Tim Sylvia, speaking Monday on the Sherdog Radio Network’s Savage Dog Show on whether Mariusz Pudzianowski was strong:
“Not at all. I’ve faced guys in the gym that were stronger than him. I’m not saying any of the guys I faced can out-bench-press him or pull a car faster than he can or throw keg barrels around like he can, because none of us can, but that’s not what we train for. We train to go against other human beings that are punching you, kicking you, kneeing you or trying to out-position you with their hips. I knew the strength was not going to come into play just because I knew it was MMA. It’s totally different when someone’s trying to grab you and you’re punching them in the face and kneeing them in the body.”
-
Marius burned all his energy trying stupidly to pick up the 350lb mass for the first 2 minutes.

Brock Lesnar would fuck this guy up.. grown man who wears his hat backwards LOL

LOL, no he wouldn't... Couture almost knocked Lesnar out, lol

Tim is right. The strength you develop from pushing weights in the gym is a lot different from the strength you develop from wrestling/grappling. That said, Tim won the fight not because he had superior fighting strength or skill. He won because Pudz ran out of gas in the 1st minute of the fight. And he ran out of gas because he has too much muscle mass.

Don't tell this to the schmoes of getbig. Everyone knows Yates would KO all of these mma guys. ::)

Hahaha, that reminded me of Milos' re-telling the Dorian gets KTFO story in vivid detail and how Dorian 'flew by him like a 747' after being hit so hard the air from the blow moved Milos back! lol
that was a great recount, heh

I'm pretty sure that didn't happen.

Randy dazed Brock with a few shots, so did Mir in their rematch with a knee...Lesnar's chin has not been tested whatsoever, I think this will be his downfall against Carwin

there's nothing more to ad dto this. End of line.

If you have watched metrx world strongest man. Mariusz was not good at grappling, they had a sumo type set up round, in a circle on the sand. Mariusz got pushed out every time.
-

I'm confused. You say that Randy and Mir both dazed him.....and then say he hasn't been tested whatsoever. If he was hit hard enough for you to think he was dazed, and went on to TKO both of them.....wasn't he tested just a little bit at least?
"Randy lit him up! Mir almost laid him out too!!! He's never been tested though."
-

bold part is totally true...
unbolded is totally false ::) his muscle mass had little to do with it, again there are plenty of fighters that have carried a great deal of muscle who had good stamina...

I meant against a really good striker, pure striker.. Couture is a wrestler and Mir is a jits guy..what I meant was that both had him dazed meaning that he looks to have a glass jaw which we'll find out in a month's time.

I am assuming that Tim Sylvia would beat GSP. Mariusz lasted seven minutes against Tim. So how long would Mariusz last against GSP? I am assuming that Mariusz would win. Unless I am wrong and the consensus is that GSP would beat Sylvia?

from what I saw I dont see any reason to think that mariusz would beat GSP lol

from what I saw I dont see any reason to think that mariusz would beat GSP lol
My reasoning is that Tim may not be great for his class, but he is still over 300 pounds and I am assuming that Tim would ultimately beat GSP. Am I wrong about that? Anyway, if Tim would beat GSP I would then assume that Mariusz would at the very least, last longer in a fight with GSP than he did with Tim, and have a much easier time taking him down as well.

I think I could agree that sylvia would beat GSP simply do to sheer size, but that doesnt mean pudz would...he would probably last longer with GSP unless he got knocked out or submitted but again I didnt see anything that would lead me to believe pudz would beat GSP...
Dont assume that just b/c one guy can beat up another guy he can then in turn beat up a guy he beat...if that makes sense. ;D
different ppl match up differently just b/c I can beat you up doesnt mean I could beat up someone you beat up...
-

Yes it does. ;D
I'm just sort of responding to the comments that strength means nothing or that strength means little in a fight. Let's be sure of one thing - Mariusz could kick the ass of 99% of men and a large sum of those specifically trained as well. The fact that he lasted seven minutes against a highly trained monster really says something to me.

