Title: What happened to the GNC show of strength?
Post by: Mussolini on May 02, 2010, 06:11:42 PM
If I remember correctly it gave out almost as much prize money as the Arnold Classic. Does anyone remember the exact breakdown of the prize money? Why did they cancel the show?

Thank you for your time.

well it has to do with GNC being scum of the earth

they love to rip off uninformed young bodybuilders, by trippling the prices of supplements

(and they do you a big favor with the "gold card" cause for 1 week per month the prices are only doubled) ::) ::)

but when it comes to brass tacks, they do not put their money where their mouth is and support the sport

they are just another one of the vultures making money off the backs of bodybuilders....  like flex, md, the weiders, ami, ect.........who are too fucking cheap to sponser a bodybuilding show

Prize money was $100,000 for 1st then the third year of the show they dropped it to $15,000 2 weeks before the show.

Added to that, bullshit decisions to get attention. That all killed it.

UN sung i agree overcharging is not great but it's a free market people can go anywhere. Esp. in the USA.

The reason being because the IFBB decided to raise it's sanction fee on them at the last minute. They probably figured that all of that money should go to the organization and not the competitors.  ;) I think that also they didn't want it to be considered competition for the Arnold and/or the Olympia.

Actually, thats incorrect.  The sanction fee was not suddenly raised in the 11th hour....they (the promoters) had sponsorship issues- i.e.- a nameless sponsor was supposed to come up with the money and bailed out in the 11th hour...

how many GNC stores are there now?

they are still fairly plentiful, there is always a replenishing market of people completely new to fitness who were told by some trainer or fit person at work to  get themselves a multi-vitamin and some protein

they think "where do i get that stuff"..."oh, GNC"

because they arent turned on too buying supplements on the internet yet, or how much or  ripoff GNC is

it s shame really

more and more are looking towards the internet right from the beginning though

you never see a GNc with anyone in it

all protein is a rip off.. they companies mark the price up astronomically.. some company who doesnt just want massive profits should come in and sell cheap protein and crush all the others (or make them lower there prices also)

thats what i would do (also get the protein into supermarkets)

why isnt there any mutimillionaire schmoes? you'd think some billionaire sheik from dubai would hold a contest over there and offer $1 mill for 1st place and crush the arnold and olympia

oh wait no contest is allowed to have more prize money then the OLYMPIA  ::)

If you are that big of a schmoe and that rich you are not going to sponsor a contest, you are just going to import the body builders of your choice and have them service flex and private pose for you behind closed doors.  And, yes, that does happen.  ;)

Don't know every exact detail but a credible rumor circulated that some of the local folks were NOT all that honest when it came to collecting ticket money and pocketing some??? Tammie Simpson of GNC may have ben pissed off dealing with a few unsavory folks within the NPC/ IFBB hierchy perhaps?
I do know that the GNC big wigs felt the show didn't give them the bang for the buck they wanted.

I stand corrected. However, I had actually gotten my original quote from "the horse's mouth" as they say.

I guess everyone will have their own version...

As horses go, I have none in this race.

Actually, GNC does support the sport by sponsoring numerous contests and competitors, including many NPC contests in California. I pretty much am sure that they have a booth at almost every California NPC contests out here. Also, the Olympia, the Arnold, and you will find out the GNC is a big sponsor in our sport!

As for the GNC Show of Strength, three contests if I remember correctly.

This was the results for the Men's Pro shows...
