Flight lands in Denver, man in custody
Wed Apr 7, 10:48 PM
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A United Airlines flight from Washington landed safely in Denver on Wednesday night and a passenger was taken into custody after reports of a possible disturbance on the flight, U.S. security officials said.
ABC News, citing federal law enforcement officials, reported that U.S. air marshals subdued a Qatari man who authorities say tried to "light his shoes on fire" on United Flight 663 from Washington Reagan National Airport.
The plane was surrounded by security vehicles at Denver International Airport. ABC said authorities identified the suspect as a diplomat in the Qatari Embassy in Washington.
"TSA is monitoring an incident on board United Airlines flight 663 ... after receiving initial reports that a Federal Air Marshal responded to a passenger possibly causing a disturbance on board this aircraft," the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement.
On Christmas Day 2009, a Nigerian man was arrested for trying to set off explosives hidden in his underwear on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
In December 2001, Richard Reid, a self-admitted member of al Qaeda, was subdued on an transatlantic flight diverted to Boston. He had been attempting to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes. Reid pleaded guilty to eight counts related to terrorism and was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.
This is such a BS attempt to get people all riled up. Look at the time Reuters posted this online. Yet they choose to leave out half the story and talk about an incidents from 9 years ago. Hardly responsible journalism in my eyes... suggestive journalism perhaps, but no where near responsible or professional imo.
The guy was smoking in the bathroom. Later back in his seat, when someone made a comment about smelling smoke, he sarcastically cracked "he had tried to set his shoes on fire but they wouldn't burn". That's when everything snowballed and fighter planes were sent out to escort the plane to Denver. The guy apparently was pissed off at the extra scrutiny and has an attitude of "F-U". He also has diplomatic immunity so he can't be prosecuted for saying he was trying to light his shoes on fire.
This whole thing appears to be 'much ado about nothing'.
