Benched 3 plates a side for 10 reps.
Guy had hand on last rep though said he never helped.
Felt very pleased. Surely I am close to 4 plates a side bench now!
Not looking for pats on the back just very happy and wanted to share with my GB brethern!
-
great. my best is 4 reps with 3 plates. shoulder issues prevented me from going heavy lately though.
watch out with the heavy weights. the bigger weights the bigger the chance of injury!
-
Cheers dude aye I have been thinking that myself. As long as it is relatively light (6-12 reps) injuries are maybe a little less likely to happen.
-
::)

Rule of thumb is usually if you can get 10 reps with a weight you can get a single with one plate extra. You get 10 reps with 3 plates on your own and 4 plates for a single is well within your grasp.
Strong lifting Ursus, what weight d/bell are you using on d/bell bench,i`m guessing 140s for a set of 8-10 reps.

you rly think that? I have to disagree... even though 3 plates for 10 is RRlllly strong :P, I jsut don't think so... benching two plates for 10 = not 315
but maby 315 is allready so strong that it's another powerlevel, who knows... I couldnt' do it...

I don't do DB incline anymore. I am doing incline BB also though in teh coming weeks I intend to reintroduce them with only 105'2 as by that stage I am very tired and can't lift anywhere near what i could fresh.
I have done 130's on the incline for reps but it was a while ago. I am stronger now.
I would not bee too sure about that rule. Particularly with light weights or very heavy weights. For 2-3 plates a side it is not a huge amount out though.
-
Thats how its always worked out for me,and if you get a single rep with a weight, then increase it to 2 reps your maximum will have risen roughly 10lbs.so if you get 3 reps with 3 plates you will get 1 rep with 3 plates and 5kg,you get 5 reps with 3 plates you get 1 rep with 3 and a half plates, you get 7-8 reps with 3 plates you get 1 rep with 3 plates and 15kg,all the way up to 10 reps equals 1 rep with 4 plates.Keep in mind i`m talking euorpean weight are in kilos,so a 20kg jump each side is 40kg(88lbs),and thats why i say when you increase your 1 rep max by one rep your strength will have gone up 10lbs.
-
Shit I thought this was about Peanut Butter. Oh well good job on the incline. And keep doing heavy dumbells.
-
Will do Keith!
Did not expect a PB today at all. Went for it when I felt good. Uploading a video now if anyone cares.

haha me too. i was lookin for a good peanut butter discussion, as if you could have one.. congrats on the lift big irish bastardo
-
Nice liftin` bro.......congrats!!
-
Good lifting Ursus.
Regarding the "10 reps with N plates --> 1 rep with (N+1) plates)" thing, I've always found my ability to lift heavy depends entirely on how often I lift heavy. For example these days I hardly ever do a working set of less than 6-8 reps. When I try to do a weight that I should easily be able to get three or four reps with, it feels ungodly heavy. I think there's definitely something to be said for the neural adaptations that come with frequent heavy lifting.
-
just like you I repped 500 lbs for 13 reps today ... I don't have a video
listed Capt Retardo ... just tape it and post it on youtube ...

Hmm, interesting theory. I can do 3 plates for 10 reps on the bench, but I've always chickened out of putting a fourth plate on there just to try a single. It always seemed a bit beyond me but I don't know if its just purely psychological. Think I might try this out and get back to you to let you know if it works.
-
Well done, Goudy!
One of these days I might manage 2 plates myself.

I don't think he's "running" anything - Goudy has always said he's natural.

If you do,just do 3-4 reps with 3 plates, save some strength,do 2 reps with 3 plates and 5kg,a single with 3 and a half, same with 3 plates and 15 kg,and that set will give you an indication as to wether you have got another 20lbs strength left in you to go for 4 plates.

you are right ... I should ignore the tale tell signs and take his word for it

Cool - yeah I was thinking of doing something like this - I think doing a 90lb jump in just two sets is asking for an injury. Probably why I've never attempted it before.
-
All drugs.

That extra chromosome is coming in handy it seems.....

