Man I remember this. Check out the old bench. I remember the first day Bertil came to World Gym. A fucking beast!
-
So, by my count, he starts with 505 for a single, goes to 435 for a double, then 365, 295 and finish up with 225. Not quite Coleman strength, but damn impressive.

yes, but when does he decide to kill a bitch?

Yeah what ever happened to him, is he still in jail? That dude was a beast.

I think he starts with 595. I think he has 315 on the final set. I can't see how 225 would be so hard even after those reps. It just moves like it is heavier than 225. Just saying but not sure. And don't forget Coleman is heavier and alot better drugs.

At the last drop set just when I thought he'd stop benching at a rep that bitch kept going! :o

On May 22, 1998, bodybuilder Bertil Fox was convicted of murdering his former fiancee and her mother on the tiny Caribbean isle of St. Kitts. He was originally sentenced to death by hanging, though on Sept 27, 2002 his sentence was changed to life in prison.

more ifbb politics here at its finest. Bertil is owning the shit out of Haney right there.

He killed his girl friend and her mom.
Don't know when he can out from jail?

Branch Warren type workout :D
-
Bertil's 5th place at Mr.Olympia 1983 almost raised riot :o
-
Branch Warren type workout :D
bertil was one of those 1/100000 type of guys who made bodybuilding look NOT gay....
I guess he has the same problem with his left hand as I do... :P... sucks to be right handed..
-
Very impressive. Almost as impressive is his actually putting the DB's back in the rack. And not screaming like a little girl every rep. Blue collar all the way.
-
Branch Warren type workout :D
except he actually does full reps and not that 3" rom bullshit. Bertil was a monster no doubt. those videos are intense to say the least.
-
awesome physique and some good strength on the bench
dont understand the praise for these workouts though.. maybe you guys are being sarcastic and i dont realise it.. his form is horrible! not just a little bit of cheating, every movement he did became a compound/full body exercise.. lol

Thats because he trains heavy as hell...its easy to maintain perfect, no momentum form with light weights.
regardless...it freaking worked !!! :o
Bertil and Roy Callender were my two favorite guys from back in those days.

hes not using that heavy of weight on the curls.. theres a difference between
a little cheating on the last few reps or on the heaviest set
and
throwing around the weights with no attention at all to using the correct muscle
anyways, not looking to get into that discussion right now.. cool video :)

Here is an observation. People criticize when someone cheats on lifts. I gotta tell you why would that be an issue at all. Everyone and I mean everyone who does this are guys who have no real size or strength. and the guys you criticize are the guys who are huge and strong and somewhat successful at lifting. so don't you think that if cheating was so bad that you (the person who does strict reps) would be huge and strong and making money from you body. Sure the way he does and every other successful powerlifter, bodybuilder or strength athlete has some cheating in it, but it sure seems to work. If cheating gets you 20"+ arms and a 500+ pound bench and envious looks from everyone who sees you then I would think you should consider mixing in a few cheat reps because your strict rep idea is not working.
-
another uncrowned mister olympia for sure.
-
its not about cheating, its about working the right muscle. kai greene cheats alot and uses momentum and "sway", but his form is always perfect otherwise. dorian yates is another awesome example.
there is a difference

No difference sorry. When you do a cheat curl you are working primarily your biceps. You may use some lower back and shoulders and whatever else but I will tell you the next day you will feel it in your biceps. You will NOT make gains in size or strength unless you push the limit and to do that form has to sacrifice. Show me one just one guy who has built size and strength by using a weights that don't push him enough to cheat.

when doing a cheat curl CORRECTLY then your working primarily biceps. but when your doing a standing clean with a palms out grip on an ez bar.. thats not biceps..

Yes...because Bertil isn't targeting his biceps enough ::)

Bertil was no tiny tit. He was 260 pounds in the offseason and sported 22" arms (according to him).

like i said, he looks amazing
thos ebi's were probably built more due to his back exercises than his bicep exercises... judging by those videos he probably had sloppy form on every exercise and used a shit-ton of bi's for all his back movements.

FYI thats how you build a brute, Herculean type physique. Bertil was a mans man and his training and physique showed that.

Whatever dude.....form is overrated IMO. heavy weights build muscles...just because you are using a little body english doesn't mean you aren't working the intended muscles.

i agree but thats not what bertil is doing. watch dorian train, watch kai train, hell even watch ronnie train. ronnie uses a ton of sway and momentum, but its obvisous the target muscle is still doing the burnt of the work. bertil is doing movements completely unrelated to the exercise hes supposed to be doig. like whats with the top portion of his incline dumbell curls? throwing in a little bit of lat-stretching ?? lol

Prolly contracting his bi's, that's an old school move right there taking your elbows up so high...it is pretty weird LOL.
but that looks like a tough set of inclines with fucking 90's to me....bis definitely getting hit

I wonder if Dorian and Bertil ever crossed paths, you know like knew each other personally and all that?

