Lawrence Taylor admitted paying for sex, court papers allege
Associated Press

NEW YORK — Pro football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor admitted paying for sex at a suburban Holiday Inn where police say he raped a 16-year-old runaway, federal prosecutors said today in a criminal complaint against the girl's alleged pimp.

The papers filed in federal court in Manhattan refer to Taylor only as "Client-1."

In the paperwork, authorities claim Taylor told police following his arrest yesterday that he had taken a car service from Newark International Airport to the hotel north of New York City to meet "Victim-1."

Taylor told investigators that after "engaging in sex acts" with the victim, he paid her $300 in cash, the complaint says. The man charged in the complaint, Rasheed Davis, had told the Giants legend that the girl was 19, the court papers say.

Taylor, 51, was charged yesterday in Suffern, N.Y. with third-degree rape and patronizing a prostitute. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, has denied the charges.

Davis was to appear in federal court today on a charge of sex trafficking of a minor.

The girl, who was reported missing by her family in March, met Davis at a Bronx bus stop two to three weeks ago. The federal complaint says she told investigators that the 36-year-old parolee offered her a place to live and a way to make money.

She said that Davis gave her Ecstasy and marijuana before causing her "to engage in multiple commercial sex acts" for prices ranging from $80 to $150. He advertised her services by sending cell phone photos of her and posting ads on Web sites, the complaint says.

On Wednesday, Davis sent the girl a text message in which he said he wanted her to have sex with "Client-1" for $300, the complaint says. When she refused, Davis assaulted her, drove her to the hotel against her will and waited outside while she had sex with Taylor, it says.

Late Wednesday and early yesterday, the girl sent text messages to her uncle saying she was in trouble. The uncle called police, who arrested Davis once he returned to the Bronx with the teenager.

Police believe Taylor used a middleman to arrange the liaison, but said today they hadn't identified that person.

Davis was sentenced in April 1994 to eight to 25 years in prison for first-degree manslaughter. He was paroled in March 2008.

Taylor anchored the Giants' defense and led them to Super Bowls titles in 1987 and 1991. He was selected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.

A 10-time Pro Bowler, he was the NFL Most Valuable Player in 1986 and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1981, 1982 and 1986.

The weight-loss company NutriSystem Inc. said today it had dropped Taylor as a spokesman because of his arrest.

At least the Rekers story has a tangent of political relevence since it involves the founder of a group that is trying to use their influence to affect legislation in our country (i.e. Rekers was paid as an "expert" witness by the state of Florida)

Dang LT.   :-\  I really hope he didn't do this, and there are an alarming number of false rape accusations.

Woman will testify in LT's defense
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- A woman has come forward as a defense witness in the sexual assault case against Lawrence Taylor, saying the 16-year-old girl who accused the NFL legend of rape never had sex with him, according to a statement from the woman confirmed Friday by Taylor's attorney.

The 23-year-old woman said in a sworn statement that she accompanied an alleged pimp and the 16-year-old girl to a hotel outside New York City where Taylor was staying. She said the teenager returned to the car with $300 in cash and said: "It was weird ... we didn't even have sex."

"He's innocent. She's lying. She wasn't raped," she said in the statement.

The statement was given to investigators working for the defense team and seen by The Associated Press. Defense attorney Arthur Aidala said he was planning to use the woman's testimony in the case.

The 16-year-old girl has never been identified publicly by police. The probe is being handled by the Ramapo police department, and Detective Lt. Brad Weidel said Friday the department had no comment. The Rockland County district attorney's office did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

The woman is a stripper who lived in a Bronx apartment with the alleged pimp, Rasheed Davis, and the girl. She said in the statement that she was with the two when New York City police arrested Davis and took the girl to a hospital.

The woman's account differs from those of police and of a federal criminal complaint in the case. Neither official account mentioned her.

The woman said in the statement that she waited with Davis for about 45 minutes while the girl was inside Taylor's hotel room, and that the girl knew she was there to meet the famous NFL star. Inside the room, Taylor rubbed himself on the girl, but they did not have sex, according to the woman's account.

"She wasn't sad, mad or anything like that," the woman said of the 16-year-old when she returned to the vehicle after being in Taylor's hotel room.

In the statement, the woman gave specific details of the teen's trip to the hotel and back. For example, she said that she got to the Holiday Inn in Suffern, N.Y., via the Tappan Zee Bridge from the Bronx, and described what the teen was wearing.

