What effect will this have on us? Will gas prices skyrocket? Will our waters be too polluted to drink or bathe in soon? Will this cause toxic rains on our lands? Give your thoughts!

The spill wont affect gas prices. That is a drop in the bucket in terms of global oil supply. It wont affect the water supply except maybe on the coast. It will kill a bunch of fish, a lot of birds and several mexicans but thats about it.

Ok. I'm concerned that a powerful company is smart enough to develop the technology to create this problem, yet too stupid to envision the possible outcomes of its application. What label would you apply to a child who ran around with a sharp stick and, after he fell on it, said he didn't see that coming?
-
I can't even watch the news about it anymore because I get pissed off.
BP brings in hundreds of workers to clean the beach that Obama visits, he leaves, they all leave.
where where the hundreds of workers over the last 5 weeks? ::)
fucking disgraceful.
I spent a lot of time when I was growing up on the Gulf Coast of Florida (family had a vacation home near Tampa) and I love the whole Gulf region.
fishing, crabbing, beaching, etc
if this thing goes on for months like they are saying it will now that the top kill operation has failed, the gulf is fucked. and heaven helps the coral reefs of the Florida Keys if it gets over there.
those reefs will take hundreds of years to bounce back.. :-\

It's always been a wet fantasy of mine to watch an underwater nuclear explosion IRL. Holy shit.

I love this post. Honestly, what the hell are they doing. They better get on their friggin horses. This is becoming an environmental castastrophe.

Hmm, I used to live and work in southern La. I now live near ATL, Ga.
Don't care? Think screw it , it's crawfish season, hmmmm, consider this reality based on the current facts.
1. The top kill efforts have failed and we will have at least 1 more week of oil pouring in at a rate of 12-19,000 barrells a day.
Right now this has suspeneded the local fishing of all kinds.
2. WITH the obvious move to better regulate drilling which is needed the oil giants move off to UNregulated nations like the Nigerian coast and drill there.
Sadly , BOTH major sources of job and revenue will be hurt greatly for a generation.
Yeah it is crawfish season ::)

wtf? Have you ever heard of the oil futures market? Do you even realize how this stuff works on the global econmic market...seriously?

That was bikini baker and polluted the water with radioactive compounds still active over 60 yrs later. Yeah real cool.
Why do you think they banned atmpspheric testing in the early 60's/
-
Very cool video...would suck to be on either boat...even if it wasn't fake.
The test was real and part of a now declassified nuke test called operation Crossroads. This was part of the film from shot baker to test the effect of a deep underater blast called shot Baker in 1946.
A 2nd test called Charlie was cancelled by Pres Truman, due the high level of radioctivity following this test.

I wonder how much dead fish surfaced after that one ;D

This will effect the environment for years when you kill off the food chain ie crawfish and other species that feed the fish and the fish themselves wtf this has a effect us environmentally and economically for years.

one more week of full blown leak, then once they get this channel thing setup to collect some of it, some will be collected, the rest will still leak.
from what I have read, this is now months away from being stopped completely.. :'(

How big is the actual hole and what kind of pressure are we talking about? Real fascinating that this is so frickin hard to stop.
-
the pressures of the oil coming out must be tremendous.
consider that the pressure of the oil coming out must be a lot greater than the force of the water pressure bearing down...and its 1 mile deep underwater..

That is terrible, I agree. Piece of shit bastards. It was a really cool big splash though, you have to admit.

Nasser El Sonbaty farts in the Middle East somewhere and north american gas prices go up everywhere..

Dr Benton Quest was voiced by the same actor who voiced Scuby Doo, Dino, Astro,... every canine
character in Hanna Barbera productions.

At sea level the atm pressure from the air in our atmopshere (1 atm) is 14.7 pounds per sq inch psi.
For every 33 ft of dept you add another 14.7 lbs of pressure per sq inch.
5000 / 33 = 151.5 x the pressure or 151.5 x 14.7 = 2227 lbs per sq inch , OVER a TON per sq INCH!

True enough.
The reality is that NOBODY is going to get much crawfish, shrimp or fish off the La/ Miss/ AL gulfcoast for a LOOOONG time
Pretty damn sad
Lots of oil workers will be paid off as well.

If he goes crawfishing or lives in the gulf region, he may be in DENIAL.
This spill will ruin that entire industry in the entire region for a generation.

my biggest concern is not the oil spill in and of itself.....its how vulnerable we are in the face of large scale calamities and natural disasters (katrina, 9-11, oil spills, earth quakes)
we have become arrogant and complacent; overconfident in the limits of modern technology
for example: if a month ago you asked me what would happen if a cap blew off an oil well deep in the sea.......i would have said that it would probably be pretty easy and common to fix, and that there is a group of super scientists in some institute somewhere whose job is to come up with solutions to problems exactly like this
......but as we see, no one knows what the FUCK to do
Now lets think of something bigger , like a large comet heading towards earth.........alot of people say things like the government probably has it figured out, like a super-secret laser somewhere that was purpose-built for JUST such an event........PROBABLY NOT THE CASE
we cannot even cap an oil well..........we would be FUCKED if something like that was headed towards earth
-
I actually believe the nasa scientists/army could probably hit an asteroid coming towards earth.
I have a lot more faith in that than them plugging this hole in timely fashion.
because its obvious that BP has no idea what the fuck they are doing.
if you do the research, you see that this company was rated one of the 10 worst companies for safety violations which lead in fact to the blow up.
many warning signs were ignored prior to this explosion just to make a buck.
and 11 people died and the Gulf of Mexico is fucked because of it..

i actually took a shit the other day that was so huge, that i am confident if it makes it to the gulf, it will devour all the oil!!!!
i had to wrap christmas lights around it, and stab flash light into it so boats wouldnt crash into it as it navigates its way to the gulf!!!

Gas price will not skyrocket, you dont drink seawater.
Environment in nearby areas will be damaged but nothing you will notice in your daily life.
It is a very big disaster, but planet earth is huge.
I am concerned about it. yes

its not only BP that is working on the problem.......obama and co. are losing political currency by the minute,,.....you think if there was anyone in the world that could have fixed it a week ago they wouldnt have done it by now??
some of those asteroids are as big a a small town.........some are as big as texas............we cannot cap a well in the sea.........how much confidence do you REALLY have that we could shoot an asteroid out of space???
