Title: Boxing vs MMA (first true test)
Post by: che on April 16, 2010, 06:22:50 PM
Ricardo Mayorga vs Din Thomas

-Both at  the end of their careers.

-Both beat top opposition:
                                      Mayorga (Vernon Forrest ,Vargas......)
                                       Thomas (Guida,Serra............)

-Mayorga pure striker (boxing) 0 ground game.

-Thomas well rounded fighter  (BJJ black belt)

It doesn't get any better than this ,LOL@ Mayorga trash talking.

I think Mayorga is gonna get blasted if he doesn't land anything within the first 5 seconds.

No THIS (below) was a true test. UFC4, when there were VERY limited rules and people were only trained in their own arts. Look at the poor boxer.

Great ... finally a world class boxer

I agree with "if it goes to the ground"

That being said we never saw a world class athlete / boxer in the ring... for the MMA fighter it's a gross mismatch as Mayorga can floor him easily. Plus he never got hit by someone that fast and accurate.

I don't think it's equal as they both start standing up : advantage Mayorga

Dude, if you felt like your gassed in the boxing match you're gonna be SHOCKED if you start wrestling.

Work out ASS of from now until the fight on your wrestling cardio... you cant train that just by running or a treadmill or whatever.

Im hoping you do good though, does the other guy have any previous fights?

Boxing is a brutal sport. Some of the best trained athletes on earth.  It is not a well rounded self defense system like MMA.  All these MMA champs would get killed in the boxing ring.  The same way boxing champs would get beaten in a MMA match.

Which is the best for the real world?  Hard core training with a concealed hand gun.

interesting.

but I'd put my money on the bjj guy.

I'm guessing armbar maybe choke within the first 2 minutes.

it sounds cliche' but Mayorga has a "puncher's chance"

however, Thomas has been training with Richardo Liborio since he joined ATT and Liborio is one of the greatest BJJ practioners ever

Mayorga is okay,  not a great boxer
Lacks good fundamentals and usually just relies on sheer aggression and power to beat his opponents.

that's why I think he would fare well

For example Mike Tyson would rule MMA because he comes out with a bang ...Lennox would get killed cause he is more technical

MMA favors the strong aggressive accurate starter until the first clinch  :-\

You can seea boxing legend missing the target , then clinch and game ova :(

Din's fights with Jens Pulver and BJ are two of my favorites of all time.  Seems like a really cool dude too.

Mayorga is hilarious.