Good lifts!
Not to discredit you, but I remember in high school a kid that was 17 at the time do 315 x 10 on max day for football. He was a junior and I was a senior at the time. I was looking at his lift in utter effing shock. ...I haven't done any free weight pressing in a long time due to my shoddy left shoulder so anyone doing 3 wheels a side is doing something right.
-
this is all while eating <100 grams of protein right
if i remember correctly you had kidney problems...or was that someone else
315x10 is extremely impressive for a natural
-
If everything under 3 grams a week is natural, then yes, Goudy is natural.
-

I eat more protein now.
I eat a LOT more now though I think more intense training and more rest is contributing. Plus as I get heavier lifts become easier.
I actually done a set of 330lbs after it and man that extra few lbs made all the difference as I had not been doing low reps for a while. Every rep felt harder that I would have liked.
Not that this means much to any of you but I assure you and promise you all I am and always have been a lifetime drug free lifter. Whether you choose to believe this is entirely up to you.
-
why would you jump from 3 plates to 4 plates,if you never tried, 4 plates will crush you, no matter how much you can rep with 3 plates. doesnt work like that. why not try to add 1,25 kg plates every workout or every other workout, that will get you somewhere.
also i noticed something else! when a spotter hands you the weight for the first rep, your body doesnt know how heavy it is, so you get surprised and cant lift one damn rep, destroys the concentration, i like to take the barbell my self from the first rep, that way the mind and body know what its neceserry to lift that heavy weight!!!!
-
hmmm im working on a better bench myself, never cared for it, i dont go over 5 reps, for hardest set i do max 2 reps, gonna bench twice a week to speed it up!!
got weak wrists though, hurts my bench weight a lot!!
-

And I sell perfectly fine used cars. :)
-
I prefer when teh spotter gradually takes the weight off the lift out.
When it is dumped on you it can make light weights feel heavy.
-
for some people it works that way....
bench
I agree. Really everyone is differant. When I would get 12 reps with 225, I still would barely get 315.But then one of my buddies would do 225 for what looked like a hard 8 and do 315. Only one way to find out, slap another wheel on each side and go for it.
-
Yea some people have predominantly fast twitch muscle fibres etc. I have done 3.5 plates before after my benching and it was ok - though unless I am repping 3 plates for 1 or 2 sets of 10 I dont think I will get the 4.
Here is the vid.
-
Good lift for being natural. My best 315 for 8 or so. At a fat bodyweight of 225.
-
That video you posted years ago with some cool music and lots of lifting montages was really cool to watch when I was young. Good motivation. D5 was it called?
I am 250lbs atm so it aint all that impressive.
-
Why do people who spot put the hands on or near the bar when it's relatively light weight and it's probably not going to drop on the lifter's throat suddenly...They could just be ready and take it when the bar falls downwards.
-
Man, I thought you were going to lose those plates on the right side during your last 2 reps.
-

Natural, it's a good lift for sure. Even at that body weight. Remember, most people fear doing anything on their own. Hence gear and 2 spotters. It's a frightening thing for most to enter a gym and realize...I'm fucking weak. :D
Yeah, the lifting montage. When I used to train hard and eat better. A good cut.
-
Good video Ursus,i would guess you would be very close to 4 plates for a single if you just did 3-4 reps on the 3 plates and then singles on a 5kg a side jump just to test your strength one workout.
This guy has been aiming for 10 reps with 3 plates and then got his single with 4 plates (actually he got it on close grip first before regular grip),and you both look to have the same amount of difficulty on the last rep.
-
Natural, it's a good lift for sure. Even at that body weight.
At 250 pounds? Its an OK lift.
-
Very nice lifting 8)
Thought you were going to lose it on the last one though! ;)
-
Solid set. Judging by the vid, dont think you got 4 plates in you just yet.
-
I think I may have a hernia gonna call in to open surgery tomorrow morning.
If I do I wont be lifting for a few weeks after surgery so it is nice to know where I stand. I will try a true 1RM though before/if I do have a hernia and need surgery.