The AP saw the woman's statement on the condition that she not be identified. The defense said she feared possible retribution after she provided the statement on Monday.

Her account was first reported in the Daily News of New York and The New York Post. She said she has known Rasheed Davis for a while, but had only recently met the 16-year-old.

Taylor, 51, was charged May 6 with third-degree rape and patronizing a prostitute. Aidala has denied the charges. Davis was charged in Manhattan federal court last Thursday with sex trafficking and was being held without bail. His attorney did not comment on the charges.

Mark Lepselter, Taylor's business manager, said Friday he was glad the witness came forward.

"We are pleased that this witness chose to come forward to support Lawrence Taylor's version of the events of that evening," said Lepselter, president of Maxx Sports and Entertainment.

A federal criminal complaint filed against Davis recounts the victim's version of events and makes no mention of a third person in the vehicle at the time of his arrest in the Bronx. Authorities said the teen did not know who she was meeting at the hotel room.

According to the federal complaint, Davis beat up the 16-year-old, drove her to the hotel against her will late on May 5, and waited outside for an hour while she had sex with Taylor. The witness said Davis did not beat her.

The girl sent text messages to her uncle saying she was in trouble, police said. The uncle called the NYPD, who arrested Davis once he returned to the Bronx with the teenager. The girl provided information about the hotel where Taylor was staying and was taken to a hospital where physical evidence was collected, police said.

The woman said in her statement that she did not come forward initially because she worried she would get in trouble because she knew the girl was underage. But she said she came forward because she felt bad.

Rasheed Davis was sentenced in April 1994 to eight to 25 years in prison for first-degree manslaughter, a charge stemming from a fatal shooting. He was paroled in March 2008.

Taylor anchored the Giants' defense and led them to Super Bowl titles in 1987 and 1991. He was selected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-time Team.

A 10-time Pro Bowler, he was the NFL Most Valuable Player in 1986 and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1981, 1982 and 1986.

The weight-loss company NutriSystem Inc. dropped Taylor as a spokesman because of his arrest.

Taylor is due in court again on June 10.

Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor Indicted on Rape Charges
Published June 23, 2010
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Pro football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor was indicted Wednesday by a suburban New York grand jury on charges of third-degree rape and patronizing a prostitute.

The indictment follows his May 6 arrest at a Holiday Inn in Ramapo, New York, where prosecutors say he paid a 16-year-old girl $300 to have sex with him.

Taylor had been charged previously in Ramapo Town Court, but the indictment transfers the case to Rockland County. He is scheduled to appear July 13.

The former New York Giants linebacker also was indicted on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, and sexual abuse and criminal sexual act in the third degree. He faces up to four years in prison if convicted. He has denied the charges.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said the 16-year-old told investigators that she had been verbally threatened and physically assaulted by a pimp who drove her 26 miles north to the hotel where Taylor was waiting.

"One of the most effective ways to target prostitution is to go after the johns," Zugibe said. "This indictment underscores our serious commitment to prosecuting those defendants who create a market for the region's growing sex trade."

Taylor's attorney reiterated his client's innocence Wednesday.

"Mr. Taylor and his legal team made a strategic decision not to present any evidence to the grand jury, including him testifying or any witnesses in his defense," said defense attorney Arthur Aidala.

The evidence includes sworn testimony by a 23-year-old woman who says she accompanied the accused pimp and the 16-year-old girl to the hotel where Taylor was staying. She said Taylor did not rape the girl. The teenager returned to the car with $300 in cash and said: "It was weird ... we didn't even have sex."

The statement was given to investigators working for the defense team and seen by The Associated Press on the condition she not be identified.

Taylor's longtime business manager, Mark Lepselter, said they were looking forward to the legal process "and Lawrence being able to move forward with his life."

A federal criminal complaint filed against the accused pimp, Rasheed Davis, recounts the victim's version of events and makes no mention of a third person in the vehicle at the time of his arrest in the Bronx. Davis has been charged in federal court with sex trafficking.

Authorities said the teen did not know whom she was meeting at the hotel room. The girl sent text messages to her uncle saying she was in trouble, police said. He called the NYPD, who arrested the suspected pimp once he returned to the Bronx with the teenager. The girl provided information about the hotel.

