Barney Frank calls for 25% reduction in military budget
April 1, 2010 By Conor
Congressman Barney Frank
I hadn’t actually intended to write anything remotely serious today, but I think there is just too much going on for me to fully enjoy a day of April Fool’s revelry.
For starters, I spent the morning at the Greater Boston Chamber’s Government Affairs Forum, where Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) unveiled his new planned effort to seek a 25% reduction in military spending. The Congressman said that his effort was aimed at reducing the budget deficit, and he had allied himself with Ron Paul and the Cato Institute.
Frank says his proposal would not be necessarily aimed at our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but at reducing our military presence in other parts of the world where it may not be needed any longer.
The basic idea Frank put forward is that our current military operations are still too focused on Cold War and WWII geography. He noted that we still have a military base in Germany, and wondered aloud who we were actually protecting the Europeans from.
“I do not understand why Europe needs the U.S. to protect it,” Frank said. “The time has come to tell the European Union to defend itself.” He added, “We are putting up missiles in Eastern Europe to defend Romania and Poland from Iran. Iran doesn’t want to launch missiles at Romania and Poland.”
While he acknowledged that there are bad people in the world, he said it should no longer be the duty of the Pentagon to serve as, “the world’s military reserve.”
I think it’s a very interesting proposal and topic for discussion.
What do the Beaconeers think?
-
this is dangerous... barney frank gets the Ron Paul revolution kids to get excited about him, and it helps the dems.
-
Can't say I completely disagree. The EU isn't living in the shadow of the USSR with the spectre of a thrust to the Rhine and total collapse anymore.
But the missle shield talk was dumb. The shield isn't in Poland or Romania for the reason of protecting those specific nations.
But yes, spend the military budget on protecting America, not Europe. As long as a cut doesn't curtail our ability to project power and bring a massive amount of force to bear at any time in any place...I'm cool with it.
I don't want a Clinton military though. If this is what they are aiming for....no way.
-
Ron Paul has a long history working with Barney Frank and the two are on the same page on many issues and introduce many bills together.
I like Barney Frank a whole lot and am glad there is at least one Republican in congress that does as well.

Ron Paul has advocated 50 percent reduction initially if he were elected and further reduction as the years go by as needed.
I don`t think many Republicans would be on board with that. That is one area where I support Ron Paul.
Correct me if I am wrong, but you don`t support that much of a reduction as per your previous post, do you?

Learning how to communicate without formatting is a true skill and one few make much effort to hone. To be able to communicate with clarity simply by the words you choose and how you choose to use them without relying on bolding, font size, caps or colors is the true sign of a skilled communicator.

Completely agree.
-
what is the military spending as a % of US budget?
What about compared to domestic things?
I wonder if the people screaming about him cutting the military know how many bases we actually have compared to other nations.
-
I would not disagree with cutting international military budgets.
-
Completely agree.
I Disagree given the poor comprehension skills and the lack of attention displayed by many on this board. I doubt most read an entire article let alone even understand what they are reading. Highlighting helps these challenged individuals.

No it doesn't. It shows that you aren't very confident in your ability to make your point and that you probably aren't right very often. It's pretty primitive.
Using large font, bold, color, etc. are much more effective when used sparingly.

I am not highlighting my article, somebody else`s. I am confident that the author is making his point, however I am NOT confident that you and others posses the ability to read an entire article and understand the main points.
Also, Can you please link me to the rule book on internet highlighting? Where did you derive the authority from and would like to read the rules. Thanks.

Authority = life experience and common sense.
Also, it's much more effective to think independently instead of relying on out-of-context quotes by others.

I don`t think you have much authority if that is your criteria. Sorry you own personal biases and prejudices are not an authority as you claim.
Furthermore, I was pointing out a fact to which we then can discuss. I have seen you do it as well. There is nothing wrong with posting factual articles and especially ones that include the entire context.
So you admit that you just made up the rule book on internet highlighting borne out of nothing more than your own personal prejudice/bias?

lol. Apparently, you don't understand the distinction between providing information and/or discussion pieces by way of articles (me) and using select portions of articles and video clips to try and argue various points (you).

Uh, I ALWAYS post THE ENTIRE article with a source and a link.
You, not so much. Have a look at your Clinton Donor Thread. You didn`t post the entire article as I do. :-\

So you admit that few people want to read your posts? Formatting text is okay as long as you don't overdo it, but you more than over do it. Just keep your posts interesting and people will read them.
As for a rule book on document contents, did you not take professional writing in college? Did you go to college? Have you ever developed professional web contents for commercial websites? Do you see professional websites display exaggerated text formatting like you do? They want visitors to read the contents of their website just as much as you want people here to read your posts, but unlike you they don't rely on excessive bolding, font size, caps or colors.

