just curious as to how many here know how to actually drive ;D
....cause even a 5 yr old can drive an automatic transmission....
...bumper cars are esentially automatics ;D
i learned on an told toyota corona ...4 gears..next to the steering!
-
I love cars but can't drive a manual. Embarassing.
When i was learning to drive all our cars were autos. even now all 6 cars at home are autos. Though i think my dads next car will be a manual, so i might have a crack at it then.
-
i learned both, but i chose whatever car is the cheapest on the lot and a good drive.
-
Driven manual all my life. The only automatic gearbox that got me thinking was the DSG, has none of the laziness of the old auto gearboxes and has lightning fast gearchanges.
Still for a sports car a manual gearbox will always be more rewarding and enjoyable to drive.
-
I have had both prefer automatic's gotten lazy lately, traffic sucks with a manual shift.

its not hard...LEARN NOW so you wont have to unlearn bad automatic habits...
you'll have sooo much more control over what u do...
only negative...can get annoying in rush hr traffic...
if u have to do "first, neutral, first, neutral, first, neutral" for 2 hours....it can get on your nerves...
-
learned in a manual isuzu truck with no power steering, you learn real quick
-

i often just keep it in 2nd and crawl at an almost stall instead of changing gears :-[
back in the day...on my dads car...i had a bad habit of going from 1st to 3rd and then 5th :-\....laziness ...

lol i remember the car i learned ws no power steering....try turning and changing into a lower gear all at the same time...
needless to say....when i ws 13...i ran into quite a few poles :(
-
I drive both , I don't even think about it when I'm driving.

my car has no radio...no cd player...no nothing right now....
all i DO is think and mutter under my breath everytime i see a traffic jam ahead >:(

Yeah, but i am lazy and sticking it into D and crusing is more my style. Though im sure if i learnt manual i would like it. Though all the cars at home are autos, bar one soon, so i would learn but still be driving autos all the time...
-
a man who does not know how to drive a stick should be embarrassed of himself........i not some motorhead or anything, but there are a FEW things men should be able to do
i could never drive an automatic, im a very anxious person and driving a manual gives me something to do when im driving , like a game
plus.....manuals drive MUCH better........with an automatic, the car is essentially driving you.....telling you when to shift, ect.......with a stick.....you are actually driving the car
-
In Hungary cars with automatic transmission are still very rare. Everyone learns on manuals.

Maximizing your ammonium nitrate and nitromethane capacity, I presume. ;D
-
I drive a manual Ford Mondeo. I learnt in a manual Ford Fiesta.
Here you have to learn in a manual - This qualifies you to drive both. If you choose to learn in an automatic then you are restricted to only automatics.

I learned MT when I was 15, but all my cars have been AT (2) just luck of the draw, and my family keeps cars for a while.
MT is a bitch in DC traffic

nah...a month or so ago i posted that my car (a civic with 230k miles on it) died..it ws an automatic...
i had a bit of cash saved up...and i wanted to buy in cash...cheapest car i could find ws a nissan versa...i had 8 and dad gave me 3..thats 11 in cash on the road...AC...no power anything...manual...no radio either! :-\
when i pass my test...in around 4 or 5 months...i can go buy something nicer...till then...i'm fine with it...although..i DO intend to buy a radio soon...i'm sick sitting there in silence listening to my AC >:(
-
The only two reasons why one should buy a manual car:
1- If it's a sport car.
2- If it's cheaper, manual cars are always cheaper than autos.
No other reasons I can think of. Manual cars drive you crazy in heavy traffic.
-
MT is a bitch in DC traffic
totally agree...i've had this recent manual for just around a month now...give me 6 more months and i'll be posting about how much i hate it cause of traffic

also...if u drive like me = lazy...move to the highest gear as soon as possible...reason # 3
better on gas!
-
Does not drive me manual in traffic. I just crawl in first then slip into neutral when needs be. If you are lazy just leave it in first with clutch depressed and crawl that way so you dont have to change gear.
-
I'm pretty much convinced learning to drive manual first creates better drivers.
Manual right side drive is fun, too!!
-
i have both...sports car is manual
-
learned and up until 98 had manual...Wont own anything but a automatic...
If I can learn to ride a motorcycle, anyone can learn manual on a car
-

you r right....cause one actually has to focus on the road FULLY....
also...the chances of driving while texting, makeuping, shaving, reading, long conversations on phone are lessened

