Thinking of the ideal dog and using the animal planet dog breed selector the best dog should have the following attributes:

-Able to tolerate hot and cold weather.
-Low grooming maintenance.
-Bold and confident.
-Extremely quick to learn.
-Trainable to tolerate other animals.
-Moderate level of affection without being obnoxious.
-Moderate energy level.
-High exercise requirements,
-Playfulness unimportant.
-Medium to large size.

Considering these traits the best dog should be a Beauceron.

Irish Wolfhound. Combination of biggest and tallest. There is one across the street from me. If I see it I will snap a photo

Smart, affectionate, strong as hell and intelligent. "Gentle when stroked - Fierced when provoked". Thats their motto.

They hunted the wolves in Ireland to extinction. Where I live is the site where the last wolf in Ireland was killed in 1912. There is a gravestone erected for the Irish Wolfhound that killed it.

My old dobe, the brown one in the pic who died a year ago, was a male with big balls but I didn't look at them much. lol

Usually it's Pits you hear in stories of hurting children but it all comes back to the owner. I've had a dalmation as a kid and that dog was pretty nuts and viscous if it wasn't in a good mood. I've had 3 dobes and none of them were vicious with people, just other dogs sometimes.

This little dude below was definitely one of my favorite pets and just died a year ago also. Min pins are hilarious! They have such funny characters. Sure, they're annoying with the barking and acting tough but to me it was pretty comical. Nothing broke that dog. Even being the smallest in the pack he still acted like he owned everyone.

That's sad...anytime a animal, especially the wolf is hunted in a region till it's extinction is a grave day...
They did that with the Red Wolf here and wolves in different areas and cougars, bobcats lynxes as well in different areas here, now deer and rabbits and squirrels populations are off the chaine dude to not having significant number of predators to keep the population in check. So we have huntng seasons...

As far as the dogs, I'd say the Greyhound, whippet, Doberman, AMPBT, Staffy, Bull Terrier, and the miniature bull terrier. My apt complex does not allow most of the breds I listed, or have been pictured so far, so one has to have a a "safe" dog-retriever, some type of hound, a mutt, or some "mop" toy dog...I didn't see miniature bull terrier on the list, so I'm gonna ask.

You hear stories all the time a bout german shepherds ripping the necks off children.

Nope, never heard that before. Are you serious?

Border Collie Mutts!

My dog 'Holly' when I was growing up.  Very sweet and clever.

Kind of like #1 but brown and white.

I've had german shepards, they are very smart and loyal. They do shed alot
so you have to wipe down and vacuum everyday. I have a bischon now, great little
dog and they don't shed.

Best Family Dog

The American Pit Bull Terrier

The APBT is one of the sweetest, most loyal, and affectionate dog you could ever meet. Pit bulls have been in existence for hundreds of years. They have been used for a variety of things but unfortunately, mostly known for dog fighting. Sadly, the fabulous pit bulls throughout history have gone unrecognized and unappreciated by most. These dogs were the ultimate family dog for years, and still very much are in our society today. Contrary to popular belief, the Bulldog type dogs (this includes pitbulls, staffs, american bulldogs, bull terriers, staffordshire bull terriers, etc.) all of these COMBINED make up less than 1% of dog bite in this country annually. Unfortunately, they have become a media target and when one of them does anything, it is reported, and typically reported incorrectly so they can make this breed appear to be vicious.

These dogs are bred to be the most loyal family companion you can find. They are in fact true, loving, loyal family companions. They are also often used as working or service dogs. There are many PitBulls in this country today that are used for Search and Rescue, Narcotics, Money, Cadaver, Bomb, seeing-eye dogs, and any other forms of service dogs. All of this aside, pit bulls are amazing family companions. When fostering or owning a pit bull, you will see that.

They are a dog that will typically follow you into any room in the house, go for hikes right beside you, go swimming, go for car rides, snuggle on the sofa, sleep in bed under the covers with you, welcome and accept any stranger into your home, and when properly socialized, they often love to play with other dogs! They love to play fetch, they love agility, any competition they LOVE. This is the ideal family pet. They have a superior tolerance of children, they are typically extremely gentle, they can match a child's energy level, they will do any family activity you can think of...All they want is to be with their family and show them how much they love them...Many, including myself, rank this dog as one of the top family pets.

Thanks. I did research the breeder and purchased both of them from her.  Google Doberman Di Ravallese if interested.

I agree, shame when any animal becomes extinct.

In our lifetime we may kill off the panda. Strange to think!