I don't agree or disagree. If you need other people to think for you, that's your business. We all have to deal with whatever our strengths and weaknesses might be.

1. People will read my posts or they won`t. I have no control over it, but the best I can do is post the entire thing and highlight some relevant points if necessary.
2. Writing and Literature are very dear to me. Writing courses in college were a joke. The St. Martins Guide to Writing (if you went to college you would know what this book is) is pitiful. I still have all of my books and not a one can make you a better writer. As Gore Vidal says, "If you have to go to school to become a writer, you aren`t one". I wonder if Shakespeare could have written better if he read the St. Martins Guide to Writing. :-\
3. I do see MANY, MANY, MANY websites displaying exaggerated writing. I can`t name one that does not. 240 is a web designer, if you look at his pages, all are VERY bold. Go to Microsoft`s website, Youtube, CNN, wherever and you will find BOLD DRAMATIC FONT. Advertisers especially know the value of doing this. There is a little thing called Information Process Biasing. You should look into it. I doubt that you will, but I`d be more than happy to post about it. You may find it interesting. Also research Edward Bernays. You may get something out of that.
4. Much to your Dismay, There are no rules or rulebooks for internet highlighting. Sorry. :-\
-

Explain how posting a Primary Source in relation to a topic discussion equates to somebody automatically "thinking for you". That makes no sense whatsoever.
Ron Paul DOES NOT think for me, yet I posted himself talking on a specific issue as to not further the myth that often surrounds him.
How does that make Ron Paul my default switch to any decision making processes?

You talk like someone who never went to college, or someone who did go to college some and then dropped out.
If you don't care whether or not people read your posts, then why do you insist on using excessive bolding, font size, caps and colors to tell people "look at me, look at me. I'm here, I'm here. Please read my post, please read it!"?
Microsoft, YouTube, CNN do not rely on excessive bolding, font size, caps and colors like you do. If you can't tell the difference, then there is no hope for you.

1. How do you make such a bold assumption without any facts or evidence? Besides, how does someone "talk" like they have or have not been to college or "talk" like they have been but dropped out? Can you clarify how you determine this and what prompts you to do so? Just curious, does Bill Gates sound like someone who has been to college but dropped out since that is in fact what he did? If so, what about Bill Gates gives that away. Surely you must have an answer since you have made up your own criteria for judgement. Please answer.
2. I do not care who reads my posts or who does not. People will click if they want or they won`t click.
3. As I stated earlier: I am NOT confident that you and others posses the ability to read an entire article and understand the main points. Perhaps you may not even have the time. By using the bold feature it enables a quick slice of pertinent information to be conveyed. It also sets that particular piece of information apart as informational process biasing is rampant on this site. I can`t count how many times people on this site "read" an article and miss the entire intended meaning or blatantly deny the facts and evidence that may have been contained therein. Highlighting helps stop this from occurring as it calls attention to a particular point that may have gone unnoticed for whatever reason.
The fact that I highlight things has NOTHING to do with myself. I don`t see how you convolute it as an attempt of self-aggrandizement. It simply does not make sense.

I bet you also complain about the other person with less experience than you who got the job, promotion or salary increase only because he/she has a bachelors degree and you don't. I bet you also bring up Bill Gates in conversations to justify you not going to college or dropping out of college...wait a minute, you just brought up Bill Gates.
Bill Gates and a few others are the exception and not the norm. You are no Bill Gates.
It's okay if a person chooses not to go to college or chooses to drop out, but please spare me the anti-college education rants!
I was simply making a comment/observation about your excessive use of text formatting and pointing out that it is not only annoying, but it is not helpful either.

