I had a buddy who bought a Harley and slipped and dropped it within the first 40 minutes... 4K in damages.

Was terrible to watch.

about a year ago my dads friend got his first motorcycle at 60 years old....the dealer had to deliver it to his house because he had never ridden one......him and my dad went riding that day, and he forgot to put his feet down and fell over at a red light...

the next day, he ran it into a brick building and killed his goofy ass......

My IT guy at work just took a major spill last week; apparently some car cut him off and he went over the handle bars.  Four broken ribs, shattered elbow, dislocated shoulder (ouch!), and major cosmetic damage.  He is out of surgery now and will survive but will be months on the mend.  I hear his wife won’t let him bike anymore.  We’ll see.

Bay same type of thing happend to a friend of mine, and I asked him, when you are well are you gonna ride again. He said fuck yea, his logic (makes sense to me), people get in horrible car accidents and they drive cars after they healed so whats the difference
Title: Re: First ride on new Harley Davidson goes horribly wrong.
Post by: BayGBM on May 19, 2010, 07:54:39 AM
I think there is a difference.  I think one is much more likely to be (seriously) injured on a motorbike.  The reality is you are much more vulnerable than when riding in a car.  Other drivers often do not see bikes and the casual, careless things they do while driving are much more likely to harm you when you are on a bike.  I feel very secure in my car: six airbags, side impact beams, at high or low speeds my car feels like a tank.  Of course, I don’t want one, but I have no fear of collision when I am in my car.  I never feel that way on a bike.  Of course, different people, have different risk tolerance.  For some people the risk tolerance goes down a notch once you get married.  And it may go down a lot more one you have children. :-\

Perhaps. But talk about a coinky dink, had to meet pops at the harley shop earlier, his new street glide is getting new pipes. I met him there to drive him back to work, well my pal that I posted about was there with yet another harley. He was telling my dad, how he flew at least 100 feet and in a wheel chair for a few months after the accident. CT has no helmet law, but you bet your ass I wont ride without one

Bay,

When you ride, you give up vulnerability for maneuverability.

It's a trade off... You can be more injured on a bike, but you'll have a better opportunity to avoid accidents on one.

TU, true, easier to go around a bike where in a car, not so much.

Everyone I know who has owned a bike with one sole exception has been in an accident with them...now granted most are dumb asses who have a habit of doing shit that they shouldnt be doing but still. That being said Id still like to own one some day for riding on the weekends and just for shits and giggles.

Yea, its USUALLY guys on the rice rockets, sorry but that is all I seen. Not once in my life, have I seen anyone on a Harley or chopper doing crazy shit (not saying it doesn't happen).

LOL most have been on rice rockets but not all I think its more the dumb ass mentality that got them in trouble than anything else...one or two have run from the police, one popped a wheelie with another friend in front and didnt know he was turning and clipped his back wheel(no helmet)...couple though werent doing dumb ass shit just other drivers werent paying attention, my friends uncle died when an 18 wheeler changed lanes and didnt see him...

I think if I owned one Id only drive it on the back roads around here and up in the country area, I think it would be alot of fun.

I'm not entirely sure... but it "appears" that he just doesn't have the skill to ride something that powerful yet.

If you were 16 and had unlimited funds, would you be able to handle driving a McClaren F1 or a Bugatti Veyron? Doubtful... You'd end up in a tree.

Same thing with Motorcycles... too often, because the bikes themselves aren't "that big", people go out and buy bikes that are far too powerful for them.

It looks to me, from just a glance, that he grabbed too much throttle and couldn't back off the power properly, ended up losing the front end a little and couldn't turn away from the car.

I agree TU. My dad got the new street glide, NO way could I ride that thing. I tried just to get it off the stand and said nope. The 15th anniversary fatboy he got. Is just right for me. Cannot wait to hit the road riding it this weekend. A tad nervous because I just got my motorcycle license. But I'm riding with pops and a few pals

Let me klnow how it goes.  I'm looking at a Harley Street Bob blacked out matte finish.

I have been riding since I was a kid, so I ride decent sized stuff... Usually liter class bikes, but I don't do anything bigger... I certainly don't need something like a Hayabusa to do 200+ MPH on the street... I have had my bikes up to high speeds, but I stick to that shit on tracks from now on... At least if I low side something on a track day, I'm not hitting another rider or a car.

that is a great Bike 3333. I was looking at a used one about a month ago, but had to buy a new car instead. Glad my dad kept the fat boy, thought for sure he would trade it in when he got the street glide. I think he kept it so Id have a bike to use, because not gonna extend myself with a car payment AND bike payment. Here is the street bob i was gonna get, not matte but I love it

As fun as riding a bike looks (and probably is), I will hardly ever set foot on one outside of a quick ride to the corner store and back-even then I will try to avoid it.

I've known far too many people on bikes-great riders too- that have been seriously injured.

And my former roommate & his story is all I have to remember to quickly remind me to say "Fuck no."

True, I'm pushing her to that but her folks are going to kill me since I am already blamed for her getting her CCW and becoming a gun fanatic.  She already has 4 guns and counting.

I told her once she gets good on the Volusia I will get her a Harley as a Engagement/Wedding gift.

I've been in many car wrecks too, yet still drive a car.

I've told the story here before, but my roommate lost his right arm and 90% of his vision after an accident. Another friend he was riding with that night (his accident was later) lost his left leg and his daughter was killed. Another friend lost his life and his 12yr old daughter lost her right leg at the knee and watched her father die.

I could go on about all the different kinds of accidents I've heard about, but why should I? I'm not telling anyone else not to ride. If you do ride, just be safe and don't do stupid shit (I nearly took out a rider when I looked in my mirror and saw him coming up at about 80mph on my drivers side, so I went over to the right a little to allow him some more room and another rider who had fallen behind attempts to pass at a split second behind the other rider on my passengers side...I nearly killed one trying to save the other), and make sure you have control at all times.

As I prefaced prior...it's just not for me. But anyone else that decides to ride, it's up to them.