Fedor Emelianenko destroying Tim Sylvia in about 30 seconds! Fedor is a beast. It would be cool to see him take on Brock. I don't think Brock will come out on top.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6BFzVznbb8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6BFzVznbb8)
Can you imagine Fedor vs Tyson both at their prime? I know it's apples vs oranges but still who would not want to see that?!
-
BTW, what happened to the feature where youtube videos can be played right in the thread? Now it is only a link! Is it because of youtube's desire to force advertising on people by making them go to their site?
-
There seems to be some confusion between strenth and coordination here . Bad balance and poor techneque renders strenth unusable . The POLE is a very powerful but uncoordenated .

Except, James "Buster" Douglas!!! ;D

yeah after mike tyson drank and didn't train properly, was miserable etc, sure why not. Mike tyson was having fun prior to the fight because noone took buster seriously.
:D
-
Dumb statement from a dumb guy.....obvioulsy Pudz is strong as a bull.....he was destroyed because MMA is more about balance, center of gravity and experience fighting top level guys.....none of which he has. But to say he isn't strong is just plain ruh-tarded.
-

That's Tyson's problem, not that of Douglas.
The fact remains that Douglas floored him and pulled off arguably the BIGGEST upset in sports history.
If you underestimate your opponent, more often than not, you get beat.
It's no different than in football. One team is (on paper, at least) better than the other. But, the better team commits multiple turnovers and gets the pants beat off them (i.e. 2008 NFC Divisional playoffs, Arizona vs. Carolina).

I wouldn't necessarily call that "dumb". It reminds me of a wrestling promo by the Road Warriors, aimed at Sting and Lex Luger. The Warriors claimed that Luger and Sting had pretty boy beach muscles; whereas they had fighting muscles.
I believe Silva's comments were along the same lines. Pudzanowski has strong POWERLIFTING/WSM-Competition muscles. But, he's not "strong" as far as MMA-fighting is concerned.
Or to borrow from Bruce Lee, "Atlas stones don't hit back!!"
;D

Love the Warriors reference, bro. ;D but I still think it's just a dumb statement to make....when asked if he's strong response should have been "of course, but its a different kinda strength in MMA." Not "he's not strong at all."

Douglas lost immidiately after tysons, and he retired right away... and he ballooned to 400 pounds of fat and money broke...
he didn't win the freaight train tyson, he beat a partyer and a sleeper... and that's it... he didn't out perform mike tysons best show.
-

But, that's not all he said. The rest of his statement qualifies and further explains what Silva meant. As he stated, Silva (and other MMA guys) obviously can't out bench or throw kegs or pull cars the way Pudzanowski can.
But, Pudzanowski ain't fighting a car or an atlas stone. He's fighting a human being. And, his punches lacked the necessary strength and/or explosiveness to subdue a guy like Silva.
-
In my life i've seen hundreds of real life fights. And in lots of the fights one of the guys looked like a bodybuilder with big muscles. And the muses don't seem to help them really. Usually the fit guy will beat up the beefy guy it seems.
-

I saw that, but he should have qualified that in his first response...."Yes, he's strong, but not MMA strong...." or something. Not "he's not strong at all." Regardless of what you follow up with, that just sounds dumb in describing Pudz.
-
2 low level fighters getting into a hugging match, wooo great to watch ::)
-

And that has what to do with the price of tea in China? It doesn't matter what happened to Douglas afterwards. He will go down in history as the man who handed Tyson's his first loss, BY KNOCKING HIM OUT!!!
Incidentally, the guy who beat Douglas....ALSO KNOCKED TYSON COO-COO and beat him (Evander Holyfield), another major upset as few gave Holyfield a chance against "Iron Mike".
he didn't win the freaight train tyson, he beat a partyer and a sleeper... and that's it... he didn't out perform mike tysons best show.
He beat Mike Tyson, PERIOD, during his heyday. No amount of revisionist history changes that. Tyson's alleged partying and sleeping is not Douglas' concern. As champion, you're supposed to be prepared EVERY TIME you put that belt on the line.
So, cease with the excuses for Tyson's being KO'ed.
-

he beat mike tyson but you're trying to hide the fact that mike tyson was a MESS in that fight... he wasn't at his best performance even close... that's a fact, yeah he beat mike tyson but at what cause. My pride would shiver if I knew that I didn't win the champion at his best... that everyone else got a chanse against mike tyson when he was at their best, but not douglas, he got a meth head by that time.
-

