Toronto has gone wild downtown.
Labour unions and poverty groups held effective peaceful rallies & marches, were even able to bring their families and small children to the protest, and got their messages out both yesterday & this morning, However the arrival of a few black clad balaclava wearing anarchists this afternoon changed the entire tone of the summit. Now the city is in lockdown. Transit service via Go Transit into Toronto, as well as the North-South subway & TTC system has been shut down.
A huge crowd of close to 25,000 started protesting peacefully at Queen's Park, when a small group of black clad anarchists decided to make trouble. Because of the massive police presence the anarchists were prevented from getting close to the huge security fence surrounding the summit venue, so they headed north along University Avenue and started raising hell. The anarchists broke out windows, and targeted not only large corporations, Starbucks, banks, etc., but started attacking various media outlets as well. Throwing rocks, and bricks at both CTV & CBC media trucks. As far as I can tell they've not directed their assaults against CITY news outlets. Rioters went up & down Yonge Street selectively targeting stores and businesses for vandalism and looting. A small mom & pop (mother / daughter) ice cream store was left alone, while "The Foot Locker" was smashed & looted.
Based on what I've seen so far... hat's off to the Toronto police dept. They had black clad balaclava wearing SOBs in their faces, trying to egg them into violence and a brutal response to the public, and they didn't bite. At one point a few cannisters of tear gas were released into the crowd, however, it was NOT done by the police. The police & security for this summit were well trained. The chaos did erupt rather suddenly. It erupted at a time when the police were escorting a bus full of elderly disabled protesters who wanted to participate in the protest
Riot police were able to push the crowd back but not without a few casualties. Rioters attacked 2 police cars with the officers in them. They hurled molotov cocktales setting the cars on fire and the officers had to abandon the vehicles... so the 2 casualties were infact the police cars themselves.
As of last account, there are currently black hawk military helicopters circling Queen's Park.
By contrast, the G8 summit held at the Deerhurst resort in Huntsville was a completely different atmosphere.
It was a rather festive occasion with crowds lining the streets in anticipation of a glimpse of President Obama. it was like they were waiting for their favourite rock star. At one point, politicians exited the G-8 summit to meet & greet and glad hand the crowd that had gathered outside their venue. Ontario Provincial Police were even letting people sit on their motorcycles to take pictures. There was one individual with a sign... it read.. "I HAVE A SIGN"
By all accounts, Prime Minister Stephen Harper was successful in accomplishing the 3 goals he had set for the summit which were:
1) A 5 Billion fiscal commitment to women's maternal, reproductive & health care in third world countries.
2) A condemnation of Iran's nuclear ambitions, as well as a condemnation of N. Korea.
3) Strong accountability for the commitments made at this summit by the G8 nations
Robert Fox, the director of OxFam was very disappointed with the $5 Billion commitment.
They were looking to see $10 billion a year, instead they got $1 billion for 5 years, despite the G8 already falling short of their commitments from GlenEagle.

Jag, I read an article that credits Canda's great fiscal position to a conservative govt you guys had that cut spending and reigned in reckless banks etc.
What's you opinion?

Harper is getting the credit, however, Canada's sound fiscal position is a result of former Liberal governments, specifically Prime Minister Jean Crétien who held a majority government for 11 years, and his former finance minister Paul Martin, who was finance minister for 10 of those 11 years, and later became PM for 3 years after Crétien. It was Crétien & Martin who massively reduced Canada's debt and put us on sound financial footing. Prime Minister Stephen Harper simply had the good sense to not mess with a good thing.
Back 97/98 when everyone in the states were going nuts with unregulated fiscal irresponsibility, we had a merger take place between The Toronto Dominion Bank & Canada Trust corporation. it was amazing at the time, because they were able to maintain such incredible secrecy. It was fait accomplis when they announced it after the fact. All the banks made a rush to merge, but Paul Martin the federal finance minister at the time, put the kibosh on further bank mergers, and refused to allow Canadian charter banks to follow the reckless examples of their US counterparts.
Harper just happened to be the guy sitting in Sussex Ave when the prudence & foresight of decades of liberal governance bore fruit.
Although in fairness to Harper, after a rocky start, he has done some things well, and my confidence in him is growing everyday.

G20 protest violence escalates in Toronto
Police cars torched, vandalism reported downtown

Police in riot gear and protesters clashed during a massive anti-G20 protest march through downtown Toronto that saw at least two police vehicles set ablaze, store and bank windows damaged, and much of the area put under security lockdowns.
The police cruisers were set on fire at the corner of King and Bay streets in the heart of the city's financial district. At one point, as one vehicle burned, protesters surrounded police officers who were trying to protect the car, CBC reporter Amber Hildebrandt reported on Twitter.
The size of the protest crowd has been estimated to be as high as 10,000.
Toronto Mayor David Miller said a small group of "thugs" are to blame for the violence.
“People are calling them protesters. That is not fair to the people who came to protest,” he said.
Toronto police Sgt. Tim Burrows said there have been minor injuries. He added he couldn't confirm how many people have been arrested.
The summit officially gets underway later Saturday with a working dinner hosted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
With the violence escalating, the entire area around the actual summit site at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre that is enclosed by concrete barricades and fences are under a security lockdown.
Transit halted
The area's boundaries include Wellington Street to the north, and Lakeshore and Bremner boulevards to the south, Windsor Street and Blue Jays Way to the west, and a section of Bay Street to the east.
Subway service in downtown Toronto has been suspended, with no service for the time being in the loop between Bloor and St. George stations, and no streetcars are running.

