I'm planning on buying a new laptop, does anyone here have anything good to say about the Nvidia GeForce GT 230M graphics card?

You're absolutely correct, I have no need to overclock, but its fun to do. I'm debating throwing 4 more gigs of ram in and booting my o/s off the ram, the computer would be insane then. I got a pretty good deal on the 260, 150 bucks. Of course I had to buy a new power supply for it, but now I can sli and what not. What are your specs?
2.9 amd quad
4 gb ram
1.5 tb hdd
gtx 260
bluray/dvd burner

It depends on what you plan on doing with your laptop. If you plan on gaming, a better card is probably not a bad idea, but if you just want to surf g/b, check email and watch movies its more than enough.

It's that bad, huh? Damn.
I'm not really into serious gaming but I do play COD 4, Team Fortress and Trackmania occasionally. I know it's very difficult to answer but how would you estimate that this card can perform when playing say COD 4?

max details on cod 2 = 28 fps... so you can forget it for cod 4...

it's not for gaming. it's for surfing and watching dvd/xvids/blurays.
why play video games on a laptop anyway.

thats not a bad set up you got at all!! i do the best with what money i got!! Im trying to upgrade whenever i can, depends if and when i have the time and money.
2.1 amd Phenom triple
4 gb ram
500gig HD (though i have a 500gig external which i also use)
GT220 1gig DDR2 (which really isnt special at all, but i can run most things on it pretty well, have two monitors running out of it with no glitches or slow down, but will definitely need to be overclocked in future, or maybe run it in tandem with another card when i get the spare change)
DVD burner...I'm questioning whether paying £70 for a BD drive is worth it, But i love Blu Ray!!

I wanted a comp that I could game and use as an htpc and this computer does both pretty well. I just finished putting it together last night, I think I'm done fucking with it for a while.

Does aa stand for Anti-Aliasing? I dunno if I'm going to use it or not since I don't have a clue what it does.
I plan on playing with whatever res the laptop has and on my external 22" 1680x1050 screen.

So what would be your recommended minimum for a laptop? A desktop comp is unfortunately out of the question since I'll be traveling a lot soon and I need a new laptop. If it's way too expensive with a top-of-the-line gfx card then I'll just have to make do with something more mediocre.

What are you trying to spend and how big a screen do you want?

Around 1400 bucks and a 15,6" screen. I've been using a 17" laptop for three years now and I enjoy the big screen and all but it's just a pain in the ass to haul around when traveling... and the damn thing sounds like a fucking jet engine.
-
I love my new computer, especially the HD 5850 XXX edition lol.

LovemonKey dont spend insane amounts if money on a laptop with good gfx. Just buy one Cheap for work/getbig/movies and grab an xbox and connect it to your monitor and play on that. Its the best way nowdays i guess.

No sorry it doesn't appear to be readily available in europe.. I do have the option of buying my laptop in the states but it's going to be a while before I get there. Thanks though.

Lol, the good old days.

I've been looking around and found a Sony Vaio 15,5" with i3 processor, 4gb ram and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 gfx card. The gfx is better than geforce 230m from what I can tell. All this for roughly 1000 bucks which is not bad. There's gotta be a catch somewhere.

mines all in Arabic so you wouldn't understand it.

Ok so megabump on this post. I'm currently posting from the above mentioned computer and I'm really happy with it. It has pretty spectacular gaming performance actually and it's low on fan noise and the keyboard is smooth as hell to type on. Only downside is that the screen could be better, the viewing angles are not optimal and it lacks color saturation which is kind of critical if you intend to do any photoshop work. Oh well, I'll just have to use my 22" screen for that.
A lot of performance for the money though.