Taylor pleads not guilty to rape charge
By Jane McManus
ESPNNewYork.com

NEW CITY, N.Y. -- Former Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor entered a plea of not guilty Tuesday morning in a Rockland County Court to charges of statutory rape and solicitation stemming from a May 6 arrest in a New York hotel.

The rape case against Lawrence Taylor, shown on his way into court Tuesday with his wife Lynette, will continue next month. His attorney said the case is headed for trial in 2011.
Holding his wife Lynette's hand as he walked to a waiting car after the hearing, Taylor was asked if he looked forward to his day in court.

"Hopefully it don't go that far," the 51-year-old Taylor said.

Taylor is accused of soliciting a prostitute in a case involving a 16-year-old runaway. According to prosecutors, the alleged victim was able to lead police back to Taylor's hotel room in Suffern. The man alleged to be the girl's pimp also has been charged with unlawful imprisonment, assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Taylor's attorney, Arthur Aidala, disputes the claims against his client, and said the case is proceeding as he expected.

In the gallery, before his case was called, Taylor smiled, looked around and said, "It must be a slow news day." He also said to a friend, "You're not playing golf today, are you?"

After the plea was entered, Rockland County District Attorney Patricia Gunning asked for a six-month extension of the order of protection first issued, to keep Taylor away from the alleged victim identified as C.F. As he did in the first court appearance in May, Aidala protested the order.

"It is Mr. Taylor's position that this person is an absolute stranger to him and he doesn't know who this person is," Aidala said.

"Then he should stay away from this person he doesn't know," the judge in the case, William Nelson, said as he granted the extension.

After some wrangling, Aidala had Taylor sign the order. The next court date is set for Aug. 3, but the Hall of Fame linebacker won't have to appear again until Aug. 24. Aidala said the case is on track for trial in the winter, and the next few months will be used to examine the case against Taylor, in terms of physical evidence, how he was identified and the statement he made the night he was arrested.

Aidala plans to challenge the evidence against Taylor. Aidala said Taylor would challenge the girl's identification of him. Aidala also said the defense would look into whether all statements made in the case were voluntary.

"A plea bargain is possible at any time in any case," he said in response to questions. But in this case, "There is no plea bargain. There is no offer."

Even if Taylor did not know the age of the girl, New York state does not recognize this as a defense in such cases. Aidala has said that there will be evidence presented that will bolster Taylor's side of the story. Aidala would not detail the way he plans to defend Taylor.

"We are getting more and more evidence coming in literally on a daily basis, so our strategies and our theories continue to develop," Aidala said.

One potential witness is a 23-year-old woman who told defense investigators that she heard the girl say after meeting Taylor, "It was weird. ... We didn't even have sex."

Mark Lepselter, Taylor's longtime friend and agent, said Taylor has been deeply affected by the charges. If convicted, Taylor would face four years in prison.

"He's been very subdued for the past two months from the day back in May," Lepselter said. "I haven't seen him like this. Mentally he's trying to get through it."

Bail in the amount of $75,000 was continued, and the court is still in possession of Taylor's passport.

The court was prepared for an influx of media, which included local media outlets and national tabloids like TMZ. The small courtroom could not fit all the reporters who attended the hearing. Cameras were not allowed, but a court sketch artist was present.

Taylor was dropped off in a black SUV at 8:58 for the 9:30 a.m. hearing. He was wearing an olive blazer, black slacks and a diamond earring in his left ear. As he was asked questions simultaneously, including one query as to whether he was guilty, Taylor turned and replied, "No, grow up."

Taylor led the Giants to Super Bowl titles in 1987 and 1991. He was the National Football League's MVP in 1986 and Defensive Player of the Year in 1981, 1982 and 1986. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

Lawrence Taylor seeks dismissal in NY rape case
By Associated Press
Tuesday, December 7, 2010

NEW CITY, N.Y. — Pro football great Lawrence Taylor says the rape indictment against him should be dismissed because police did not have a warrant when they arrested him.

In a wide-ranging motion, Taylor’s lawyer is seeking to at least suppress any statements Taylor made when he was arrested and to rule out any evidence taken from him.

Taylor, 51, was expected in court Tuesday, when state Supreme Court Justice William Kelly could discuss and rule on the motion.

The former NFL MVP is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old prostitute in a suburban New York hotel room in May. He allegedly paid the Bronx runaway $300. He has pleaded not guilty to third-degree rape, patronizing a prostitute, sexual abuse and endangering a child.