GO train service in and out of Union Station has also been stopped.
The airspace over downtown Toronto has also been closed, as has the Gardiner Expressway, one of the city's major traffic arteries.
Hospitals, hotels, businesses and the tourist attraction the Eaton Centre are also under lockdown.
Protesters smashed windows on both sides of Yonge Street at the normally busy shopping area in the Yonge-Dundas corridor. Witnesses said rioters smashed the info booth of the large Future Shop electronics store.
"It's a sizable crowd and getting bigger and bigger" in some areas, the CBC's Steven D'Souza reported. "It doesn't look too dangerous, but it is gathering momentum where I am right now."
'Why do they come here and make problems and make problems for every store?'—Myung Hwon Yang, store owner
Steven Connor, who works at the Hard Rock Café near the Eaton Centre, said several glass store fronts have been smashed, with some protesters using street pylons and road equipment, as some people were inside.
No one seemed to be injured, Connor said.
"There's been a lot of damage in the downtown core," the CBC's Michael Serapio reported.
Michael Hyatt, who was at a Yonge and Dundas gym, said the protesters seemed to target a number of U.S.-based chains.
“It is pretty horrible what they have done to a lot of the stores here. They’ve destroyed the windows at an American Apparel — they destroyed all the windows and pulled out the mannequins and [threw] feces into the store.
“It stinks and it is unbelievable. Foot Locker is destroyed. Pizza Pizza is destroyed. They’ve kind of gone up the street and picked at every U.S. vendor they could find. It’s really kind of sad.”
Bricks, rocks used
On many downtown streets, many store windows were either broken with bricks or rocks, or defaced with graffiti. One downtown bank on Queen Street West had its windows smashed, and a CBC van was damaged.
One convenience store owner said he was determined to stay open.
"It's important for countries to meet, but an island area is better. Why do they come here and make problems and make problems for every store?" Myung Hwon Yang told CBC News.
In one incident, a man dressed in red was arrested and then dragged screaming into a police van. As it happened, a large crowd gathered, denouncing police and chanting "Let him go."
The demonstration started just after 1 p.m. ET at the Ontario legislature. The protesters danced, clapped and chanted while carrying signs, flags and umbrellas. The mood, initially, was upbeat as they first moved from Queen's Park down one of the city's main thoroughfares, University Avenue.
“A couple of arrests” were made early in the protest march. They involved people with incendiary devices that might have been used as weapons, Wendy Drummond of the Integrated Security Force told CBC News.
As well, anarchists in a splinter group were spotted breaking away from the main group of marchers in a few locations, including Queen and John streets, where they attempted to move toward the summit site. They dress similar to members of the Black Block, a group that has used violence such as widespread vandalism in past G20 protests.
Group members are known for wearing black hoodies, masks, balaclavas and skateboard helmets.
"If they see anyone taking pictures, they put their hands up to cover the shot," CBC's Bill Gillespie reported from the scene.

Toronto vandals mar G20 summit
Injuries reported as anarchists smash windows, clash with police in downtown Toronto

Black-clad anarchists protesting the G20 summit in Toronto smashed storefronts and wrecked a police car on Saturday, while riot police donned gas masks in anticipation of an escalation of violence.
"This isn't our Toronto and my response is anger," Toronto Mayor David Miller told CP24 television. "Every Torontonian should be outraged by this."

Masked protesters smashed windows of a bank branch and other buildings, including a Starbucks coffee shop, and set a police car ablaze. Two media trucks were also damaged.
An Emergency Services spokeswoman said at least three people had been wounded in the protest, but that paramedics were unable to reach them due to the protest.
By mid afternoon, demonstrators numbered in the thousands, while hundreds of police massed and authorities shut down public transit and blocked streets leading into the downtown core of the city.
Most protesters remained peaceful, with many bearing signs and chanting slogans aimed both at the G20 and police tactics.
"Whose streets, our streets," roared the crowd, while TV images focused on "anarchists" who had promised to infiltrate the crowd and face off against police at the 10-foot (3-metre) high barrier that encircles the Group of 20 meeting site.
Soon after the demonstrators arrived near the G20 barriers, groups of black-clad protesters appeared to separate themselves from the larger group and confronted the hundreds of police shadowing the march.
TV reports said protesters at the front of the march were hurling objects such as golf balls at police.
Anti-G20 groups have been demonstrating in Toronto all week before the summit of rich and emerging economies, which follows a smaller meeting of Group of Eight industrial nations in the Ontario resort town of Huntsville.
Canada has budgeted more than C$1 billion ($970 million) for security for the two summits.

I know you hate Glen Beck Jag, but he has been talking about this for months.