Does this remind you of being in Paki driving?. ;D

lol....nah...we did have cassette players at the time!
but come to think of it...at that young age...driving itself ws soo much fun that i never gave music much thought...
..considering i moved to the US at 15 and i'd already been driving for a few years

They have Polish people in Pakistan?
-
They have Polish people in Pakistan?
LMAO! ;D
electricity poles!
and actually yes they have a surprising amount of europeans that come thru trying to buy rugs..and marble goodies...and usually getting ripped off :-\ ...mostly russians though...some reason..even thought they r white...cause of their accents which identifies them as russians...the pakis leave then be and dont fuck with them...
-
I had to learn on a stick because my mom did not want me to turn out gay. :) True story.

Interesting doug I have never heard this before.
My mom was screaming at me!!! "Don't grind a fucking gear Doug or else you will never meet a woman". I will always remember that. ;D
-
Lol great story, did she also point out how to grab the knob?
-
Lol great story, did she also point out how to grab the knob?
NO. She always told me that women do not like lil' boys who drive Automatics! Men drive 6 speeds. 8)
-
Haha tell that to the mid life crisis men who drive automatic Corvettes (a manual ZR-1 is such an amazing car) and dudes with huge trucks and auto gearboxes.

I enjoy stick shifts more then Automatics. Sticks get me into trouble though. 8)

Outted :D
Manual here never owned an auto :-X
-
Have both. Learned in a Ford pick-up that was a manual on the steering column....2nd gear was easily missed.....glad I learned in it, as everything else is a piece of cake now.
-
Manual - we have little to no automatic cars in europe I know of.
It's like riding a bike, if you got it once you never forget

i remember selling my old beater BMW to a guy from my command when I was leaving Germany and having to teach him to drive it......we only stayed in a parking lot, as there was no way I was going to drive around town with him..... ;D
-
Yeah, my
1.6 ford Focus sportscar is an automatic.
-
Nice! ;D
-
Put you rims some on it and a loud muffler you are styling...
-
When traveling between Right- and left-hand traffic
countries I hate the MT.
Switching gears with the opposite hand
can be quite confusing.
While everything is on the wrong side in busy intersections.
First day to get used to the traffic I usually end up renting a small to mid size 250-600CC bike
at least Blinkers, steering and vipers 8)are not opposite.
I am lazy so I drive the AT mostly.
MT is more fun since you can control your
driving and the RPM much better.
For daily commuting-AT with a movie playing on the GPS, talking
on the phone, reading an E-book, drinking protein shakes
and micro sleeping ;).
-
I drive manual, not that many autos here
-
The quickest cars today are ones with DSGs or SMGs (Seq. Man. Gearbox), most if not 99% of Ferraris sold today are of DSG/SMG variety. The Ferrari Cali. and The 458 and 599 are almost exclusively DSG or SMG and will soon be only DSG. These gearboxes offer way quicker excelleration that a manual---meaning that shift faster than any human could...
Sure we like the control and the driver involvement, but soon manuals will disappear. And usually they are now found in more agrarian cars---even the cheap ones are now autos. Go to any rent a car place...
-
My truck is auto and my car is standard. I have no preference really. Try driving a stick through the mountains though. Good times.