Defense attorney Arthur Aidala’s motion alleges that Taylor’s arrest violated his rights. It says he was "alone, sleeping in his hotel room" when police entered without a warrant and without his permission.

Rockland County prosecutors were expected to address the motion Tuesday. The district attorney’s response motion was due last week but the office said Monday it was not available.

Aidala’s motion asks the judge to dismiss the indictment, suppress all evidence, suppress any Taylor statements, prohibit the identification of Taylor at trial and prohibit any cross-examination of Taylor about any "past crimes or bad acts." It also asks the judge to examine the grand jury minutes because Taylor believes that will show "the illegality and insufficency of the evidence."

Court papers in a related case say Taylor admitted to sex acts with the girl but was told she was 19.

Such a sweeping motion, known as an "omnibus" motion, is often used early in a case by a defense team to learn as much about the prosecution’s evidence as possible.

Taylor, who led the New York Giants to Super Bowl titles in 1987 and 1991, was arrested May 6 after the girl’s uncle contacted New York City police. Officers from Ramapo woke him at a Holiday Inn in Montebello.

The motion says police "did not have a warrant based on probable cause to either arrest Mr. Taylor or conduct a search and seizure" and that the circumstances did not allow entry without a warrant.

"No lives were in danger, nor was the defendant’s escape imminent," it says.

Aidala claims that makes any seizure of property improper and anything Taylor said to a public official inadmissible, even if he was read his rights.

After the previous court session in October, Aidala said the case would probably go to trial but he would likely listen to any plea agreement offered by the prosecution.

His point was that either one was a political issue. Isn't there an issue, regarding how old this girl was? 15 vs. 16?

If it's the former, LT is screwed because it's rape, one way or the other.

If it's the latter, LT has a case and could beat the rape charge, if 16 is the legal age of sexual consent.

The charge is STATUTORY RAPE. So, the issue of force is IRRELEVANT, as legally she doesn't have the ability to consent to sexual activity. Nonconsensual sex = RAPE, pure and simple.

Correct.  Minors cannot consent to sex.

It has a bit of it, because there are people who think the age on consent laws should be lowered. But those are more on the state and local level.

Indeed!! The other political issue, as far as guys going to jail is concerned, is underage females who lie about their age.

Let's face it. There are 15 and 16-year-old girls with 22-year-old bodies.

True.  It's impossible to tell with a lot of them these days.  That's why a man should never have sex with a stranger.

I haven't seen any mainstream politician advocating in favor of prosititution or in lowering the age of consent

Lawrence Taylor to plead guilty
By Jane McManus
ESPNNewYork.com

Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor is expected to plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges in court Thursday, stemming from a May 6 arrest for felony statutory rape.

The recommended sentence is six years' probation. He could receive up to two years in jail, although his attorney, Arthur Aidala, said he believes Taylor will not get jail time.

Taylor plans to plead guilty to one count of soliciting a prostitute and a second count of sexual misconduct in having sex with a woman without consent. Since the victim in the case was 16, by law she was not old enough to give consent.

In New York, ignorance of a person's age is not a defense against statutory rape. The age of consent in New York is 17.

Taylor also faces a sexual offender hearing, which most likely will occur in a few months. This hearing is to determine if he must register as a sex offender.

Taylor was arrested early in the morning of May 6 at a Holiday Inn in Montebello, N.Y. Police said they were led to his hotel room by a 16-year-old runaway who had allegedly been forced into prostitution by Rasheed Davis.

Davis pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, while Taylor pleaded not guilty to charges of third-degree rape, patronizing a prostitute and endangering the welfare of a child. The rape charge carried a maximum of four years in jail.

At the time of the incident, Ramapo town supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence alleged that Taylor paid her $300 for sex. Taylor posted the $75,000 bail later that day.

Aidala on Dec. 8 asked Rockland County Judge William Kelly to dismiss the charges on grounds that Taylor's fourth amendment rights were violated when the hotel room was searched upon his arrest. Physical evidence, including condoms, was recovered in the search. Kelly denied the request.

Taylor led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles, in 1987 and 1991. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

Rockland County prosecutor Arthur Ferraro said on Dec. 8 that Taylor had been offered a plea deal which included six months in jail and 10 years' probation if he pled guilty to a felony, but he also would have needed to register as a sex offender. At the time, Aidala said the terms were unacceptable.

