Title: Anyone own the iPAD?
Post by: El Diablo Blanco on June 09, 2010, 01:49:53 PM
I was thinking about getting a book reader, but this seems cool because I can also watch movies and play games, plus surf the web.

Why?  Did you try it or was it just lame?  I have a lot of travel planned in the next while and don't want to be lugging my laptop onto planes.  It would be nice having something smaller and lighter.

i got one, its cool on the shitter or in bed. I take it went i travel too. If you want an ebook reader, nook is the best. But kindle was a way better liberty of books. ibook liberty is just sad. IMO go with the kindle.

I got one and love it 3G 32GB one.  I use mine as a pure entertainment pad.  I got it mainly for games, internet, movies, work e-mail and just a time killer if i am on the road, plane, hotel room, random long ass boring meeting etc, and has been a complete joy to use.

I am required to always have a phone and laptop on me at all times, and i find that now my laptop never see's the light of day when i am traveling or away from my desk.

If you just want a fun new gadget to play around with and is a great time killer when you need, then this sure is it.

I used to use my Droid for games and other oddball stuff during down time, but now use only the IPAD.

I just got one 2 days ago it FUCKING ROCKS!!!! I absolutely love the thing, I have a crazy collection of digital books (over 10,000) in PDF, TXT, DOC and EPUB formats, I got a 32 gig Ipad and put like 3,000 books on there, not to mention a bunch of pics, movies, music and the apps for it are awesome, I can't stop playing with the thing. The night I got it I went to sleep at 6am cause I was playing with it all night, even my fiancee was like WTF.. it is seriously so much better then dragging around a heavy laptop, the battery life rocks as well

According to Gawker Media's ValleyWag blog, they are reporting a security breach on AT&T's website which has allowed public access to iPad 3G customer's email addresses and SIM card identifier numbers of over 114,000 iPad 3G users on the network.

Quote:
It doesn't stop there. According to the data we were given by the web security group that exploited vulnerabilities on the AT&T network, we believe 114,000 user accounts have been compromised, although it's possible that confidential information about every iPad 3G owner in the U.S. has been exposed. We contacted Apple for comment but have yet to hear back. We also reached out to AT&T for comment. A call to Rahm Emanuel's office at the White House has not been returned...... that includes thousands of A-listers in finance, politics and media, from New York Times Co. CEO Janet Robinson to Diane Sawyer of ABC News to film mogul Harvey Weinstein to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It even appears that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's information was compromised.....
The security hole has since been patched by AT&T, however the damage cannot be undone, and AT&T made no effort to notify it's customers of this breach. I for one would like to know if my information has been compromised, especially when I pay monthly for their service and trust their accountability.

While the blame isn't exactly clear, Gawker seems to think that both sides are to be held accountable for this unfortunate error. They actually have quite an in-depth article explaining how this happened and what exactly the process was. I highly suggest taking a read if you want to further understand how these leaks can happen.

The subscriber data was obtained by a group calling itself Goatse Security. Though the group is steeped in off-the-wall, 4chan-style internet culture—its name is a reference to a famous gross-out Web picture—it has previously highlighted real security vulnerabilities in the Firefox and Safari Web browsers, and attracted media attention for finding what it said were flaws in Amazon's community ratings system.

Iped knockoffs?  I was looking for ipad alternatives and there really are not any out and 1/2 the ones on the horizon are canceled.

That’s because they were all “me too” products trying to capitalize on the excitement generated by the iPad.  They were poorly conceived, poorly thought out, and poorly executed.  Many were cancelled or delayed when the companies began to realize that delivering a compelling hardware/software product that did one or two things well (nevermind all the things the iPad can do) without draining the battery is easier said than done.  :-[

Seriously though, I'm a hardcore pc/linux guy and the Ipad is probably the most incredible technological product I've ever bought, words can't even describe how incredibly intuitive and well thought out it is, I have to give a hand to Apple when it comes to product integration and ergonomics no one can touch them...

Can you have more than one web screen open and in view at a time?

As in, can I post on GB on half the screen while watching men in thongs youtube clips on the other??

Not at the same time on the screen (not big enough anyways), but you can have multiple browsers open, you just have to switch from them via one little button.

Seriously, this time we agree.  In fact, I'm already planning to get the next iPad version next year.  I'll enjoy this one for a year, then gift it to one of my nieces or nephews. 8)

I bought an ipad 3G 64gb for my dad last week, he asked me to pick one up for him, and then called me yesterday and asked me to pick up a second one.   The first one is sitting on my desk waiting for him to come into town and pick it up.

I'm not an apple fan at all personally, but it looks like a cool product.  Apple products get so hyped up though and have become so fashionable and trendy.

I'm a PC, and Windows 7 was my idea!

not an apple fan but I have been tempted to get one after playing around with one at best buy.  however...

I am really looking forward to seeing the Notion Ink 'Adam' come to market in the next couple months.... has all the ports you could want (usb, hdmi, micro SD, etc) and the pixel Qi display is just awesome... check out the demo vids on youtube to see what I mean.

The problem with this shit are the finger prints and screen smudges.  Watching that youtube video from Notion you can see how dirty the screen gets.  It gets to a point where even windex can't clean the greasy paw prints off.

the adam has a touch system on the back of the device to alleviate this issue.  probably takes a little getting used to, but a nice alternative to having to wipe the unit down all the time.

For the guys complaining about fingerprints, it's called a rag or towel...try it, does wonders.. :)

if it's extra smudgy use some windex! , btw. installed an incredible app yestarday by Autodesk (makers of AutoCAD)

it's basically photoshop for Ipad (yes it has layers) about 300 different brushes, fucking amazing app, best $10 I've spent on software! the depth of this program is crazy you can make drawings/sketches from scratch or edit your photos like in PS..

Meh, so I picked one up (on it now), gotta say so far not impressed.  This is my first apple product besides an older iPod for gym music.
Replying to peoples posts isn't terribly easy if you're quoting..... And you can't watch porn from websites....so those are two big negatives to overcome right there.
Also, apps are expensive, do people really dump hundreds more dollars on these things???

iPad will burn out you eyes after some hours of reading. The whole point of the readers is the special display, what really looks like a book page, and it doesn't vibrate. Very good for the eyes. When i first saw an reader i thought it is just a promotional machine, and it isn't functioning. Then i discovered, that it is actually turned on, and what i see isn't a piece of paper behind a glass, but a working display - but i couldn't tell the difference for the first sight.

...and $5 a pop is alot?  I have probably bought about 40 apps and easily provide more entertainment then what that $5 spent elsewhere can provide.

Maybe you need a better job if you are really concerned by a $5 app.

I'm headed over to the store tomorrow to buy a THIRD ipad (and once again its not for me) LOL

For a NON-Apple fan, I'm really racking them up, need to bolt up my apartment door and set up an alarm security system, its like gaurding gold! LOL  Can't wait til they get picked up!

I own a tablet laptop, a Lenovo X61t (not my primary laptop), the one with the foldable keyboard to use the tablet, can be used by finger touch or stylus.

But If I was to get a full on tablet with no keyboard, I would go with the Archos 9 running Windows 7:

I agree to an extent.  This is a pure entertainment pad that is a bit of a luxury/novelty then a practical device and no one shoudl get it to replace a laptop or PC, but it sure has made my downtime at where ever i am at, much more entertaining, then what my Droid was able to provide.

Where are you buying them?  In Houston you cant get one anywhere (any best buy or apple store in city )and have to order them from Apple direct.  Atleast this was the case when i tried to get a co-worker one last week.

Yeah if you want just an ebook reader, get a nook or kindle. Your can still read those books you buy on a iPad too.