This isn`t about me, this is about YOUR judging criteria in which YOU made up totally on your own volition. I only brought up Bill Gates because you claim you can detect if someone dropped out of college by they way they "talk". That was YOUR claim. So to test your claim, I would like to still know what about Bill Gates reveals that he dropped out of college? How can you tell? I can`t, but you say you can to which I want to understand how you think it is possible. It doesn`t have to be Bill Gates, it can be anyone, I just used an example of a public figure who is in the spotlight. Pick anyone of your choosing. Can you please answer?
Your assumption about me completely wrong, therefore I know your "college litmus test" is complete bullshit. Personally, I wasted thousands of dollars that I wish I hadn`t for some courses and especially when I lived on campus. At least my family had the money to pay completely out of pocket so I don`t have any loans to pay back, but a waste of money nonetheless in my opinion. I am not anti-college in the least, but to think that it is the end all to education is just plain ignorant.
-
Show some humility you wack job, Nazi saluting, swastika wearing, bi polar, duplicitous douche, it'll do you some good.
Humility in regards to what? Your very post is ironic. Do you realize this? I do realize irony is an abstract thought process that you may not be able to grasp but I think it was at least worth noting.
-

This explains everything. If I was your parents/family I'd send you to the NorthWest Territories where I'd make you smash rocks with a rubber mallot for 5 years so you'd appreciate the money that was spent on your sorry ass. No wonder you advocate socialism with furor.

Great damn post bindare! Serious, spot freaking on!

My Grandfather was a Socialist and was locked up for dispensing Anti-Hitler Pamphlets and for possessing and distributing the works of the Socialist Rosa Luxemburg. He was eventually let out and forced to serve in the German military to which he immediately sought capture by the French. He then spent 5 years in a French POW camp after the war.
My Jewish side, my Grandfather was a Socialist/Capitalist who started the World`s Largest Television and Record Cabinet Furniture Manufacturing Corporation.
He even had Full Page ads in Life magazine, the most sought after for businesses, in the 50s and 60s.
Here is one of his ads.

Spot on.
TA you sound awfully insecure. Criticizing the value of formal education is what's plain ignorant. And BD is right: show some humility already. You think way too highly of yourself. There are some very smart people posting in this thread (excluding me) and I doubt any of them are very impressed by your arrogance.

Exactly. Many of us have differing opinions and sometimes we are strongly passionate in how we present them but Adam is so arrogant that he shuts people out completly.

I disagree totally with the perceived value of our educational system. If you don`t criticize it, you will just end up with mediocrity which is what we are displaying, especially in regards to Science and Scientific understanding. I do realize that college is not meant to be the end all and that to really be versed in a subject or an area, its going to take a whole lot more than just basic schooling. You will have to spend more time outside of school than inside to truly understand any topic. Lets face it, 120 credit hours hardly make anyone qualified in anything. I can literally count on my hand the few truly valuable classes that have been somewhat worthwhile. I assume you have been to school. Have you ever been left with wonderment as to why you cannot finish a text book in the allotted time with some teachers disregarding them totally? Spending a week to cover Cell Replication is hardly enough to do it any justice let alone learn much of anything. Spending one day on the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln does virtually nothing to understanding why and how....
If you haven`t been to school Beach Bum, you may find yourself disappointed. Unless of course you are happy with not even scratching the surface of complicated subjects or not truly understanding the why and the how.
Humility in regards to what and to whom? I don`t think I am being arrogant in the least. Even if I were (to which I dispute) the only person that can make you feel inferior is yourself. Sorry if that is what has got you so worked up. I didn`t do it.
-

IF I recall, you and the others surely have on this thread.

That's a completely warped and inaccurate view of formal education. Of course you learn much by being in the real world and some of the smartest people I have known never went to college. But formal education develops critical thinking. It changes the way you approach problems and life in general. It even changes the way you read the news.
But . . . you also get out of it what you put in. If you meander through school in a drug-induced haze, you will not learn much and leave school not much smarter than when you began.
If you can't see how arrogant you are in your threads then I can't help you. The fact you think most people aren't smart enough to understand what you write (without the elementary school colors, etc.) speaks volumes.
-

No one can help you my friend. We have tried and Beach is doing a great job trying explain things to you but it is hopeless. Go spend time instigating fights on other sites, oh humble one.

What, if anything, are you trying to explain?

what is the military spending as a % of US budget?
What about compared to domestic things?
I wonder if the people screaming about him cutting the military know how many bases we actually have compared to other nations.

Promising thread derailed by people forcing TA to back up his cut and paste bullshit. We're not cutting military spending....ist funny Dems whine when factories are shut down and people are layed off..EXCEPT WHEN ITS IN THE DEFENSE INDUSTRY!...As always..typical douchbag lib ploy. U are all full of shit.

How about we END the welfare state and force these people to go to work building up and maintaining our military? sure it would take a lot of time, but we simply cannot have the welfare state and this current level of spending.