Then, you have a warped and senseless version of pride.
If I'm in competition, it's my job to be at my best (or close to it). I feel plenty of pride, when I do that. If my opponent is not prepared, that's his problem, not mine.
Am I supposed to apologize for winning or "shiver", because my opponent screwed around or whatever and didn't come ready to play? PLEASE!!!!
Part of being a champion is to NEVER underestimate your competition. If Tyson did and got knocked silly, the fault is HIS, not that of Douglas or anybody else.
Bottom line: James 'Buster' Douglas DROPPED Mike Tyson and took his belt.

No, my pride is the real thing, winning or losing without excuses, douglas will allways have the excuse, allways. He shouldn't feel sory for tyson ofcourse not but for himself, now he will NEVER know wether or not he would have lost or wone 2 years earlyer. not, even 6 months earlyer rofl.
winning someone on a handicap mode takes the honor away from victory.
-

:D
Yea, I am sure in every record book they will put something like; "doesn't count cause Mike was not himself". Come on this is a stupid remark. Most people can say they lost their title because they weren't 100% or they weren't ready. That is part of being a champion. What matters is how did Mike handle the loss and did he come back to win back the title after losing it and prove he is the best.
-

yeah I guess, but I think winning the biggest title in the world for a shortcoming is not too honorable... people didn't even "feel" douglas, they didn't see him as the champion, they knew what's up

Douglas won the real thing. He prepared (at least for his fight with Tyson); he was ready; he did what he needed to do. That's plenty of reason for pride.
Any "handicap" on Tyson was SELF-IMPOSED. It ain't Douglas' job to prepare TYSON on how to beat him. That's just plain silly.
Nobody put any asterisk behind Douglas' win, except you. Douglas prepared; Tyson didn't; Tyson got beat down and knocked out, end of story.
I'll go back to my Arizona Cardinals vs. Carolina Panthers example. All we heard from some sport "experts" was that the Cardinals didn't deserve to be in the 2008 NFC title game. That's preposterous!! They beat Carolina (the better team, on paper), in the Panthers' home field. And, they beat Carolina like they stole something.
Jake Delhomme was throwing balls RIGHT TO CARDINAL DEFENDERS. Are they NOT supposed to pick them off and try and take them to the house? Are they supposed to intentionally drop gift-wrapped interceptions to give Delhomme another chance, simply because he was "not at his best" that day? GET REAL!!!

I told in my response to noworries that I agree but I still feel that winning the best title in the world because the greatest fighter was sleeping is not very honorable, and that's how I see it

GIVE ME A BREAK!!
Do you really think boxers, in the midst of a CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH, care about the marital problems of their opponents or whether they were smoking crack or had too much to drink the other night?
Douglas was the champion. Whether some people didn't see him as such makes no difference. They're basically Tyson apologists, making tons of excuses as to why their guy got his blocked knocked off.
That's almost as comical as some of those whiners of the "Raider Nation", crying about their humiliation in Super Bowl 37, by the Tampa Bay Bucs.
"WAAAH!!! They had our coach!! WAAAH!! They knew all our plays!!! WAAAAH!!! One of our linemen went AWOL!!!"

So, you're going not only prepare yourself for competiton, you're going hit the training camp/gym of your opponents, make sure he's hitting the bags and the weights properly, walk him to his room to ensure he makes curfew to get his proper amount of ZZZZZZs, detail his nutrition to the "T", all so you can feel good about beating him "at his best".
::)

I am pretty sure the majority of champions are happy they won no matter what. It is up to their opponent to come in top shape and ready to battle. When a guy wins a golf tournament that Tiger Woods is playing in and finds out Tiger had a cold or bad knee do you think he goes home with the win saying he doesn't feel like he really won. A champion takes advantage of their opponents weakness. Buster was awesome that night. Everyone that has said anything about the fight said he looked the best he ever had. After that fight he was nothing. But, he can say he was once champion of the world and I think (and know) that is something not to many can say. Also, Tyson beat Berbick when Berbick had the flu and felt horrible and even threw-up just before the fight. That surely doesn't take away from mike beating the shit out of him.
-

My sentiments exactly!! When you compete against someone, in anything, do you pull out the stops to make absolutely sure that your opponent is primed and ready to beat your behind?

