Title: Anyone buying the iphone 4g?
Post by: Army of One on June 05, 2010, 05:46:23 PM
Should be coming out at some point in the next few days, screen has double the resolution, 5 megapixel digital camera, hd video camera, slimmer than the old one, battery thats larger, twice the ram, a quicker cpu and (hopefully) 64gb of memory.Steve jobs is going to announce it on monday and im sure theres other stuff it will do thats currently not known, since all we know at the moment is from leaked prototypes.

This looks like the phone Ive been after for all these years, held back after I got an 1st gen ipod touch and found it too slow and the battery life shit.Seen the droids in use Evo etc and the ui is still too slow and unpolished.Anyone else thinking of buying one?

Yes I'm still tripping on the run they're having with the iPad, they announced 2 million sold in the first 2 months and that was only domestically,,,I had a chance to load up one of the 64GB + 3G models on Friday for a friend,,,as much as I like it if you have a laptop and an iPhone an iPad is pretty much redundant to own, still can't hate on someone for wanting one just for toilet surfing if you have every other toy known to man,,,he payed $830+tax cash and rumor has it the Apple store won't even accept a credit card for it,,,he only went in there and ordered it 2 days before he bought it but they're still going for $1100+ on Craigslist here in Los Angeles,,,he said they told them in the store they'd sold 450 "cases" for the fucking thing just that day,,,Apple's doing numbers...

Owning the new iPhone in the first 4-5 months it's out will be automatic rock star status,,,

4G stands for 4th generation in this iphones name, actual 4g networking is pointless on most phones at the moment since the networks in usa and eu cant support it in most places.Release date for this phone in USA/EU could be anytime from this monday to the 21st of June.

Well the phone is way too feminine for me. Droid is the real deal, Their marketplace is open access which means you're not at the mercy of Apple.

Even at $800, the truth is there are lot of people out there who have nothing better to spend their money on than an iPad.  It’s way easier to tote around the house than a laptop and the display is excellent.  Just being able to surf is reason enough for me to buy it, but being able to use it as an ebook reader, load it up with music, photos, and dozens of apps is just icing on the cake.  And syncing so easily with all my existing data?  Priceless!

That open argument is the same argument people use for linux, look how well that did aginst windows...that open marketplace means apps dont have to pass any kind of quality test which is why the apps are so slow and unoptimised compared to iphone apps.

Starting June 7th new AT&T subscibers will no longer have the option for an unlimited data plan. Instead you will have a $15/month option for 200MB of data or $25 for 2GB of data. These two plans encompass 98% of all existing users; however, the small percentage of users who use more than the allotted 2GB will have to pay an additional $10 per GB. New iPad users are also affected and only have the option of $25 for 2GB of data.

Existing customers will be able to keep their unlimited plans and be "grandfathered" in. For many users that love their smartphones but don't use much data this is a huge cost savings and long awaited. AT&T has stated that the top 3% of data users consume 40% of network bandwidth so they are hoping this will curb usage and put less stress on the network.

On another note... AT&T has announced the introduction of tethering!! It will be available starting June 7th for an additional $20 per month.

 You might need this.

  Data Calculator.

 http://www.att.com/standalone/data-calculator/index.html

MacRumors is confirming reports that AT&T will allow customers who purchase iPad Wi-Fi + 3G tablets by Monday, June 7 will qualify for the existing unlimited data plan even if they don't receive their devices before the new capped plans are introduced. The New York Times story discussing deliberations within AT&T on the subject was updated to confirm the information on AT&T's Facebook page. (AT&T has a Facebook page?)

The ongoing shortage of 3G iPads had worried some consumers who were hoping to lock in the unlimited plans, which AT&T says will be "grandfathered" in for an unspecified duration. Shipping delays to US buyers are still long, and shipments outside the US have halted entirely. Apple's Online Store indicates that customers may sign up for unlimited service plans on iPads purchased online by June 6th. AT&T customers have until June 6th at 11:59 pm to order their iPads.

