Very true. Most of them are black. It is not a racist thing. It is just the fact that most (not all) black athletes grew up poor or in lower income areas. Most have just one parent and so forth. They are blessed with athleticism and can use that to get out of the ghetto (for a lack of a better word). When you go from having nothing to millions it is rather dramatic and life changing. So the celebration begins! Everyone you know gets a nice present. In alot of cases mom or dad get a new house and car. Immediate family members get new cars. Your closet friends get a car and a Rolex. It gets out of hand fast. White athletes have the same problem but for some reason most are more discreet. And for some reason whites (in most cases) will seek out someone to help invest. But, then that ends up bad too sometimes. It is too bad these guys can't just be smart

Not to even come close in comparison but I traveled quite a bit in the 80's and I had a good time in 99% of the cities I went too. And living in Hawaii you will be surprised how many girls from other countries and states want to do a local guy. And in a few cases with me it was solely to get close to me so when they came to visit Hawaii again they could stay at my place.

You would think so but this isn't how it happens. My very first job (in television) was an Apple Computer commercial. Till then I worked at a refinery and painted houses. Well I got a check in the mail for almost $10,000 for that commercial. It was a national buyout that debut during the 1987 World Series. It was everywhere. I got so excited I went out and spent that shit in like a couple days. And that was nothing. but I just got so excited and thinking in my head that wow I can work for barely an hour and make this kind of money I'll be set for life. Well believe me that didn't happen. My close friend blew through $23 million in 4 years. Not one real good investment. Almost lost everything. You get caught up in the moment. If they would just take their time and have someone handle their financial matters that is trustowrthy then it would be different. Some of these guys hire their parents who are just as bad. It is simple until it happens to you. But in most cases it is because of the way they grew up

Ive never Ever been broke. Never been broke since I first got weekly allowence of 4.5$ a LONG ass time ago. When All of my friend were broke as pretty much every teen is when they're what 14-15 I was never.
My family didn't have alot of money so my parents never spent it on worthless shit so maby thats where I get my priorites from I dont know =)
But I actually say it proudly that I never been Completly out of money ever. Ofc more impressive if I was a father and had children to feed but still lol.

Many athletes and movie stars are more broke than most people realize, but musical artists especially have less cause to go broke because (if they signed a good contract) their music will continue to generate royalties for decades--especially if the artist wrote the music (ASCAP). Unfortunately, many young artists have bad contracts and most of the money they make goes to the producers/record companies: Toni Braxton an TLC are two good examples.
Many athletes are just big kids and they spend like kids with little thought to investment or scaling back their lifestyle to accommodate their present and (reduced) future income.
Anonymous lottery winners go broke for obvious reasons: they have poor money management skills, spend like crazy, and are drained by friends and family who leech off of them.

dont wholly agree with you but i have posted in the past that bling, baller, swagger, playa etc are financial death sentences in afro-american male youth sub-culture. they set the stage for a spending frenzy when large sums of money are involved.

I grew up in a poor, middle-class family, so we never had extras or fancy clothes and I rarely cared, except when the better-dressed welfare kids would talk shit.
Now I've got a big house - still paying on it, though - and I'm about to buy another, but I drive a 2007 pickup truck that I bought used and I wear cheap t-shirts and swishy pants every day. As a result of not wasting money on clothes and bling, I can afford to take the kid to the theater or to pro sporting events (to see jackasses like Jamarcus!) and we can ski whenever we want.
I'm the first to admit that my kid is spoiled, but there's no question that she craves success, even if she is not yet fully aware of what it takes to get there.

I'm glad someone raised the issue of actors and artists. It's ridiculous the amount of musicians that end up back out on tour every few years, because even though they've sold millions of albums and sold out arenas and stadiums all over the world, they've still ended up in the red.

A lot of those lotto winners make stupid investments like buying strip malls, 4 houses, giving away tons of cash to relatives and friends. Most of them just quit their job right off the bat and start spending.
Best thing to do would to just sit on the money for at least 8-12 months, continue working and not make any large purchases. Find a good financial adviser who will take the money and generate a life style that you can be comfortable with for the rest of your life. You could easily take 10 million and invest it wisely, keep your spending in check and have a comfortable life for decades to come. These guys are blowing through 10+ times that in just a few years, it's pretty amazing.

My dad's parents - who lived during the Depression - were ultra-conservative...only things they spent money on were real estate - in order to provide low-cost housing to the community - and one vacation per year. My grandfather did buy each of the grandkids our first cars, though, and they helped a little with college. When they passed, their two kids and the three grandkids all received a pretty significant amount of cash, and the kids got the land as well. My cousin immediately pumped a good chunk into a home improvement project and put the rest into his daughters' college funds and my sister applied hers toward her mortgage, which will save her tens of thousands in interest over the next 15 years. Meanwhile, even though I'm supposed to be the 'smart one', I haven't done anything with mine yet. lol It's just sitting in CDs, collecting like 1.5% interest. But because of that cash reserve, the bank is willing to let me get a loan for another house.
Meanwhile, my mom's mother and step-dad made WAY more money at their jobs than my other grandparents in their lifetime, yet died broke. It's a complicated story, but my mother and her sister didn't know how to take care of business, so the house their real father had bought for them ended up being taken by their step-dad's family. Thankfully my mom married into my dad's family. :) Her sister, however, was not so lucky. She was married to a fool who lived off her until he died. And then some 20 years later, she married another fool, and they recently lost the overpriced show house he'd 'bought for her' ::) outside of Phoenix. When I met him and he tried to impress me with 'what he had', I knew it was all bullshit and sure enough, 3 years later, foreclosure. Fortunately, she'd kept her house this time, so they had someplace to go. Unreal.

Residuals are the best. As you say you continue to make them as long as the show or commercial is playing. I moved to Hawaii with my only income being my residuals. A friend of mine back in 1985 or so told me he was bringing in more than $250,000 a year just from residuals. I have had a few times where I got a call from my old agent telling me they (company) are considering re-airing a commercial. Man that would have been nice. Unless you are a permanent cast member or at least having a re-occurring role you can as much or more money doing commercials. A day player on a series does not make alot of money even with residuals. You get your daily scale pay which is I have no idea now but it was around $500 for 8 hours so I know it is more now I am sure and then your small residuals depending on the show and if it continues to aire through reruns. The longer they wait to start collecting the more they get. Now in baseball it used to be you had to play a minimum of five years to be eligible. dumb f##k put all his money up his nose at north american prices. here some advice to those who become wealthy: shift a % of your assets to your mom if she legit like this clown's mommy...so when you all f##ked up...you can return to a comfortable home and your old bed room. why the f##k his mom got 81000$ house n 5700 in card debit? 10M$ and my folks got at least 1.5$ on lockdown for me in case of hard times.

That might be true but Scottie Pippen was known to never tip and was very cheap and its been reported that he is nearly broke. So I think its a crap shoot with many of these guys.

ok...i didnt know that but pippen did a mc hammer move. that gulfstream had to be a large % of his career earnings. mc hammer earned 33M$ and spent 20$M on a house he was stilling paying for when it was liquidated. :o
