I was a DJ in the 80's and 90's
HI-NRG was a specific type of dance music that was British in origin and played in gay clubs worldwide, I know about it because I read the trade magazines, was exposed to the music through other DJs and just being in the biz in general. I had some in my collection because it was truly high energy music, strong beat...not very "funky", melancholy lyrically but very big, bright sound... and some of it crossed over. S.A.W. (Stock, Aiken and Waterman) and Gorgio Moroder were the mega-producers of the genre, You could tell an SAW record from two bars. Giorgio Moroder produced "electric dreams" which was a textbook Hi-Nrg song.
A lot of todays music has that sound to it, Lady Ga Ga sounds like she was dropped from that era in time into the present. she has a little bit more "garage" sound to her but that was big in the gay clubs too.
hows that for an "expert"... and thats from my brain, no Google Fu ;D