I always thought his training methods were the reason why his back was not as impressive as his front half. As you need a mind-muscle connection or he didn't think it was that important.

wrong again. I was taught the same way as I was taught to do standing barbell curls (with not super heacvyweight) to bring the bar up to the forehead so your triceps are parallel with the ground. It forces you to contract your biceps more. Just like what he is doing with the incline dumbbells. I used to have guys work in with me at the gym and I would show them this way and they would do one set and would tell me how much more of a burn they felt. I always listened to guys when the finished product like they had was so impressive like Bertil's. Again, Tbomz you are a good guy and young but how can you say he is wasting movement or not doing the curls right when his biceps look like that. Mine were a hard 21" at this time. Roy Callendar who told me this had great arms.
-

im always open for new suggestions, especially for those who have gotten great results from their efforts. my next workout is shoulders and arms. ill try the curls in that fashion.. :)
-
Whatever dude.....form is overrated IMO.
Training is overrated. Train as sloppy as you want, as you long as you cause hypertrophy, take your drugs, eat, sleep and have Bertil's genetics, you will end up with a brutal chest, awesome biceps and no back width.
Bertil could have used perfect form, he would have looked the same. Arnold could also have trained HIT....It is not a sport. Remember?
-

It always amazes me afresh what kind of crap you can train on tons of drugs and still grow.
-

FWIW, I have seen alot of bbers doing curls that way.
-
As I was looking at the dumbell presses, I began to think that maybe it is not important to have both dumbells synchronized at the same speed, but let it go at the speed of what the chest is pressing it as. As bertil's chest is a testament. And I haven't heard of him tearing a pec. One side may be stronger than the other, so let each sid go at it's own rate.

I couldn't agree more.
as long as you are training hard enough to grow, it doesn't matter what the fuck you are doing. Your genetics and drugs dictate what you will look like.

Yeah Bob is about as strong as he looks too lol

It seems crazy, but those overdone incline dumbell curls make your biceps feel like they are going to explode. I get an insane pump from doing them. You should follow suit and try em yourself. Like Bertil himself said, there are NO set rules for getting big.
-
I couldn't agree more.

I agree with you to a point, but take a guy that only trains on machines his whole life versus a guy who only does compound power movements and mark my words you will get 2 entirely different physiques. The latter being 1000X more impressive.

also i saw dorian train for my very own eyes and im sorry but he trained wild and cheated every set and how many olympias did he win

These days bodybuilders are so caught up with supplements, drugs, and tanning they forget that heavy power training and gritty hard work is what builds an impressive physique.
-
im always open for new suggestions, especially for those who have gotten great results from their efforts. my next workout is shoulders and arms. ill try the curls in that fashion.. :)
And that's exactly what you should be. Especially from seasoned veterans (not that I am one) who have shown results. I don't do them like this all the time but alot of it. You feel an incredible pump when you do it. In fact hold it for 1/2 second or so at the top. I am far from knowing as much as those guys or probably even you but I do know what worked for me and I see the results in others that have done it that way. I had a guy once in the gym come up to me while I was sitting on the end of the bench after just doing a set I think I had 405. I would do 6 to 8 reps. He comes up and says "hey if you put your hands a little wider you will probably do more". I asked him how much he benched and he said almost 3 plates (315). I said I did 585 and I could rep with 500. I said I think I am doing okay the way I am doing them. The moral is that I accept advice and criticisim from anyone and everyone. But, if you are going to give me advice at least be better than me or stronger. That is why I never give or talk about dieting or cardio. It is because #1 I don't much about it and #2 I suck at both. But, I learned how to lift from some of the best in history (at least who came to the gym and from traveling), so I at least learned a little. I may not look like it now but my brain still functions fine. Like I said you are a good kid and for 21 you are looking good especially since if I remember you were kind of overwieght as a kid. So you will be fine.
to many people read, and think way too much about this shit keith....they never realize that you are trying to train the muscle, not the movement...
bench
Exactly! Way to much thinking. If I had to think about this shit when I was lifting I wouldn't have got anywhere. I just grabbed the weight and lifted. And I might not have look anything close to a bodybuilder I do know I was as strong as any of them. When I was 247 joe Gold told me to enter powerlifting meets and bodybuilding meets at the same time. he said I had the potential to be champion in both at the same time. I will always consider that a compliment from a guy who I think knew his shit. Plus at that time I was 100% drug free and never knew shit about roids.

