The Quetelet Index (BMI) was devised as a tool to analyse populations, not individuals, it lacks both validity and reliability in that respect. It can be very inaccurate.
Didn't know the other index: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponderal_index
Neither index is good.

My doctor uses BMI and is an idiot. Mid summer I was at my leanest and he weighs me for my physical and says that I'm overweight and need to drop 30-40 pounds as he looks at his BMI chart. I knew he is going to mark that shit down and report it to the insurance company. He never took into consideration that I carry muscle and workout. The funny thing was a couple months later I start getting these eating well guides from my insurance carrier. Now the fuckers think I'm some fatass for my height weight not considering muscle mass. The BMI has a baseline and any eight above it is considered fat weight and not muscle.

My doc is actually pretty with it...he told me that I could stand to lose a little weight (which I probably could) but that with my frame and size i will always be considered obese on the BMI...he also told me that you only live once and there is so much good food out there why diet haha
