Day after training legs, I had a sore left shoulder/trap, so went and had a deep tissue massage.
Next day still sore but trained Chest and felt much better.
Next day I had this immense searing pain going from my left trap through my rear dealt left tricep.
I thought maybe the massage disrupted something, however I went to the gym pump some blood around the area as that normally helps. After warming up I went over to start my first exercise of barbell rows, put 135 which is my warm up weight, and when I started rowing the left arm, shoulder, trap just wouldn't contract.. it was like trying to row with the left side of my body being dead. This puzzled me as I normally work up to 265 for 8 reps.
So, I scrapped this exercise and went over to do some pulldowns.. same thing occurred - the upper left back area and arm were struggling to pull down a weight that was real easy. Screw this I thought and left the gym.
Over the next week I didn't go to the gym and I didn't do anything to agravate all of this but it got worse, really painful, so I went and had an MRI of the shoulder - nothing wrong with the shoulder, doc gave me a handful of pills - they didn't work.
Then had an MRI of my neck, c5-c6 herniated aggravating the nerve and two protruding discs further up my neck.
2 months later and the pain has gone but I haven't regained all the strength in my left side, I still can row shit, or lift anything, if I can curl 50 pounds in my right arm for 10 reps, I can only curl 15 in my left for the same reps. I've got this pain in my rear delt area but it's not the joint, and everytime I do chest it feels like my shoulder is going to dislocate or something, there no strength there in the back of my shoulder
I figure I may have to have surgery, like a spine fusion or something to be able to get back in the gym and train like before.
I've been training for 7 years and always had a weakness in the left side that has gotten more noticable over the last year, which makes me think that I injured it when I was younger.I've always trained smart in the gym, I know I didn't injure it in the gym
Has anyone experienced something like this before? And has anyone had surgery for a similiar problem? If so, were there any restrictions after full recovery from the surgery. I know Bob Chick had lower back surgery over 10 years ago, I'd be grateful if he could give some feedback on what his recovery was like.

i have a herniated disc in my lower back...right at waist line...i just tough it out
sometimes i will move just wrong doing the most simple thing, and a week straight of
shooting pain down my leg, sore glute on same side....few days later the inflamation
goes down just enough to get that herniated part off the nerve and i am fine
every once in a while i really hurt it and gimp around for weeks, but i have had it
for 17 years now so i am pretty used to it
best thing for prevention for me is keeping my hamstrings flexible so they don't pull
on my lower back...for you, not sure since it is so much higher than mine
most people puss out and get surgery, but it never seems to solve the problem

once again I don't know what I'm talking about but, personally I would look for something other than spine fusion or even surgery all together

YOU CANNOT TOUGH OUT A SLIPPED OR RUPTURED DISK. What you have to do now is lift right. Try every type of grip for pulldowns, go wide, then narrow, v bar, rope whatever and see what doesn't hurt your neck and stick with those. same as biceps, try dbs, but also try preachers etc... until you find a comfy groove. Bob mentioned that he never does rows. He likes to do seated exercises where his chest is up against a pad and does rows that way. Also look at doing revers rows where you set a barbell in a rack, lay under it and pull up in a rowing motion. Add weights to your chest or abdomen and pull up.
You need to stop your regular program and spend the next week tinkering with all sorts of exercises until you find the ones that work for you. Don't fight through pain, you will only make it worse. Train smart, use full motion, pause at the bottom and squeeze at the top and take advantage of proper form over simply adding weight.

Back surgery is 50/50 and i decided against it. I was told to have massages once a week and living by the ocean does not hurt either. ;) Swimming does more for my back then anything else. ;)

I visited many surgeons and they told me that it was 50/50 and maybe less. Back Surgery Varies person to person. ;)

I was never scared of the surgery part but just the opinions of the many people who have had Back Surgery. 8)

Yea, if my back gets any worse then i will opt for it. :-\ I cannot even give my niece piggy back rides anymore. :-\

obviously you need surgery to remove the fragments of the herniated disc pushing on your nerve canal causing weakness.
that is just my unqualified opinion.

I was at the gym about 2 months ago and just got done benching heavy and the inclining heavy and was fairly tired. A guy asked me for my business card. I told him I will get one to him when I am done. I go get one and he is on the seated leg extension. I lean forward just slightly to hand him my card and I feel just a little twitch. I knew something might happen so I got out of there. The next morning I was dead. I literally did not get back into the gym for 9 days. Having a bad back is really shitty. being overweight just adds to the problem

See if you read my post (which I know you did but to make you feel better about being a loser you have to attack me, if it helps you then great) but I had my injury back in 83 or 84. I weighed about 240 and I promise you 1000000000% I was in better shape and stronger than you ever will be at that size. So, your attempt to make it sound like my back is bad because I am fat failed badly. Now go back and work on a better "put-down" I know you have it in you (among other things)

You may have hurt your back when in good shape but if you leaned out you wouldn't put so much pressure on your spine by doing simple things like typing on getbig with your sausages for fingers. Did I hurt your feelings calling you fat?

I have a prosthetic disc in s1-l5. So far so good. Fusion seems to always be somewhat more risky than the prosthetic disc or just getting it cleaned out.

You may have hurt your back when in good shape but if you leaned out you wouldn't put so much pressure on your spine by doing simple things like typing on getbig with your sausages for fingers. I know being fat is not good for my lower back. But, I have lived with it for25+ years and it used to go out all the time from tying my shoes to opening my car door. The thing I feel the most right now is how weak my lower abs are. But for anyone to thing that only fat people get bad backs is dumb and that it can only happen to fat and or out of shape people. It can happen to the strongest

Your advice sounds like that given to a youth in the gym throwing weights around.
Some people can train with damaged discs, Ronnie Coleman did for years until he had to have surgery.
I don't need a lecture about how to train, I was asking for feedback on those who have had experience with a similar problem.
I do lift right, several people have approached me and said "Why are you lifting all these tiny weights and using machines" and when I've explained what injury I've had, they ALL say "It's not your form or technique, you couldn't have do it in the gym, I've seen you train" All my I have always performed perfectly.
The only bodypart that I can work effectively is legs, lower back and abs. Everything else is just trying to get a pump.
I'll be seeing the Neuro Surgeon tomorrow to discuss ways of resolving this.Let you know what develops from that.