They're killing all the fun, everything besides a 6 gear manual on a sports car is rubbish, not to mention how expensive those F1 gear-gear clutches are. Jeremy Clarkson praises a manual every time he drives one, and that's saying something coming from a guy that drove nearly everything.
-
I owned 2 trucks as a teenager that were manual tran. so I can drive one but presently I wouldn't own one. I'm too lazy to drive a manual now :-\ If I ever buy a corvette it will definitely be manual though.
-
Driving manual now (2000 civic) before this had a manual 93 civic...great cars...I even taught my ex how to drive a manual.
Funny thing is I drove a semi at 15, but never an actual manual car until 18. Totally different.
I'll never forget my lesson...I was in military..my cousin picked me up from the base and got in the passenger and was like "drive us home dog" we stayed about 35-40 minutes from base so that is pretty much how I teach people how to drive manual now. I sit in passenger...explain clutch to gas ratio, rpms, riding the clutch and brake, hills....etc then I just shut up and listen to them destroy my transmission and clutch. LOL
I can honestly say it's time to move on. I live in south florida and driving manual is a fk'n burden down here unless i'm wide open on 95(rare), 75, the turnpike or the sawgrass (which is cool until I have to get off) . I can afford an auto now, so it's all good.

Good story manual sucks in traffic but I like them otherwise.

My frist car was stick shift, drove it for a long time!
Driving automatic now!

Or PDKs...but I know GetBiggers already know that.
;D

Yeah, Porsche's PDK is nothing but a DSG, but with a long drawn out name that makes you think of Frankenstein. Basically it's German for Porsche Double Clutch---"Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe"
now try saying that. Porsche had a version of it for their 962 race cR back in the early 80s, but it broke down and the drivers didn't like it much.
The F1 race cars use SMGs, but they have straight cut gears, so a lot of whine type of noise.
-
I currently have an E49 M3 with a manual but test drove the new one with the dsg a couple of weeks ago and I think I am done with a manual after driving that car, esp given the traffic we have in NYC. I have to say, I also test drove the new VW GTI and I prefer the software program in that DSG over the BMWs, but I can see a time when these new gearboxes will probably make the manual obsolete. If you look at recent interviews by the heads of the major car manufacturers, they all seem to be moving or will be moving in that direction.

Odd name...but much better than Tiptronic.

manual rocks

Both my cars are manual.

I agree completely I got a chance to drive a 360 Modena a few years ago and it had the clutchless F1 paddle shifters by the wheel, it was fast as fuck but felt very awkward to drive I was used to popping the clutch in , going to 2nd, dumping the clutch, etc. I hate those paddle shifter 'chic' transmissions
-
Manual .. They help save the brakes.
They also get you corn. 8)

Did my driving lessons in automatic. Bought my first car (Honda Prelude...back in the day) in standard and never looked back. I don't think they even made the Supra, the CRX, the Mustang 5.0 Cobra, the Celica GT, the RX7 and the 300zx in automatic (some of the cars I've owned). Anything other than standard is not driving imo.
-
You peasants actually drive yourselves ???
....I'd have to ask my chauffeur.
-
99% of people in britain learn manual. I much prefer driving manual as well you have far more control over the car, esp in corners.
having said that it seems to be once a person hits 40 in this country they decide manual is a bit of pain in the backside and switch to automatics for the rest of their lives.
Remember letting my dad drive my car a few weeks back...huge mistake he hadnt driven a manual in so long i think he forgot what the hell he was doing and almost put the engine at 10 trillion revs. God the noise was awful!!
Needless to say he wont be driving my car again any time soon.
-
Manual,no radio, windshld wipers, trn sgnals, back or rear windows, rearview mirror,A/C,pwrsteering,or heat. 4 bald tires and trash piled up so high in passngr seat/flrbrd nobody can ride wth me. Most of time, howevr, it gets me from A to B even wth grinding brakes.
-
Auto for daily driver, stick for muscle car.
-
Corvette? ha try a Triumph TR5 1968 baby
Um, yeah Corvette ::). Not an old piece of junk, a new one. I already have a '74 Chevelle(w/454) that was my father's and I want a new muscle car.