Reports that iPhone users who buy the tethering plan will not be able to tether their iPads were confirmed by an AT&T spokesperson, who said it was a software limitation with iPhone OS 3.2 rather than AT&T's policy.

Why would you need that if you have broadband and wireless routers for your house and likewise for your laptop?

Most of the old jailbreak functions in the 3.0 iphone os will be made redundant in 4.0, 4.0 will let you customise til your hearts conntent and have multitasking. It will get jailbroken within 24 hours of it being out anyway, just like the ipad was.

The only other network it can be used on in the US is T-Mobile and their service isn't spectacular either.

'4G' timing not quite right for Sprint's big-screen Evo
By Rob Pegoraro

Can you have too much of a smartphone?

Sprint's new HTC Evo 4G, its third device to run Google's Android operating system, raises that theoretically absurd question.

The Evo -- debuting June 4 for $299.99, before a $100 mail-in rebate, for new or renewing subscribers -- stands apart from other smartphones even when it's shut off. Its comparatively enormous display, 4.3 inches across, makes it a slab of a device, wider than any mobile phone I can remember using.

That sizable screen eases typing on its on-screen keyboard and reading Web pages, although without the trackball or touch-pad control found on most Android phones navigating and selecting text is more difficult. A thoughtful flip-out stand also lets you rest the phone on its side for tray-table movie viewing.

But in return, it looks as if it could double as a carrying case for more compact models, such as Verizon's HTC Droid Incredible.

The Evo also aims to up the ante with its mobile broadband connection. It's Sprint's first phone to support its under-construction "4G" service, which the Overland Park, Kan.-based company touts as offering download speeds averaging from 3 billion to 6 billion bits per second (Mbps), compared with 3G downloads that typically go no faster than 1.4 Mbps.

Although Sprint has yet to declare its 4G network open for business in the Washington area, signals have been available for months -- and on Tuesday, the partially Sprint-owned Clear service launched its own 4G Internet access on the same network. Tests with a phone lent by Sprint's PR department, using Ookla's free Speedtest.net application, did not confirm Sprint's claims. Even with the phone showing almost a full 4G signal, its download speeds hovered between 2.5 and 3 Mbps -- while in 3G mode, they ranged from 1.5 to almost 2 Mbps. Other reviewers have seen similar results.

Thing is, the Evo carries a $10 "Premium Data" surcharge, making its minimum monthly cost not the industry-standard $69.99 but $79.99. Sprint says that extra fee doesn't just cover 4G service but also reflects the odds of the Evo's features leading its users to spend more time online, then notes that its voice-and-data bundles include unlimited text and multimedia messaging. But not everybody texts like a teenager and needs such a level of service.

The Evo's 4G connection, which relies on a technology called WiMax, may be most useful outside of the phone -- the Evo includes a built-in WiFi hot spot mode you can use for an extra $29.99 a month. A Windows 7 laptop reported slightly faster downloads at the Speedtest.net site, up to 3.6 Mbps.

(Android users have long been able to use the PDANet program to borrow their phones' Internet connections, but the Evo's hot-spot mode is far simpler to set up.)

Using the 4G connection for Internet access can put a dent in the Evo's battery life, but for voice calling it didn't appear to make a difference: The loaner phone stayed on the line for 6 hours and 10 minutes in 3G mode, 5 hours and 57 minutes with 4G active.

After the big screen and the faster access, the Evo's other major contribution to smartphone design may seem like a joke: not one but two cameras. (Coming in 2011, phones with three cameras! It'll be like razor manufacturers competing to see how many blades they can add to their products.)

The 8-megapixel camera on the back shot surprisingly good photos outdoors but was predictably mediocre when it had to resort to its flash indoors. On its front, however, a second, 1.3-megapixel camera points toward the user.

But a lack of useful software leaves it without much of a mission: The best-known videoconferencing service, Skype, has somehow elected to ship Android software only for Verizon's phones. Instead, Sprint has tapped a less widely used service, Qik, to ship a version of its video-streaming software for the Evo.

