Title: Yo, Computer nerds...
Post by: Purple Aki on June 25, 2010, 11:34:54 AM
I have a bit of a problem with my P.C. Every time I enter a search into google and try to click on one of the links I either get sent to some completely different site trying to sell something or redirected to the google home page. If i enter a search into this new google site and click on the link I get sent to the site I intended.

I was previously using Norton and they didn't pick anything up during the scan and have switched to avast and still no joy. Someone told me to run anti-melaware software (whatever that is) and still no joy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou please.

Sounds like you have some kind of spyware (aka: adware or malware) on your PC.  There are several free (and paid for programs) that may be able to fix the problem - although I don't think any of them work 100% of the time.  I've had good success with this one:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
and it is free, so it's worth at try.

No way, the good book prohibits that kind of behaviour. Does Leviticus 18:22 mean nothing to you, sinner?

You sound like you have a browser hijack exploit. Download Spybot - Search and Destroy and run it. http://www.safer-networking.org/ (http://www.safer-networking.org/)

What browser are you using?

Another uninformed PC user. :D
I remember asking this guy why he preferred Mac.  He replied, "It's more simple to use."
Funny, I've been using a PC for over a decade...no problems.
Unless you're using specific software for the platform, it's the same.  Don't be fooled by Apple's marketing schemes.  I bet they write 50% of all the PC virus's out there...haha
People get a virus and go, "I should get a mac."
I've have macs crash on my FAR more than PCs.  Windows 7 is solid, no complaints.

Well, run Spybot and let it scan your drive. Make sure it has the latest update.

With Firefox, I advise that you run it with Adblock Plus and, if you have the patience, NoScript. Depending on where you are at, you can look for a localized filter list for Adblock.

First things first! Get that hard drive scanned.

First turn on popup blocker. Run Combofix.org then keep your viruscan updated.

every pc ive ever owned, or any pc that anyone in my family or people i know have owned, have eventually been overwhelmed with spyware/popups/viruses. every last one. they can be cleaned up, but still it is an enormous pain in the ass.
i bought a little mac mini for 500 bucks, the whole thing is as big as a couple stacked coasters, its faster than anything else ive owned and ive had ZERO popups/spyware/viruses. thats all i know.

I use a program called Ad-Aware - I think it's made by a company called Lavasoft or something like that - it sounds like you've got adware bugs and since I got this program I've never had anything like what you've described since.

I also use Avast Antivrus too which is always running in the background.

If spy bot doesn't work try malwarebytes anti malware http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html (http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html)

download it, install it, do the updates and do a full system scan. Should do the trick.

your browser was hi jacked. Sometimes they are easy fix, sometimes are pain in the a$$. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1579 (http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1579)

I had a user corrupt their IE once, had the tech install firefox and called that sh*t a day..didn't even feel like wasting time with it.

Malwarebytes and superantispyware.  If the virus won't let you auto update google how to manually update those programs from another PC and run it that way.  If that seems to complicated, pull the HDD out and slave it to another PC and clean it that way.  Backup data first.

Starting in safe mode with networking would also do the trick....with WPAkill in the startup folder...

Mac's are better not by much but they are. And I'm the one bashing Iphone so i don't got much of a bias. Spywhere is easy to avoid just stay away from certain sites, and get some shitty form of antispyware that ain't spyware

Agree with DF4L. Run any serious problem solver software in safe mode (F8 on PC's at reboot/startup). Most people don't.

Confused about which spyware/anti-virus program than go to CNET.com (just one example of many sites). Lots of free excellent programs to download. General rule of thumb, at the first hint of  having a problem  restart the computer right away. If that doesn't work, than run in safe mode.

Check with your IP (internet provider), sometime than can help. On rare occasions, it may not be your computer or software at all.

Just to note: if you need a tech to install FireFox you may want to do youself a favor and learn a little bit more about computers.

Surprise, Mac's do fail and also get spyware/ virus problems. Most of the hackers focus more on PC's and Microsoft/Bill Gates. Who they hate with a passion. Mac's will be getting more future problems because of Steve Jobs arrogant attitudes of late. Hackers are also not liking him more every day. Rumor is that Apple will be going out of the computer hardware business in a few years anyway. Going to be phones and such in the near future.

Title: Re: Yo, Computer nerds...

Heard that rumor about 5-6 months ago. As you know, Apple has always been in the hardware business mainly, and Microsoft in the software business. That's why Apple is so limited with their own software programing. If they had coded their machines to run Microsoft or been more focused on software development they would rule the computer world. They want to go in another direction now with phones, gaming, etc.

I have my A+ certification and use an anti-spyware program, but I still get hit every now and then.  All the knowledge of number of SDIMM pins in the world doesn't help all that much.

My solution is just to take it in to a local computer shop.

Costs 40 or 60 to fix, and is way faster and less stressful than scanning for hours and finding 10 scripts hidden, none of which is the original problem.

Mate, in the future, you need things like NoScript and AdblockPlus running in Firefox in conjunction with AVG Antivirus and Spybot on your computer. It prevents 99.9 of the BS.

Since I can't see your comp in the flesh, I'd advise a backup of important data and reformat. Sorry...