Unlucky. Last year I had pain in my groin that the physio thought might be a hernia, and to test for it he pushed his finger through my ball bag and into my pelvis. He then proceeded to probe and prod for a considerable amount of time. It was very, very unpleasant.
I was then sent to have my groin ultrasounded. While the old women scanned me, the physio held my penis down to one side to prevent it getting in the way. It was only afterwards that it dawned on me that I could have held my cock down myself. All in all, not the most dignified time in my life.

LOL
Mine is an umbilical bulge.
I also had a camera inserted up my dick many years ago to look inside my kidney. It hurt to pee for weeks after. Not dignified for me either as an 18 year old to think I was lay passed out in a pair of socks whilst a doctor held my wab and shoved a samera up it..

Haha, any story the involves having something shoved down your Jap's eye automatically toptrumps all other stories.
That being said, my mate (genuinely my mate, not me) went to see the Medical Officer where he was based because he was pissing blood. He says he doesn't know what exactly happened, but 10 minutes later he was stood in the M.O's office with his trousers around his ankles, the blinds pulled down and the M.O's finger up his arse.

Shit I thought this was about Peanut Butter. Oh well good job on the incline. And keep doing heavy dumbells.
wise words from Keith here... My bench goes up purely due to hard dumbell work...
Good lift Goud
-
Injry to the right arm or shoulder goud seems to be struggling on that side also I'd say use a thumbless grip better strength less stress on the forearms well my joints are small very small so if I use a full grip I feel it all the way through my forearms
-

Absolutely. I love dumbbell work. You get much more of a stretch too. Anyone who has trained with me or seen me train know I do FULL reps and never half reps. And with DB's you can go that much more deep and squeeze at top. You get that natural movement too. I always seen my strength go up when I mix in the DB's. I also do the thumbless grip. I have always done it this way though. I can't even remember if I ever done it the other way. It is just natural for me. I do the same with the DB's. I do know in my head I don't have to worry about using any kind of grip to hold onto the bar. I just rest it in my palm. By the way Meso you always look good.

your gym looks like the salvation army thrift store or a homeless shelter.

wsup man thx for the compliment ... On the subject of dumbells and barbells I think dumbells are a lot harder to do which is why you won't see most guys doing them but you will see the small big old young skinny and fat on bench press because it's an ego thing and you can get a spotter to pull the weight even you can't get on rep by yourself... Dumbells are hard and hard to ego spot on .... So slot of guys stay away from them because they will have to lift the true weight they CAN manage... I did some heavy dumbell presses today myself... Superior to barbells IMO
-

???
From just what I can see of that gym. I would rather train there then any 24 Hour or center like that. I love that kind of gym. NOW that would get me in the mood.
-
All potatoes. Good work JG
-
some things I notice that my brother does who benches in the mid 400's.
- no fear ...4 plates is a mental thing for a lot of people, and you cannot be afraid of it.
- shoulder blades pulled back and down
- squeeze the bar hard
- lots of heavy shoulder work
- lots of food ;)
dumbbells are a problem b/c most gyms dont go above 100 lbs dumbbells. if you are benching close to 400, then you will need a much heavier dumbbell to challange yourself.
my bro goes under the screen name "the wall" on here. he doesnt post much, but you can send him a message if you want some tips. he knows a lot more about it than me.
good luck goudy.
and your brother is natural?
-
At 250 pounds? Its an OK lift.
He's tall and has long arms, it's a good lift. Short dudes try to discount the short arm thing but its true. Rodney Roller tried saying it was bs and he went up to Ben White who's 5'8" and some other dude who was 6'2" and all three had the same arm length. Rodney's 5'4" and the same length arms as a 6'2" guy, HAHA! Nice try midget.

Awful technique.
All that time in the gym and you still don't know how to bench.
Drop the weight back and start again. That was just ugly.
-
If you think you can do better NZ post a vid. I will try to match or beat it.
You are clearly lb for lb stronger than me as you look quite skinny but are strong. You are NOT stronger in terms of absolute strength though.