I don't support a 50% reduction initially or ever. But having a budget of over 600 billion + Wars is unsustainable. Over seas base closures, putting more responsibility on our "friends" to defend themselves or pay us to defend them. Tightening up the weapons procurement process would also be a good start.
The world still needs a leader that has the capability to project a large and overwhelming amount of power to any point on the globe. We need to keep that capability. I just don't think it should cost almost 1 trillion dollars.
Plus, a 50% reduction is unreasonable. Like HH6 said, everyone will sing a different tune when their factories are the ones being shut down and their constituents are the ones being laid off. The defense industry is also crucial in keeping or shrinking industrial base alive.
I'm sure cutting the skyrocketing welfare state might be a better place to start with the 50% reduction as the welfare produces absolutely nothing of value. It only leeches....yeah, that would make far more sense.

I don't understand. My assumption about you was that you were probably a college dropout, judging by your anti-college education ramblings and by the way you write. Then you say above that you "wasted" money in college, but you did not graduate? So you are a college dropout. So my assumption about you is correct. Do you live in your parents' house too?
No, I would not be able to tell that Bill Gates dropped out of college just by listening to him speak. That is because, unlike you, Bill Gates knows the value of a college education even though he dropped out of college because life presented him a rare, much better opportunity. Unlike you, Bill Gates does not think that a college education is a waste of money. Bill Gates is smart enough to know that he is the exception and not the norm. Like I said before, you are no Bill Gates.
I'm not trying to put you down for dropping out of college. You are the one putting yourself down for that. You come across as bitter and insecure with your anti-college education ramblings.

TA was given a trust fund and lives off of that.

Zero life experience but he's not SAMSON either.

I graduated in 2003 from UNC and then went back to pursue another degree. All a waste. Jezebelle also has 2 degrees and she finds them a waste as well. My parents are both dead so your assumptions are completely false.

Good for you! Good for Jezebelle! Sorry about your parents!
You are the first college graduate I know of who bashes his college education and considers it a waste of money. And that still makes you sound like someone who did not attend college or dropped out of college, even if you did graduate.
Bill Gates knows the value of a college education, and one of the many requirements for a job at Microsoft is a bachelors degree at least. And that is true for most high paying jobs out there, and many low paying jobs too.
By your logic, I guess you wouldn't have a problem trusting a guy who never went to medical school to perform surgery on you, or defend you in a court of law having never gone to law school. As long as he knows his stuff, right?

Its not that simple really.
Some of America`s best legal minds never went to Law School. I wouldn`t have hesitated to let Abraham Lincoln defend me.
I consider Clarence Darrow to be one of the greatest lawyers in history, yet he never graduated. I would have loved to have him defend me.
As for a surgeon, I would like to know success rates and length of practice first and foremost as well as any malpractice suits or board violations. To me, that is more indicative of skill than what school they attended.

Sorry TA - those people entered in apprenticeship programs for years in the place of formal law school.
Next.

Exactly. They didn`t graduate anywhere. They simply taught themselves. Especially in the case of Abraham Lincoln. He used to walk miles to get law books and then would read them voraciously.

Do you know what apprentice means?
-
I`d even let Old Hickory or John Adams defend me.
James Madison never got admitted to the bar but he is the principle author of the Constitution as well as The Federalist Papers. ;)
Alexander Hamilton, another one of America`s First Constitutional lawyers and co-author of the Federalist Papers never graduated.
I wouldn`t hesitate for a moment to let any of them defend me or the Constitution, the supreme law of our country.
-
Do you know what apprentice means?
Yep and it has nothing to do with College or graduating from College.

No, but there is a huge difference between being an apprentice to a master or learned skilled professional and simply embaraking on your own and claiming to be an expert on something.

Bashing college education while allowing a guy who never went to medical school perform heart surgery on you because he "taught himself" how to do it makes you two things: consistent and crazy.

IMO, college does a couple of things.
First, it's another 4 years of growing up and maturing.
Second, it teaches (or attempts to teach) critical thinking. Obviously, you won't get all the ins and outs of cell reproduction in one week. You're not supposed to. If you want to delve into that area in more depth, then pursue a degree in biology. But, for those who only need an introduction into biology, that's more than enough.
These core classes teach research methods, how to analyze data, how to think about issues critically, and often force students to express themselves in writing. Content is only one aspect.
Now I will agree with you that many individuals become learned without formal education. But, for the average Joe, like me, who needs credentials to get a job, advance, etc., it's invaluable.

college can teach you to recognize and capitalize upon opportunities.
the most motivated people succeed in life. Many motivated people choose college. Some dont, and still make good $, if they're motivated, or lucky.