And it's done.  Probation.

Lawrence Taylor pleads guilty

Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges in court Thursday, stemming from a May 6 arrest for felony statutory rape. He will be sentenced to six years' probation but must register as a sex offender.

He also was ordered to pay $1,300 in fees.

Taylor, who was dressed in black from head to toe, pled guilty to one count of soliciting a prostitute and a second count of sexual misconduct in having sex with a woman without consent. Since the victim in the case was 16, by law she was not old enough to give consent.

Taylor's Highs, Lows

As Giants Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor's troubles off the field continue, ESPNNewYork.com takes a look back. Photo gallery

In court, under oath, Taylor admitted that he had sex with a 16-year-old and he said that he was aware that results of a DNA test identified him.

"She told me she was 19," Taylor said in court.

Sentencing is March 22. That same day, state Supreme Court Justice William Kelly will determine what level of sex offender status Taylor will have.

Taylor's attorney, Arthur Aidala, said he would seek to have Taylor's probation transferred to Florida, where the former player now lives.

An order of protection against Taylor also was renewed. Aidala protested the order of protection, arguing that the girl was a stranger to Taylor.

Aidala said the sex-offender status was non-negotiable but made it clear that Taylor wasn't a sexual predator and would not be labeled as such.

Prosecutor Patricia Gunning said the plea deal was acceptable in part because Taylor had assisted in investigations into human trafficking since he was charged.

"Lawrence Taylor was the end user in the market that creates more [sex traffickers]," Gunning said. "They need to be held accountable. It's a long fall from grace."

Another prosecutor, Arthur Ferraro, said outside court that Taylor "was of assistance in the field of human trafficking in several jurisdictions and with federal authorities."

Taylor did not speak to reporters after the proceedings.

"He could have taken a much more aggressive road but he decided it was in the best interest of he and his family and the young woman to put this behind him," Aidala said.

Taylor's business manager, Marc Lepselter, said that "sometimes in life you have to make the best of a tough situation. I think that's apropos in this case."

"Unfortunately in a lot of ways, this extinguished the positive strides he has made since 1998," Lepselter said. "I'm proud of how he handed it. I'm hopeful he'll be able to go forward from this point."

Harry Carson, his former teammate and fellow Hall of Famer, was in the courtroom and gave Taylor a supportive greeting when he arrived.

"I've always seen a distinction between Lawrence Taylor and L.T.," Carson said.

"The whole L.T. persona, to me that's an act," Carson said. "I'm here for Lawrence Taylor. I'm not here for L.T. ... Once he went through some of the stuff he went through, he realized that was a hindrance to himself and his family."

Former NFL star Lawrence Taylor sentenced to probation for sex crime
By the CNN Wire Staff
March 22, 2011

Along with probation, Lawrence Taylor is expected to be fined and forced to register as a sex offender.

New York (CNN) -- Hall of Fame NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor was sentenced to six years probation during a court hearing Tuesday after pleading guilty to sexual misconduct with an underage girl.
Taylor, who pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges in the case in January, will also have to pay a $2,000 fine, Judge William Kelly said.

Kelly will also determine which sex-offender level status Taylor is expected to receive -- which could range from low to high risk -- during a separate hearing set for April 12.

Taylor was arrested last May on charges of "improper sexual conduct involving an underage girl in a Rockland County hotel," the district attorney's office said. Prosecutors said Taylor paid the teen $300 after "sexual acts."

The girl, who was 16 years old at the time of the incident, denied allegations that she was a prostitute.

"I'm very upset about what Mr. Taylor did to me," she said. "I did not want to go to his hotel."

Lawrence Taylor cops plea, avoids jail 2010: Ex-NFL star's personal troubles

The teenager said she was glad Taylor had been prosecuted though disappointed that the former New York Giant won't receive jail time.

"He took something very special from me," she said. "I'm not a prostitute. I'm a victim, and I'm hurting."

Taylor entered a guilty plea to one count of sexual misconduct and one count of patronizing a prostitute in the third degree, both misdemeanor charges, prosecutors said.

He was arrested in a Ramapo, New York, Holiday Inn room on May 6, a few hours after the encounter took place, authorities said. Ramapo is about 30 miles northwest of New York City.
Ramapo police applauded a plea agreement Taylor entered into with prosecutors at the time.