Another Evo multimedia feature, a digital HDMI audio-video connection to high-definition televisions, seems even less well thought-out. The Evo's HDMI connection requires a "Micro-HDMI" cable that is, predictably, not included in the box. Sprint charges a quasi-extortionate $29.99 for it, but hardly any other retailers sell these things -- not Radio Shack, not Best Buy, not even the we-carry-every-cable-ever-made online store MonoPrice.com.

The Evo also arrives at an awkward time in the Android software's evolution: Although Google is now introducing a considerably updated version, Sprint's phone ships with the prior version. Buyers will have to wait for HTC and Sprint to test and ship an Evo-specific update.

In six months or a year, many of the Evo's early-adopter ailments could easily be addressed by Sprint and other companies. But in six months, the frantic evolution of the Android market could also wind up scrubbing some of the shine off this phone.

Sprint's "4G" = WiMax really isn't 4G. WiMsx is slower than HSPA+ which is TMobile's 3G network. HTH

Toys separate the men from the boys. The boys use the latest tech toys to get status among their peers.

Apple sucks. The iPhone is okay but it has too many limitations, even when "jailbroken". It's a great music player and I'm a fan of the front facing camera but it's Apple and they're going to jerk their customers around. Fuck Steve Jobs.

Go with an Android phone. I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and aside from the lack of support from Sony, it's a great phone. When HTC comes out with a GSM/HSPA counterpart for the EVO I'm definitely going to buy it. Sprint is having problems but it's Sprint, and it's expected of a new phone. At least it's been hacked or "rooted" so those bugs really don't concern me.

Stop supporting Apply, you guys. Let that fucking homo Jobs know that you won't be jerked around anymore!

Toys are important. Same thing with women. Just another toy to the ego. Cameras, mobile phones, TV, home theatre and cars count.

My guitar tuner is broken so I was looking at buying a new one. Well, the Android phone has an application called Cleartune. Cost $4US and saved me heaps. Works more accurately than any I have owed before. So toys count. I have heaps of new applications. Pinball, flashlight, level, Sudoku, Compass, etc., etc. Almost all are free.
The phones can now have custom backgrounds so I make my own. This way no one can have the same look. This is all one upmanship via toys.

I am DEFINITELY buying the new iPhone as soon as it comes out. Is there an official release date yet? When is the Steve Jobs conference scheduled?

There are plenty of free Tuner apps for the I-phone including one from Gibson that has a metronome. :)

Possible lawsuit could happen here...

the new i phone uses an operating system that apple calls " ios"....coined for the new i phone.(the previous ws just called os)

Cisco systems has been using the acronym IOS for the last 20 or so years...it stands for "internetworking operating system"

Looks sweet, but no real benefit over 3gs imo. facetime is iphone 4 to iphone 4 only, wifi only. 802.11n is awesome!!! But most hotspots don't run N.

I'm sold.  Will be buying one.

Truth is, I'm on a cycle: I pretty much buy a new cell phone every two years.  That was true before the iPhone so this will be nothing new in that respect.  8)

I'll believe that when i see it. Jobs iphone 4 wouldn't load at the keynote today.

Yes,it is a beautiful phone. Flat back again finally!!

3gs owners get the new OS for free.

I wonder how the A4 chip, which is both the processor and video processor, and new screen effect battery life? I saw how they throw in a massive battery, but still.

Do you just throw things out there?

Bogo's are often done when retailers can move a massive amount of product and still maintain a strong margin. Often times, bogo's are a function of luxury, not need.

Droid sales have been strong since it's debut. There has been very strong marketing support since it's launch.

Naw, I've gotta disagree. I was very apprehensive about the Android platform at first, perhaps even a little bias.. but it's excellent. Although it's a shame to see that it's become a little fragmented, it's a great think for handset developers. HTC took it and fucking ran away with that shit, Motorola is right up there, and if Sony stops being fucking pricks then their flagship device is going to kick some major ass too.

Android is a serious iPhone competitor. It's nothing to scoff at. It's good for Apple customers too, hopefully Jobs will pull his head out of his ass and start working cooperatively with Adobe. That would almost sell me on the iPhone 4g!!

You obviously don't leave your house much, do you?