Ive been saying this a MILLION times.... Ever strong wrestker is ALOT stronger then pudja ...in the ring.

I think people are forgetting that Buster Douglas mom died right before the fight with tyson, so if anybody had bad preparation there you go ;)
-
Yes it does. ;D
Somebdy knows nuthing about fighting ;D
On the topic, Mike Tyson was beating guys who beat up Buster Douglas easily b4 they fought, but did that mean Tyson would easily beat Buster?? NO ;D
Think b4 u type ;)
-

Actually, I did forget about that, which makes Devilsmile's attempt to excuse Tyson's loss even FLIMSIER than they already are.
Had Tyson won, nobody would have been clamoring about "Oh, but Buster's momma died. So, Buster wasn't at his best".
-
tyson... nobody could win over tyson at his prime, NOOOOo body >:(
"mindspin" could, like he said about boxers Mayweather,Pacman even Tyson, "mindspin" would just grab them and choke them out. Its that easy when you re "mindspin!" ::)
-
Do y'all really think that ANY of these mma/ufc badasses would have any kinda chance against Roy Jones Jr. when he was in his prime? The ONLY chance that they would have is if they could get a hold of him, which they wouldn't, coz he would just stun them with a few quick left jabs, and then a right uppercut or right cross, and then it's lights out!
-

In the cage no boxer EVER would have any chance in hell against a world class wrestler =)
they can shoot from such a distance and so fast that the boxer wouldnt have time to do Shit and then his back would be on the ground.
people have No clue.

I don't get it? SO he should try to go into a catabolic state and then try to add some fat? ???

Dana White said something similar. He noted that UFC competitors, with extensive amateur wrestling backgrounds, tend to excel in MMA. That's why he's not as surprised (as other MMA purists are) that Brock Lesnar has skyrocketed to the top of the heap.
In his mind, the only reason Lesnar's is getting so much static from his critics is, of course, he earned his fame initially with WWE.
Lesnar is about 35 lbs lighter than he was in his pro wrestling prime. I wonder how a 300-lb Lesnar would fare in the cage.

In his mind, the only reason Lesnar's is getting so much static from his critics is, of course, he earned his fame initially with WWE.
Lesnar is about 35 lbs lighter than he was in his pro wrestling prime. I wonder how a 300-lb Lesnar would fare in the cage.
...And a boxer cant hit what he cannot reach.
And when he Can reach it its already too late. :)
He would obvviously do good because he was just as fast and agile in wwe , but would probably gas too fast =)
-
I don't get it? SO he should try to go into a catabolic state and then try to add some fat? ???
you dont get it b/c its BS...while yes it probaby did slightly contribute to his lack of stamina, it didnt make him gas that early...
it was more than likely his lack of training toward that end...ppl that have never wrestled or anything like that have no idea how draining an actual match can be for 5 mins...even practice and sparring doesnt really prepare you for it...
he obviously didnt train for endurance and it cost him big time....
if mindspin were correct you wouldnt see any fighters who carried a good amount of muscle but we all could list a dozen a piece from different fighting styles that carried a great amount of muscle but still had decent to great stamina...
-
So, you're going not only prepare yourself for competiton, you're going hit the training camp/gym of your opponents, make sure he's hitting the bags and the weights properly, walk him to his room to ensure he makes curfew to get his proper amount of ZZZZZZs, detail his nutrition to the "T", all so you can feel good about beating him "at his best".
::)
YES exactly, this is what I feel... yes.
and you said in your other post that even though mike tyson beat fighters that raped douglas, doesn't mean tyson could do that to douglas, this is true. But hold on, read along.
It's like overeem vs rogers, overeem made rogers look like a total amateur pussy, while fedor had to fight ALOT harder against rogers, does it mean overeem will kill fedor? NO ofcourse not!
BUT!!!!! When douglas beat mike tyson mike was a mess mentally and physicly wasn't prepared at all and douglas was just as good as in his other fights when he fought tyson and that's why it was even worse to win, because mike tyson looked like shit. Where's the honor in that.
Mike tysons manager that got mike out of the swamps and showed him what friendship means died, women playing with his head... everything else, and the physical prep... buster douglas had more problems than just mom dying also but still
but it's my oppinion tha u should only feel good when u win ur opponent at his/her best, that IS MY oppinion, i'm a fucking perfectionist narcist, vegeta supersayan honor! :P