Indeed brother.....I have a guy at the gym i know pretty well that truly wants to be a Pro BB, nice looking physique...bout 185 at 5'9" but no density at all...and he works out like a bitch....always really good form...10-12 reps.....you NEVER see him killing himself.
And he always says.."man if i had your thickness.." and i reply...."well get under some real weight and stop training like a fucking fitness model"
He doesn't like that too much ;D

Coach I was there from 80 to 83 (maybe 79). Trained at 8am in the morning and I was living in Manhattan Beach. Went Mon thru Fri with weekends off. I was there when Bertil first got there. I remember it very well. I trained with a guy named ROn Depolito. He was well known for bringing the girls to parties. I hung around Ken Waller, Ron and Tony Pearson the most. Talked to Roy Callendar quite a bit and Paul Petite (not sure on the first name but the guy with one eye and huge arms). Did you know Bill Burney

Yes, knew Bill pretty well. He was being trained by Rory when we were training in OC about 1984 at Blocks Gym. I was training with Scott Livingstone during that time.

First you talk about how it doesn't matter how you train, genetics rule the day. Then you say if this guy trained the way you do he'd be like you.
I agree with the first part. Genetics (both how you respond to training and to supps) is far and away #1. How you train (HIT, volume, Doggcrap, etc) is a distant second. Very distant.
If you trained the way your friend does you'd probably still be big. Maybe a shade less so than now, but probably not too different. If Bertil trained like Paul Dillet he still would have been a beast and had Dorian trained like Arnold he would have won the Olympia six times as well. Maybe more because he wouldn't have torn himself up.

Here is a question. If Dillett trained like Bertil and Wheeler trained like Dorian, where do think their careers would have gone? Do you think their outcomes would have been different?

Nobody wants to train like a real man anymore. They think bodybuilding is all about the drugs, period. When people come up to me and ask talk about training, I notice the first question they ask is about drugs. No questions about training, diet, determination, nothing. Just drugs. They have absolutely ZERO interest in the actual training aspects of bodybuilding and are more interested in obtaining a supposed "magic pill" that gets you jacked over night. I always tell them to go read Arnold book and get back to me when their finished it lol.

So true, excellent post.

I always tell them to go read Arnold book and get back to me when their finished it lol.
Great post. This is soo true. They don't really understand or get the joys of Training. Hell years ago i started working out just to gain some muscles, but now 15 years later, i find myself going nuts, if i dont get a few heavy workouts a few times per week.
Now really only thing that keeps me sane these days with kids and normal job and all that mess.

Excellent. Bodybuilding can help you or hurt you, depending on your personality traits and behavior patterns. And as I know there are more fuck ups in bodybuilding than not, and its good to see someone whos doesnt let the bodybuilding lifestyle and scene control you. Its funny I try to stay away from the bodybuilding crowds in Toronto basically because I think 99% of them are drug addicted panzies who are too weak to stay off the drugs and train like a real man and do heavy freeweights. instead they ask me "If only I had your size bro!" So many phonies and fakes out there man. God damn wussies im telling ya lol.

If cheating gets you 20"+ arms and a 500+ pound bench and envious looks from everyone who sees you then I would think you should consider mixing in a few cheat reps because your strict rep idea is not working.
waaaay off base. its not cheating, or form. its drugs and genetics.
remove either from the equation and youve got a regular dude.
drugs DO build big bodies from relatively avg genetics. Great genetics dont build big bodies like loads of drugs do.
the fact is that bertil could do anything as long as he worked- and took drugs, and he wouldve been a big dude. his genetics assured that.
Nasser is a great example of what drugs can do for so so genetics.

This might be true with many in bodybuilding but I do not think that was the case with Bertil. He probably did respond great to the drugs he got, AS WELL, as have some awesome genetics in terms of muscle fullness, shape, body structure, etc.
I bet if Bertil had taken another path in life, he still would be one big sonofabitch

Bertil and Roy Callender were my two favorite guys from back in those days.
Roy had one of the more unattainable looking physiques of that era. Fox was another. You looked at them and said, "no way."
You'd have to believe that if Roy were in his prime, now, he could compete at the top level.

Roy was huge a nice guy too best I understand. I think back then as Arnold they did heavy weights and didnt rely on drugs as much. I see half movements and lighters weights nowdays. These mofos did full movements and were strong back in the day.

How and more importantly WHY do you post on here almost 40 times a day? You must be refreshing your browser every few seconds. 1 year and 18,000 posts later is beyond insane.. ::) ::) ::)

Roy was very nice and approachable. I have mentioned it many times on here before. Roy used to do dip with 2 150 lb. dumbbells hanging from his waist. He also did chin-ups the same way. He was unreal strong in those movements. Full reps too.