Jag Question -
What exactly is an anarchist? The reason I am asking is that from what I have read many anarchists are actually communists. There is a name called syndicate-anarchists, and from what I have read, they are basically communists.
Do they want no govt?
-
The usual black block tactics..

I don't hate Glen Beck. I think he's a clown. I don't watch him, or even spend 2 minutes thinking about him.

Yep!!!

Very well said Alex, ...very well said.

I think that question is best directed towards an anarchist.

Cops were caught posing as provocateurs at the Pittsburgh Summit.
I wonder how many will be caught here in Toronto?

Canadian Union leader stops police provocateurs at Montebello Quebec protest of the SPP

The really interesting thing is that at one point in the afternoon, after the police abandoned the cars that had been set ablaze.... there was absolutely NO POLICE PRESENCE that people could see, ...yet things were incredibly peaceful. The majority of the police had moved south towards the G20 venue as the Prime Minister of Canada and leaders from the G8 came to join the leaders of the G20. Despite the lack of police presence, the atmosphere was safe ... almost festive, as the majority of people were those who simply came by to see what was going on for themselves. Many have reported the police cars were abandoned simply as bait in order to draw those prone towards violence AWAY from the peaceful protestors. If so... it may have worked.

Well so far, the police have not used the controversial LRADs they bought for the summit.
I wonder how they will justify those expenses? I'm sure they'll find some excuse to deploy them in the future tho.

Hey retard-- nobody except you cares about this horseshit. Canada is irrelevant. It must suck taking the initiative to post 9 consecutive times in your own thread and have nobody respond. That is, until I decided to chime in just to belittle you.
Hope this helps.

The thread isn't designed for response, but rather to inform.
With 72 views so far in so short a period of time, it would appear that more than a few people are interested. :)

Perhaps I entitled the thread incorrectly.
For the most part, it appears that most Torontonians, especially those who live within the security perimetre, or close to it, have chosen to leave the city this weekend. The majority of violence we are seeing is coming from out-of-towners who came specifically for the conference. It's just as David Miller said, ...these aren't Torontonians commiting the violence, but we will be the ones stuck with the bill. That sucks. :(
-
They're "travelling" anarchists, the same trend exists in Europe wherever there is a chance for protests.
-
And people wonder why the Police come down heavy handed. There have been many peaceful protests where wearing black was banned and anyone who tried black bloc tactics was told in no uncertain terms you are not welcome. Those 'anarchists' are nothing more than unemployed parasites. I'm all for a social conscience but the ideas and tactics used are counterproductive. They bring about a heavier police presence and a crack down on law abiding citizens who decide not to take a stand when they see these morons destroying shops and windows.
For all those who did nothing to stop the black bloc walking in their protests - You run with the foxes, you get hunted by the hounds.

I saw one guy with a hammer just bashing store front windows. Do these jerks realize that most owners of these stores are barely making a living at best?

Good time to be in glass repair! But seriously they are supposedly anti-corporation but were destroying things indiscriminately and even surrounded a security guard who had to back down when he came out to stop them smashing windows in the store he was protecting. They also smashed civilian cars and basically proved they are nothing more than idiots with no message or reasoning. They only smash things and call it political. It's like the Taliban ideology - we aren't sophisticated enough to engage in debate and show you why our ideas are good or valid, instead we destroy stuff and try to force you into it.

Dang, darn Canadians are as violent as the Greeks.

Hmmmm, none of these protestors look like conservatives or tea party types. Are you saying the left has been lying and its really the left that has violent dangerous people in it?

If you were speaking of Quebecois, ...I might have a tendency to agree with you.
There's nothing like a pissed off Quebecois to make you perk up in your seat, but the vast majority of Torontonians had left the city prior to the conference. The violence wasn't perpetrated by Torontonians. Most of the protestors were from out of town, ...and the vandals were those who came into Toronto.
I have an ex who works right in the heart of 52 division where the conference was held.
I'm sure he was in the mess of things. I think I'll give him a call in a few days after things settle down to see how he fared. It must have been a nightmare for all concerned.
-

Dufus, ...this is Canada. We don't have a Tea Party,
...unless you count tea-time in the parlours of the Sutton Place, King Edward or Fairmont Royal York hotels.
There were legitimate protestors of all stripes, left, right, & centre. there were political activist groups for all sorts of causes. There were also vandals who came for an adrenaline rush, and possibly something else. :-X
It's interesting the timing of the summits tho ...while the entire world is entraced by the World Cup.
Coincidence.... I think not!

Ok I saw his post on Facebook. Jay is a little removed from what's going on though. He is probably still making the same amount of money or even more than he did two - three years ago. He deserves his success he is busting his ass. But really he should not be frustrated with these protesters. The real people responsible for this mess are the greedy bastards in government, finance and industry. The protests are a byproduct of their incompetence. Expect to see more protests in the future and also in the USA. Jay will have to hurry up and become a cop because he will get his chance. Not sure if he will be able to stop them all though. Look at what happened to the world's strongest man when he fought Silvia. If one of the protesters happen to be a guy like Fedor I feel sorry for Jay.