There are top fighters with lots of muscle, like Lesnar, Le Banner, etc, etc... in UFC any top light weight would be anihilated by Lesnar... I don't understad why little shits here in getbig (suppsedly mma experts) don't get this... IN FIGHTERS AT THE SAME LEVEL, THE BIGGER AND STRONGER DOES HAVE AN ADVANTAGE.
-
Yes...being bigger does give you an advantage, to a point. If you're too big, like any IFBB pro, you will not have the cardio to last in an MMA bout. That's a fact.
As far as big MMA fighters, there are not any that I can think of, that are successful. Guys like Brock do not have overdeveloped muscles like a professional bodybuilder. In fact, compare the Brock of today, to the Brock of the WWE. He's a lot softer and a good 30lbs of muscle lighter.

it's DIFFEREND you looney toon.
They have trained to be fighters all their lives and their body structure allows them to carry alot more muscle than for example I could ever dream of even if they did 10h cardio a day.
they haven't trained with weights they have wrestled, fought and done fuck loads of cardio, and even then they are big, and it's because they have the big guy structure.
If you would try to make Jean Pierre bulk to 220lbs he would end up like pudzianowski I'm sure.
-
In the cage no boxer EVER would have any chance in hell against a world class wrestler =)
they can shoot from such a distance and so fast that the boxer wouldnt have time to do Shit and then his back would be on the ground.
people have No clue.
Really? How about boxers that have wrestling experience? Guys like Dempsey used to crosstrain, he even wrote a book on it. Mirko picked up tdd in a relatively short time, natural aptitude aside, it's not rocket science. I would bet a lot of money on Tyson caving Lesnars skull in as he comes in.

No debate here. Sylvia is 100% correct. I said the night of the fight he gassed because he carried too much muscle. Pudz is the strongest man around saggital but get him on the ground he has no leverage and in stand up his shoulders are too heavy.
-
I know MARK HENRY can't fight But i'd guarantee he'd man handle sylvia. And instead of pushing against a 260 - 270 pud he'd be pushing against a 400 lb monster
-
Nice to see Sylvia's arrogance returning after getting put to sleep by Mercer anyway.
Marius has achieved a lot more than him in a sporting sense.

I didn't say that; Kevcat did.

"But STILL" NOTHING!!! It's STILL up to both men to get themselves ready to fight, ESPECIALLY in a Championship match. Tyson' wasn't ready to play...too bad; he got dropped.

If I'm in a competition, I'm always proud, when I know I'm ready and did what I needed to do to win. I make no apologies, if my opponent failed to do the same.
-
Ive been saying this a MILLION times.... Eveyr strong 220+ wrestler is ALOT stronger then pudja ...in the ring.
What about 170 pound GSP?
-
Tim Siliva is a fat peice of shit!
-
-
That video of a fat Tim getting KTFO by an old Ray Mercer just goes to show how much more embarrasing this loss was for Pudz. Tim is not what once was. Not even close. Yet he still beat the strong muscle man...lol.

Hardly!! Both of them are professional, world-class fighters!! Who is surprised that either man would win an MMA match, against a novice (regardless of whether that novice in MMA is a world-class athlete in another sport)?
