would it be better to do it with a fixed barbell instead of dumbbells?

The dumbells would be my choice, if you dont have them then use the barbell. Either way its resistance.

I do the step up version with DB in one hand.
My bodybuilding success in the last 15 yrs proves how well my methods work  :o