"This department believes that the resolution reached in this case is fair and appropriate," Ramapo Police Chief Peter Brower said at the time.

"Mr. Taylor wants to publicly apologize to his wife and family and fans," said his attorney Arthur Aidala. "Mr. Taylor accepts responsibility for what he did and he did intend to patronize a prostitute. He did not intend to patronize an underage person."

Aidala added that Taylor was "deceived."

In July, Taylor's wife vehemently denied that the famous linebacker had sex with the underage prostitute.

"He didn't rape anyone. He didn't have sex with anyone. He didn't call a pimp," Lynette Taylor said on "Larry King Live."

Lynette Taylor told King that the girl snuck into her husband's hotel room because many people knew Taylor was in town for an autograph signing.

Taylor gave her $300 because she was going through bad times, Lynette Taylor said.

"So I mean for him, $300, here -- here is $300. Will this help you out any? It was very much that," said Lynette Taylor. "Yes, he should have told her to get the heck out of my room. But I cannot explain why men do what they do."

Lawrence Taylor reacts to sentence
ESPNNewYork.com

During an interview after he was sentenced to six years' probation on Tuesday, Lawrence Taylor made no apologies for visiting a prostitute.

Speaking to Shepard Smith on Fox, Taylor did say that he did not look for an underage girl. The victim in the case was 16 at the time of the incident last May. In January, he pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute to avoid jail time.

"That's not my M.O. I've been around kids and people all my life," said Taylor, a former New York Giants Hall of Fame linebacker. "I'm not the cause of prostitution. And sometimes I make mistakes and I may go out there, but I didn't pick her up at no playground. She wasn't hiding behind the school bus or getting off a school bus. This is a working girl that came to my room. And I don't know what her age was. I asked her age. She told me she was 19. It is what it is."

Taylor blamed the institution of prostitution for the fact that he ended up with an underage girl.

"It's the world of prostitution," he said to Fox. "You never know what you're gonna get. Is it gonna be a pretty girl, an ugly girl or whatever it's gonna be."

Or a young girl? Shepard asked.

"You can only ask," Taylor said. "I don't card them. I don't ask for birth certificate."

Taylor said he had "no beef" with the girl.

"I'll take my punishment like I should, but my problem is at home with my wife, so that's really the only one I have to answer to," he said.

How did he get in this situation in the first place?

"It happens sometimes," Taylor said. "I'd been on the road 10 or 11 days and I came in to town. Actually, I made a phone call to a friend of mine, and he made a phone call."

Taylor said he has used the services of prostitutes in the past, especially between 1994 and 2001 when he was not married.

"I'm not looking for a relationship. Hey, sometimes I look for some company," Taylor said. "It's all clean. I don't have to worry about your feelings. It's all clean. I'm not saying it's right. It's the oldest profession in the world."

But right or wrong, Taylor appears to not consider prostitution a serious crime.

"I guess you call it a crime," he said. "It's one of those crimes you don't think about. You never think you're gonna get busted because everyone does it until you get busted, and then it's more embarrassing than anything else."

Lawrence Taylor a Level I offender
ESPNNewYork.com

Lawrence Taylor's name will not appear on public sex offender registry lists as he was given Level I status in a Rockland County court on Tuesday.

Judge William Kelly made the determination after listening to both prosecutor Patricia Gunning and Taylor's attorney Arthur Aidala. He said that he didn't think Taylor was a risk to repeat his offense.

"I frankly don't think that is likely," Kelly said.

Taylor's Highs, Lows

As Giants Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor's troubles off the field continue, ESPNNewYork.com takes a look back. Photo gallery

Taylor was sentenced to six years probation after pleading guilty to sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute in the third degree. The former New York Giants star admitted that he paid a 16-year-old runaway $300 for sex on May 6 at a Holiday Inn in Ramapo, about 30 miles northwest of the Bronx.

There are three levels of sex offenders. Level I offenders are characterized as being a low risk to the public, while Level II are medium risk and Level III are high risk. People registered as the latter two have their names made available to the public, and authorities can go so far as to alert 'vulnerable populations,' such as those at a school, nursing home or day care agency, that an offender is living in their neighborhood.

Level I offenders in New York must register for a minimum of 20 years, while Level II and III offenders must register for life.

Taylor getting sex offender status comes on the anniversary of his entry to the NFL. On this date in 1981 he was drafted by the Giants with second overall pick.
